    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle’s Files December 21, 2003 20 Years Ago, December 21, 1983 Several members of The Dalles Police Department received recognition for their efforts at the department’s “first annual” awards banquet Tuesday night and there were also awards made to several citizens who assisted police during the past year. The top department award went to Margaret McBride, the swing shift clerk for the department. That award is determined by a vote of all department employees and this is the first time since it was started in 1980 that it has gone to anyone outside the patrol division. Previous winners were Bill Turner in 1980, Ed Goodman in 1981 and Scott Wood in 1982. The court appointed defense attorney for one of 22 Indian fish law violation cases was removed from the case here Tuesday afternoon after telling the court he could not continue because to do so would abridge his client’s right. A new attorney, John Kelly of The Dalles, was appointed. The case was continued without date. Removed from the case was Portland attorney Jack Schwartz. 40 Years Ago, December 21, 1963 An order signed Friday in Salem [Oregon] by Public Utility Commissioner Jonel C. Hill allocates Pacific Power & Light Company a service area including a portion of both Wasco and Sherman counties. Included are the towns of Mosier, Dufur, Grass Valley, Moro and Wasco. Another allocation designates as PP&L service area portions of Morrow and Wheeler counties containing the town of Arlington, Condon, Fossil, Heppner, Lexington and Ione. The Dalles broke into the winner circle last night, convincingly. Unbeaten McMinnville [Oregon] was highly favored to rout the Indians, who were soundly defeated twice by Wy’east. But the Indians scored early, gained momentum and went on to win by a decided margin, 76-54. Bill Todd led the scoring with 20 points, followed by Rocky Brown with 15, Jay Kane with 14, Dick Charles with 12 and Ken Jacroux with 11. Kane rebounded 11 while Charles had eight. 60 Years Ago, December 21, 1943 National and state officers of the REA [Rural Electric Association] with many Wasco County members present were assembled today at the city hall in the quarterly meeting of the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative association. Present, in addition to other REA offices were V.P. Parker, state REA president from Blanchley, Oregon; John V. George, of Lewiston, Idaho, District 9 representative and A.D. Ellison, St. Louis, Missouri field representative on applications and loans. Ensign Richard Liftin, navy flier, now home from the Pacific fighting front on a short leave, will address the Lions club tomorrow afternoon it was announced today by Lloyd Arnold, club president. Mrs. Paul Lemke was hostess Sunday evening to the Lady Maccabees and their husbands for a Christmas party, her daughter-in-law Mrs. Fred Lemke entertaining for her at the Lemke home on East Eighth Street. Mrs. E.V. Herbert was an additional guest. 80 Years Ago, December 21, 1923 Miss Ruth Eshom is the winner of a diamond ring given by the Empress theater recently in a popularity contest, conducted by manager J.H. Stiles. Miss Eshom, who is employed at the soda fountain in Mack’s café, won in the contest with a majority of 10,000 votes. 100 Years Ago, December 21, 1903 A sadder company has not gathered in The Dalles for many a day than that which taxed the seating capacity of the Catholic church this morning and even filled the aisles as they listened to the words which Father Purcell spoke for the comfort of those who gathered to pay their last respects of one so universally beloved as was Mrs. J.S. Fish.
