    1. [ORWASCO] Re: Cattle Brands // add horses!
    2. Violet Guy
    3. Hi Rooters: Violet here, -- from a wheat & cattle ranch on the breaks of the Deschuets River at Nansene (on Tygh Ridge), Wasco Co., OR, which is about 10 miles south & east of Dufur. Yes, my father had a registered brand of "OM" for Orrin Moore (b.1877; d 1945), which we used on our beef & milk cows; and since most of you aren't thinking of yesteryears, he also branded the draft horses, as they also ran our large acres of fenced in range land and summer-follow land, when not in use for pulling farm equipment. We had to watch for intruders that would cut fences to let the animals out - would this suggest "russeling"?. Would you believe it, well, we also lost cattle & horse to "Deer Hunters" in th fall! My sister & I were "cowgirls" that rode cowherd! We also had to watch our herd lest the coyotes lured of a newborn calf from its mother. If I sound a little.............! -- Well, ORWASCO-L as just had "A Day to Remember" with news items of joys as well as sorrows; and these were my old friends & neighbors. Timeline: until end WWII. 03/05/00 or-roots wrote: > Hi Carroll, > > I could be wrong and hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I > think the use of brands was/is for keeping track of beef cattle > (steers) on open range and transporting herds to market.
