Surnames: Maupin; Childers Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2ZB.2ACE/305 Message Board Post: Pioneer Passes Perry Maupin, one of the early settlers of Wasco county, died at 2 o’clock this morning at the hospital, general debility causing his demise. He was 72 years old. The remains were taken to Ashwood, Ore., where interment will be made. The deceased was born in Missouri and came to Oregon with this parents when a small boy. The father, Howard Maupin, who was well known to the old residents of this city, settled in the upper Trout Creek valley, which was then in Wasco county, but is now in Crook. During an Indian uprising in the sixties Howard Maupin, during one of the raids, shot Chief Paulina in a basin which is now known as Paulina basin. All of the other settlers had fled and after taking out his family the father, accompanied by his son, Perry, returned to protect his stock and it was during one of these skirmishes they had with the Indians that the elder man killed the chief, thereby ending the raid.
