    3. Surnames: Flinn, Rogers, Ritter, Kniesteadt, Kingsbury Inez Crystal Flinn, 88, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care facility On Monday, September 15, 2003. She was born September 15, 1915, in Jewell County, Kansas, the youngest of eight Children to William and Laura (Rogers) Ritter. She grew up and graduated from High school in Esbon, Kansas. She attended teacher’s college at Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kansas, then Taught in a one-room school in Kansas. She married Bill Kniesteadt on May 26, 1936, in Mankato, Kansas and they moved To The Dalles in 1947. She worked with her husband at the Liberty Club until They started Bill’s Coney Island Diner on the West End of town. She was a substitute teacher for schools in Wasco County for many years and was A police matron for five years in the late 1960’s. She later worked as a full Time reading teacher for Mosier [Oregon] schools. After her retirement she Worked part-time at the Wasco County-The Dalles Library until age 85. She was an auxiliary member of the American Legion, Eagles and Moose Lodge and was past President of the Emblem Club. She enjoyed her family, bingo and playing cards. Inez is survived by her son, Jake Kniesteadt and his wife, Pam, Gervais [Oregon]; her daughters, Martha Kniesteadt and her husband, Ernie Kingsbury, Bend [Oregon]; and Elaine Kniesteadt, Castle Rock, Colorado; six grandchildren Jenny, Katie, Lisa, Joe, Dana and Jeff; great grandchildren, Jacob and Gabriella and close friend, Arlene Wilkinson, The Dalles. A celebration of life with Moose rites will be held at The Dalles Moose Lodge At 1 p.m. Saturday, September 27. Private interment was held at The Dalles IOOF Cemetry with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. SON OF ARLINGTON RESIDENT MAKES HIS PRESENCE KNOWN IN BAHRAIN By Mea Williams NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY, Bahrain While Operation Iraqi Freedom is officially over, signs of destruction Remain as a result of the war. As the military rebuilds Iraq, Navy Sailors Stand guard, providing base security and assisting in the maintenance of Regional stability. Petty Officer 2nd Class Gary Harriger, stationed with Patrol Squadron Forty (VP40), helps to further the agenda of returning order To Iraq. The squadron flies long-range anti-submarine patrol aircraft (P-3 Orion). Harrier, Son of Larry Harriger of Arlington, Oregon works as an aircraft Structural mechanic and spoke of the obstacles that awaited him in the Middle East. "The biggest challenge my unit and I had to face was the heat." Harriger says being stationed in Bahrain makes him appreciate where I come From. "I realize how much of life is taken for granted." Although Harriger Misses the climate and freedom back home, he really enjoyed working with such A small unit. Like many of his fellow sailors, he often thinks about home and the first things He wants to do when he returns. "I'm going to take the SAT's and get started With college," said the 1999 Oakridge High School graduate. While standing duty in Bahrain, Petty Officer 2nd Class Gary Harriger and his Unit continue to help establish peace in Iraq and rebuild a country liberated By the war. Surnames: Larison, Armstrong, Prophet, Smith, Steinberg, Gorrell, Kidd Clarence B. “C.B.” Larison, 74, a resident of Goldendale [Washington], died Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at the Klickitat Valley Hospital [Washington] Following an extended illness. He was born March 4, 1929 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Clarence and Laura Myrtle (Armstrong) Larison and grew up there. Following his graduation from Woodward High School, he attended Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Education. He married Arlene Prophet in Buffalo, Oklahoma on November 27, 1949. He later received his master’s degree at San Jose State and taught elementary School in California before becoming an administrator. He worked as a school administrator in the Bolinas-Stinson and Alturas districts Retiring in 1993. Following his retirement, he became interested in RV [recreational vehicle] Travel and with his wife began touring around the U.S. looking for a community To settle in for retirement. They discovered Goldendale and moved there in 1994, Where he became a volunteer at local elementary schools, reading stories to the Children, and was active in the Help One Student (H.O.S.T.) program. He enjoyed Music, and was a participant in the Old-Time Fiddlers Association and the Senior Serenaders in The Dalles, as well as lending his strong tenor voice to The Methodist Church choir. