Brothers Samuel COX and CorNEALius COX came to the Mitchell area of about 1898 from Tennessee via the railroad to Oregon. Samuel COX is listed in the 1900 Census of Wheeler County, OR, Bridge Creek Pct as being born April 1878, single, Tennessee, shepard. Samuel was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee to Elizabeth CHRISTIAN and Emanuel COX. Samuel married 07 Aug 1904 to Bessie SHERRY at the home of Allen GRANT and Mary Ellen HUGHES SHERRY GRANT at Antelope, Wasco County, Oregon. Bessie SHERRY was born on 03 March 1887 at Antelope, Wasco County, OR the third child of Mary Ellen HUGHES and Herbert SHERRY. In September of 1887 Herbert SHERRY was shot in a bar room brawl in Antelope by Jack Thompson. Jack Thompson had earlier killed Henry Harvey, the murderer of Roderick GRANT (brother of Allen GRANT). Samuel COX was a sheep herder and later a freight driver on the Shaniko-Antelope-Mitchell freight line. Bessie SHERRY was working as a waitress at the Antelope Hotel when she met Samuel COX. Herbert SHERRY is buried up on the hill in the OLD CEMETERY out of Antelope. There are twin daughters of Samuel and Bessie COX buried in the NEW Cemetery at Antelope. I visited these grave sites this past September. Does anyone have a picture that they could share of the Antelope Hotel? Does anyone have a history or stories they could share of the freight line between Shaniko, Antelope, and Mitchell, Oregon? Is there someone that I could contact about having a family reunion/work party at the two Antelope cemeteries?
