Hi ORWASCO List Subscribers: I will introduce myself -- Violet (MOORE) GUY of the Oregon Pioneer Family of the Dufur MOOREs, who migrated from Iowa in 1877 and homesteaded at Nansene (on Tygh Ridge), Wasco County, Oregon. Our Pioneer Grandmother (my g-grandmother) is Elvira (MENDENHALL) MOORE (1824-1899), widow of Rev. Hiram C. MOORE (1819-1869), and daughter of Himelius & Priscilla (COFFIN) MENDENHALL, NC>IN. The MENDHALLs came from England to Chester County, PA in 1682 under Land Grants of William Penn -- Quakers. The COFFINs came from England to Massachusetts in 1642 and are among the original families purchasing Nantucket Island, MA from the Indians -- also Quakers.. I started genealogy studies in early May 1998, joined by a Moore cousin, a Butler cousin and my son; and we have done extensive research on these families as well as the MOORE ancestors. The BUTLERs, with some also settling at Nansene, were very early Oregon Pioneers (1852, 1853, etc.); and while I am not a descendent, we are related. We do need more genealogical help on the ancestors of Hiram Moore, born 1819 in OH>IN>IA to William MOORE. My Grandfather, James W. Moore, with wife, Orrie Emily (GREENE) MOORE and infant son, Orrin W. MOORE (my father) migrated from Harrison County, Co., Iowa in 1877 via RR to California then up into "the Valley", OR by wagons, settling on the land, which is still within the family -- a grandson of James' daughter, Dora (MOORE) UNDERHILL. My grandmother, Orrie E. (Greene) Moore's ancestors are GALLUP-GREENE-DOW of New London & Windham Counties, Connecticut. Three more of Elvira (Mendenhall) Moore's son, who migrated with their families to Oregon were William Himelius, Harrison "Phillip" and Hiram "Embree". (I put the names known by between quotes.) I grew-up on Elvira's land and have been gone from Oregon since just after WWII. In Fall 1999, I joined the Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society, which is located tin The Dalles/Wasco Co. Library. I have lots of URLS, which I will share with you.
