The only one to return a complete Petition so far is John Mabrey, currently a member of the [city] council. Others taking out petitions are Gary Honald, Bruce Harris, Jeanette Cantrell, Art Nims, Ray Trobee and former mayor Donnell Smith. Bill Ward is the only Candidate who has taken out a petition for the councilman-at-large post now Held by Hazel Phillips. His petition has been returned to city hall. Judson Baptist College has decided to put its future in a trimmed down Academic program and seek excellence. The board of directors this spring Approved the administrations recommendations to attempt only a program the School can finance through current revenue and to specialize, Dr. Roger Crabbs, President, reports. He said the school will open September 8 with perhaps a fourth to third less students than last year. He said the decision to drop Intercollegiate athletics cost the school 60 students. 40 Years Ago, August 1, 1964 What is planned as the first big community picnic to be held at the new park Adjacent to The Dalles Dam will take place on August 13, an event with a Catered dinner to mark the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Northern Wasco PUD and 15 years of service to customers. Committees were named and Other plans made at an organizational meeting, presided over by Alf Wernmark, Vice president of the PUD board and president of The Dalles Industrial Club. Also active in the event will be the Wasco County Pomona Grange, which helped To organize the PUD, Wernmark said. 60 Years Ago, August 1, 1944 The second steel barge constructed at the Columbia Marine shipyard here will Be launched next week, probably Thursday, it was announced today by Captian A. Leppalauto. This barge has been named the “Port of Umatilla”. The first B. Barge built here, “The Port of The Dalles” was launched some time ago. Charles H. Lowry, assistant fire chief, has resigned from the department to take A position with The Dalles Natural Gas company it was announced today by Charles Roth Jr., fire chief. Lowry is now on vacation from the fire department and his Resignation will become effective August 15. Melvin E. Johnson, avaiation radio man third class, has been awarded the gold and silver wings of a naval aircrewman following completion of the final phase of his training as a member of an air combat team at the U.S. naval air station Jacksonville, Florida, according to word received here today. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Johnson. 80 Years Ago, August 1, 1924 Mr. and Mrs. Richard French motored to Wasco [Oregon] yesterday evening to hear The Doris Marion Show company’s vaudeville troop which played there. Their son, George French, is a member of the company. The company presents principally Musical numbers. They will go east after presenting programs in Oregon and Idaho. 100 Years Ago, August 1, 1904 Tomorrow morning two of The Dalles most prominent young men will “board” their Cayuses and start over the mountains for California, where it is their intention To remain. They are Frank Parker and Warnick Waldron. For some months past Frank has been in poor health and hopes to be benefited by the change, while Warnick will join relatives at Marysville. We understand that Mrs. H.L. Jones has purchased the millinery store of Mrs. Temple on Second Street between Laughlin and Jefferson streets. The deed was Consummated Saturday and Mrs. Jones took possession this morning. When bids for erection of the Odd Fellows hall were opened Saturday night it was Determined that Charles Johnson’s bid of $18,500 was the lowest. The matter of Letting the contract will come up before the regular lodge meeting Wednesday night.
