    3. Looking Back: From The Files of The Chronicle June 20, 2004 20 Years Ago, June 20, 1984 The Dalles City Council Monday endorsed local efforts to seek better power prices for aluminum companies and voted to send the mayor and city manager as part of a citizen delegation to Washington, D.C. Dave Grassi, speaking for a new coalition of citizens, told the council that he felt it extremely important for the mayor and city manager to join a delegation being formed. The city would pay travel costs for its two representatives. Jill Brown of the Sherman County Rodeo Club will be the Number 1 seed in the poles when the 1984 State High School Rodeo gets underway this weekend in Redmond [Oregon]. Brown, despite not placing in Sherman County’s own rodeo this past weekend, still wrapped up the No. 1 spot. She is also seeded No. 5 in breakaway at state. Other seeds for Sherman County at state are Jackie Eakin, in barrels, where she is seeded seventh; and Stacy Lane, 10th in the goat tying. 40 Years Ago, June 20, 1964 Robert (Bob) Welty was re-elected chairman and Mrs. C.C. Wilson vice chairman of the Wasco County Democrat Central Committee at its organizational meeting Friday night at Cherry Park Grange Hall. Alvina Morris was elected treasurer, to replace Thelma Sheets, who had held the position for the past two years. Previously Mrs. Morris had served as the committee’s secretary for nine years. 60 Years Ago, June 20, 1944 Wasco County was short cherry pickers today, with the harvest now getting well underway and expected to reach its peak this weekend. This was the announcement by Frank Van Buren, manager of the local farm labor office. He also was unable to fill calls today for other types of farm labor. The situation is not yet critical, however, inasmuch as virtually all orchards have at least some pickers. The migratory labor camp is now filled to capacity. Walter Blazer was elected to the position of director on the District 12 school board by the unanimous vote of 335 to 0, the ballot count revealed last night. Rumors that a last minute candidate might seek the position, by means of a write-in vote, brought numerous persons to the polls late yesterday. The rumors proved to be without foundation. Blazer will succeed Glenn L. Corey, who is retiring from the board. 80 Years Ago, June 20, 1924 Ted Mandronas, bank robber and bail jumper, who escaped the law, temporarily at least, and violated the trust of his friends, unwittingly did a service to Wasco County by fading out of sight so his bond could be declared forfeited. The $3,000 seized by the county paid the entire net costs of the May term of the circuit court, and left enough over to offer a substantial reward for his capture. Chief Harry Learnerd of The Dalles volunteer fire department stated this morning that the new fire truck was shipped from the east June 10 by freight. Subscriptions now total around $1,500, including the $500 donated by the county court. 100 Years Ago, June 20, 1904 The G.A.R. [Grand Army of Republic] at its annual encampment at Hood River [Oregon], elected the following officers: B.F. Pike, of Wasco, commander; T.J. Cunning, of Hood River, senior vice commander; E. Swan, Portland, past junior vice commander; G.W. Rigby, Pendleton, chaplain.
