Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files May 2, 2004 20 Years Ago, May 2, 1984 Cascade Locks has joined the list of sites undergoing an environmental assessment by state highway officials to locate a Port of Entry on I-84 east of Portland. Other locations under consideration for the $1 million truck inspection facility are Troutdale, The Dalles and Hood River. According to Ed Hardt, metro regional engineer, a complete evaluation of each of the four proposed sites will be ready to take to the public in June. Judson Baptist College will hold an Over the Top Victory Banquet on May 10 at the Red Lion Inn at Jantzen Beach in Portland. Guest speaker is author-evangelist Dr. Roy R. Craft of Aptos, California. Eugene A. Mielke, University of Arizona horticulturist, has been named superintendent of Oregon State Universitys Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research Station in Hood River [Oregon]. He succeeds Walter Mellenthin, who retired December 31, 1982, after more than 30 years on the job. Mellenthin has continued work on research projects since his retirement. 40 Years Ago, May 2, 1964 Biggest ever was the pronouncement of The Dalles Lions Club leaders as they viewed the throng at the Seufert Building and watched the ticket count soar toward the 1500 mark. In the arena alone, some 1000 persons managed to find seating to form a jam packed audience for the stage events that opened with the crowning of Pat Ryan, 17-year-old Wahtonka High School student and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Rayan, ranchers southwest of The Dalles as 1964 Northwest Cherry Sweetheart. 60 Years Ago, May 2, 1944 A small colt that swam the Columbia [river] here recently, was claimed yesterday by a small Indian boy from Dallesport [Washington], C.T. Smith revealed today. Smith said the boy told him that the colt had been tied with a 50-foot rope and broke loose when an airplane flew over low and scared the animal. At the annual meeting of the Wasco County Health Association held last evening at the county courtroom, the report of the nominating committee and officers elected unanimously for the coming year were: Harry A. Davis, president; W.C. Hanna of Dufur [Oregon], vice-president; Mrs. E.L. Juell, secretary; and Mrs. Roscoe Roberts, treasurer. Mrs. L.L. Hickok was named seal sale chairman for the coming year. 80 Years Ago, May 2, 1924 George Baldy Nosker and R. Bob Shaw were found guilty of the illegal passion of intoxicating liquor by a jury in the federal court at Portland, five minutes after it went into secret session, it was learned this morning. They will be sentenced Saturday morning by District Judge Bean. Thus apparently is the last chapter written in a liquor case that has been a topic of discussion in Wasco County for two months. Mark H. Crawford of Grand-dalles [Dallesport, Washington], was appointed as a guard on the ferry between this city and the north bank yesterday, to prevent the passing of people from Oregon into Washington who have not been properly examined iif recently from California. Dogs and hobos are positively forbidden to cross the river here. Animals such as horses and other livestock must have a clean bill of health before they will be allowed to cross the river. Crawfords appointment domes from the board of health of the Washington state department of agriculture. 100 Years Afo, May 2, 1904 The opening of Gumberts new ice cream parlor last night was really a brilliant affair and does credit to the proprietors enterprise. The arrangement of the furniture, draperies, palms, flowers and ivy made a pretty effort and caused many to remark that Gumbert is certainly up to date. The family of W.H. Sharp on Three Mile has been particularly unfortunate as regards sickness, another child, Phillip, who is 13 years of age, having been brought to the hospital yesterday suffering from typhoid fever. There has been much of this disease in the Three Mile neighborhood, where it is said to [sic] thirds of the pupils are detained from school by its ravages. Inquiring as to the condition of Max Vogt, who has been a patient at the hospital for some weeks past, we have learned that he has greatly improved and seems to be himself again. He takes daily walks over the hill near the hospital and seems to have no desire to assume the cares of business for the present.
