Hi, the town of ALOHA may have a Finnish name. There were some Finns who lived there early on. I am a Wahkiakum County, Washington resident, researcher and the Wahkiakum County Historical Society Museum curator (volunteer). My main emphasis is how families relate to our Wahkiakum County history. It is really tempting to do large portions of family genealogies but there just isn't time so I usually check when they arrived in Oregon or Washington and when they migrated to our county and whose reacords and when they left as well as their death location. The date that Cynthia York Gates drowned in the Columbia River in Cathlamet, Washington is a hard one, July 1874 because we had no newspapers in our area and may have to check microfilm for Portland or Astoria to verify her death. If she was buried in the Cathlamet Pioneer Cemetery she may have had a wooden marker and it may have been missing when it was finally surveyed. --Kari Kandoll

Marty Fenimore and I are 3rd cousins and we have traded information many times but we have not found any further information on our Gates family. It looks like we are at a dead end and we both get frustrated in our searches. Several years ago I talked to a great-granddaughter of Alonzo Gates( brother of Thomas) and she told me that her "daughter had read a newspaper article in an old Portland newspaper (1870's )that CYNTHIA YORK GATES had drowned in the Columbia River and that the GATES family was related to the Mayor of Portland,Oregon at that time" but I do not seem to find a connection there. She did not know of the connection either. Hmmmmmmmmm! Please feel free to email me amytime regarding my Gates family. Thank you! Dottie in CA

I can track this family in our county by land records starting in 1872 and Martin says that Cynthia York Gates drowned in the Columbia River along with a 12 year old boy when the steamboat left the Cathlamet, Washington dock. I have not found any death or cemetery records in our county for her yet. I would appreciate any information on this family for our museum genealogy section.
