He has noticeably large hands which appear strong. Photo titled: JOSEPH B. RILEY DAYTON, Or., Jan. 11 – Joseph B. Riley, who was laid to rest in the cemetery here yesterday, was a prominent Oregon pioneer, being best known as a hotel keeper. Mr. Riley died January 8. He was born at Highgate, Vt., March 27, 1827. He came around the Horn to San Francisco from New York in 1849, in the second vessel which landed at the port. He was part owner of the vessel. For several years he was engaged in mining in California. He came to Oregon in the early ‘50’s, and assisted in building the barracks at the Dalles (Wasco County), Walla Walla and Sheridan, under the supervision of Captain Sheridan, afterwards General Sheridan. He resided in Oregon City several years. Mr. Riley was a prominent hotel man. For years he was proprietor of the Umatilla House, at The Dalles, and also the Commercial Hotel, at Salem. In 1860 he came to Dayton, and February 19, 1862, was married to Miss Senzella Jacobs. Two children were born to this union, both ! of whom are dead. In 1865 Mr. and Mrs. Riley opened the Dayton Hotel, which they continued to run to the time of Mr. Riley’s death. He had been one of the most prominent and active citizens of Dayton, holding positions of trust, and being highly esteemed by his fellow citizens. Mrs. Riley survives him. My great-grandparents George W. LONG and Emma R. MORROW LONG lived near the Dalles and had three sons in the area, and two grandsons were born in the Dalles. Third grandson, my dad, was born in Yamhill County near Dayton. I recently inherited this newspaper article from my Grandma Berniece E. LONG's photos and papers. The article leaves unclear if Joseph B. RILEY's two children lived to marry and have children. Hope this article reaches some RILEY family. I love the man's photo. [email protected] Donna M. LONG
