Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files December 7, 2003 20 Years Ago, December 7, 1983 A judge has denied a request by an Antelope [Oregon] woman to enter the homes of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and some of his disciples in connection with a civil suit. The request had been made for attorneys for Rosemary McGreer, who is countersuing followers of the guru. Mike Beer of Rufus [Oregon] has placed first and fourth in the first three days of the team roping competition at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City [Oklahoma]. Beers and teammate Dee Pickett of Caldwell, Idaho, had a 6.1 time for first in the first go-round on Saturday. On Monday they had a 6.2 time, good for fourth place. 40 Years Ago, December 7, 1963 Destruction of the old Christian Church in Dufur [Oregon] by razing with tractors and burning was completed this week with the near-completion of the new church said Harry Atkins the pastor. Since October 5 the basement has been used for worship services and now the sanctuary also is ready for use. Dedication rites are planned at a later date after the first of the year, he said. Wahtonka [The Dalles] Wrestling Coach Mickey Hurley opens his 1963-64 wrestling season Tuesday on the road. The Eagles, now to mat circles, will follow the course most Oregon A-2 and B schools follow, a non-league season with the deciding matches not due until the last weekend of February. A girl scout troop led by Mrs. William Esson has added a new project to its list of achievements, and it has special Christmas significance. Mrs. Esson is in charge of the doll repair program for less fortunate children, as a part of the toy workshop that is done each Yule season. 60 Years Ago, December 7, 1943 By a transaction just completed Grover E. Keller has sold all of his stock of The Dalles Natural Gas Company to W.J. Swick and Mel Davidson, who now are owners of the local utility. Negotiations for the sale have been in progress for several weeks while details were being worked out. The consideration was not disclosed. Swick, one of the new owners, has been employed by the company as maintenance man, as well as operating his own butane gas service to farms and other individuals. Davidson operates a tire recapping service in The Dalles. Dipping his Dalles airport plane down over the alfalfa field on the G.C. Moore ranch on Three Mile creek, about 11:30 this morning, E.E. Capps, a student flier recently from Portland, struck a PP&L power wire which tore off a wing and sent the plane hurtling to the field. The plane nosed dived to earth, out of control, a complete wreck. Capps suffered a skull fracture and a wrist injury. 80 Years Ago, December 7, 1923 Former depositors in the French & Company bank will receive a dividend distribution totaling $75,333.12 between the dates of December 12 and 15 it was learned this morning from O.B. Robertson, deputy state bank examiner. Following a lecture by R.B. Wilcox, manager of the local Libby, McNeill & Libby plant, on the growing of fruit for canneries, members of the Oregon State Horticultural Society in annual session here adjourned for a tour of inspection of the cannery this morning. There will probably be an election of officers for 1924 this afternoon it was indicated. 100 Years Ago, December 7, 1903 After six months respite, during which time he had seemed to be gaining in health, Mr. Smith French suffered another attack from his heart Saturday afternoon about 3 oclock. Though not so severe as the first two attacks, it was more serious than the one he experienced in June and he has been confined to his bed since.
