The city paved the street around it. It sits smack in the middle of 12th street at the intersection with Court. If you don't know the history of it, you wonder why the weird rock is there. July 2011, ROAR Ministries with Aaron Auer, dressed as Rev. Jason Lee, held a Camp Revival at Pulpit Rock during Fort Dalles Days, in honor of the Methodist missionaries who became the anchor for white civilization here. The Dalles became the end of the overland Oregon Trail, and Fort Dalles became a central point during the Yakama Indian Wars. Pulpit Rock is the last physical remnant of the old Wascopam mission, est. 1838. The mission was abandoned in 1847 after the Whitman massacre, which is when long-brewing Indian hostilities finally erupted.
