    3. Surnames: Tanner Leonard J. Tanner, 83, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care facility Saturday, September 13, 2003. He was born June 3, 1920, in Portland, and was raised at the St. Mary’s Home for Boys in Beaverton [Oregon]. He joined the Oregon National Guard and was called into active duty during World War II, serving in Papua, New Guinea. After the service, he moved to Wamic [Oregon] and worked for White River Ranch. In the late 1960’s he started work as a heavy equipment operator with Cody Logging, where he worked until his retirement. He enjoyed bowling, the outdoors and fishing. He is survived by his good friends, Wanda and Vince Aszman of Gresham [Oregon]. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. The Dalles Chronicle September 26, 2003.