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly boating and Fishing, as well as hunting and camping. He had been a member of Toastmasters International and loved public speaking, and had been a member of the Lions Club The National Education Association, and Mensa. He is survived by his wife Arlene of the family home in Goldendale, and by his Two daughters, Brenda Larison and her husband Tom Smith, Topanga, California; and Sydney Larison and her husband Robert Steinberg, Rochester, Washington. He was preceded in death by a son, David, in 1985, and by two sisters, Donna Gorrell and Anna Mae Kidd. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, September 26 at the Goldendale Methodist Church with Pastor Pat Beeman presiding. He was born October 17, 1929, in Kent [Oregon] to Theodore and Mildred von Borstel. He grew up in Sherman County where he spent his career as a wheat And cattle rancher on the farm, which has been in his family since 1886. He lived in Corvallis for the last four years on Stahlbush Island next to his Daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Bill Chambers. He was very involved with the L.L. Livestock 4-H Club helping children with Their sheep and beef projects. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s Sporting events, gardening and traveling. Survivors include his six children, Karen von Borstel, Vancouver, Washington; Sister Krista von Borstel, Beaverton [Oregon]; Larry von Borstel, Grass Valley [Oregon]; Karla Chambers, Corvallis; Lee von Borstel, Grass Valley; and Kay Cunning, Vancouver, 12 grandchildren and a friend and companion, Mary Fields, Corvallis. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 24, at 9 a.m. at Shepherd Of the Valley Lutheran Church in Corvallis. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. at the Grass Valley Cemetery, with a community dinner afterward at South Sherman Elementary School in Grass Valley. He was born April 2, 1923 in Clarinda, Iowa to Guy and Clara Ellen (McNanama) Spangler and grew up there. Following graduation from high school he joined the Merchant Marine and was Attached to the U.S. Coast Guard in the South Pacific during WWII. After the War he married Ada G. Henderson in Goldendale [Washington] in 1946 and they Made their home in The Dalles until his death. He managed the Hotel Dalles Coffee Shop for 16 years before opening his own Restaurant, the Humdinger Drive-In on West Second Street near Terminal Avenue. After operating the Humdinger for eight years, he became the manager and Operator of the Lone Pine Restaurant for 15 years, retiring in 1987. An avid golfer, he was a member of The Dalles Country Club and spent many hours Perfecting his game. He had also been a life member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #303 and a longtime member of the First Christian Church. He enjoyed his family, and particularly liked watching his grandsons play baseball. Survivors include his wife Ada of the family home; daughters Jan and her Husband Daryl Maloch, Forest Grove [Oregon]; Jo Bradley, Gresham [Oregon]; and Four grandchildren, Tyler and Gabe Bradley and Carly and Caitlin Maloch. He Was preceded in death by one brother, Joe. At his request no public services will be held; the family will observe private Ceremonies of remembrance. He had been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) several months ago. He was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa on December 29, 1928. He and his wife, Joan, were married on August 13, 1956. He taught school in Iowa for seven years. They moved to Oregon in 1962 where he worked for Gates Rubber Company for 23 years and then retired to Sportsman’s Park [Maupin] in 1985. He was an Army veteran and was also service officer for both the VFW and the American Legion for many years. He was an avid hunter, hiker and fisherman. Survivors include four children, Carol Nash, Gresham [Oregon]; Karen Veith, Portland; Jeff Davis, New York; and Laurie Davis, Portland; and six grand- Children. He was born January 31, 1923 at Twin Falls, Idaho, to Otis and Cora Lawson Kelty. He grew up and attended school in Milton Freewater [Oregon]. After graduation he Entered the Army during World War II. Following military service he went to work as a lineman for electric utility Companies. While working in Condon [Oregon] he met his wife to be, Ida D. Keeney. The couple were married on July 11, 1949 at Walla Walla, Washington. His occupation took him to locations throughout the northwest and Alaska where The Keltys lived for many years. They also lived at Heppner [Oregon] and The Dalles before retiring in Irrigon And had recently moved to La Grande [Oregon]. He was an involved member of the Electricians Union. His favorite hobby was snowmobiling, which he became very involved in. Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Kelty, in Idaho; and grandson, Billy Kelty, Hermiston [Oregon]. At his request no service will be held. Disposition was by cremation. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Oregon Division, 0330 SW Curry, Portland, Oregon 97201. He was born August 5, 1933 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Raymond Everett and Lena Georgina (Williams) Patterson and moved with his family in 1943 to Buena In the Yakima Valley [Washington]. He married Ruth Green on July 27, 1951 and They lived in Klickitat County from 1956 until his death. He worked at the Lumber mill in Klickitat [Washington] for 36 years and retired as a lumber Grader. He is survived by his wife Ruth, and by his children and their families; Daughter Sherry Winship and her husband Barry; sons David Fred Patterson And Josiah Laird Patterson and his wife Melinda; sisters Helen Tennison, Patricia and her husband Milton Holloway, and Ila and her husband Vern Riddle; brother Ralph Patterson. Also surviving are grandchildren Andrew Winship, Rebecca Presley, Chariti, Melinda, Jennie, Corisa and Livia Patterson and great-grandchildren Steven, Franklin, Brianna and Emilee Patterson and numerous nieces and nephews. Surnames: Childers Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2ZB.2ACE/306 Message Board Post: Dora Childers Dies; Served UP For Years Dora Edna Childers, 84, a resident here for the last 55 years and a former Union Pacific Railroad telegrapher and clerk died Sunday at a local hospital. Mrs. Childers was born Feb. 21, 1887 at North Powder, Ore., and was graduated from Baker High School. She became a chief telegraph dispatcher for UPRR, her first headquarters being the old Portland Hotel. She began work in The Dalles in 1916 and served as chief clerk at the passenger depot, retiring three years ago. She was married in 1932 to Paul W. Childers, who died in 1943. Mrs. Childers was a member of the UP Old Timers Club, the Emory T. Mulquin Chapter, Morse Telegraphic Club, Inc., and the National Travel Club. She was widely traveled, having made trips to many parts of the world. Surviving are six nieces, including Arlene Free of Hood River, and two nephews. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Smith Callaway Chapel. He was born December 4, 1916, in Moro [Oregon], the oldest of three children To Roy Paul and Mary Jane (Taylor) Hulse. He was raised on the farm on Tygh Ridge and graduated from Dufur [Oregon] High School with the class of 1935. Paul served in the U.S. Army during WWII and returned to Dufur after the war. He married Coramae Hoffer on March 31, 1946 in The Dalles and together farmed On Tygh Ridge and the Dufur Valley. He was a member of Dufur Christian Church and had served as chairman of the Board, Masonic Lodge, Oregon Wheat Growers League, Cattleman’s Association, Dufur Recreation Board and R.E.A. He had been active with Wasco County Fair And was the 1st to have a camping trailer at the Wasco County Fair. He enjoyed Being with his family and grandchildren, loved The Trail Band, reading, the Outdoors, hunting and the ocean. Paul is survived by his wife Coramae; his son, Michael P. Hulse; his daughter, Carmagene and her husband, Don Uhalde, all of Dufur; grandchildren, Taylor Hulse and Chelsie Hulse, both of Dufur; Jordan Uhalde, Bend [Oregon]; Joshua And his wife, Vanessa Uhalde, Dufur; Russ and his wife, Michele Harrington, Benton City, Washington; Rick and his wife, Bobbi Harrington, The Dalles; Latitia Dousay, The Dalles; 8 great-grandchildren and one brother, William L. And his wife, Roseanne Hulse, Dufur. He was preceded in death by his father, Mother and sister, Janet Mary Chamberlain. Born in Oakland, Oregon on August 9, 1936 and raised in Troutlake, Washington, She grew up surrounded by the love of her father and mother, Lawrence and Bettina McCuistion and the support of this small mountain community. Encouraged By her musically artistic mother, she became an accomplished pianist and Vocalist. She was active in many choirs and vocal groups, was a wonderful cook And earned the distinction of Master Gardner. Syd focused on the good in others and maintained a positive outlook on life, Even though battling MS for more than a decade. She loved and was deeply loved By her family and many friends, whom she encouraged to enjoy life as she had Done so much herself. The last year of her life as she dealt with terminal cancer, family and friends Especially her devoted husband, Marvin, rallied together to care for her and Visit often. We made the most of the circumstances and in the process, created Many cherished memories. Sydney is survived by her husband of 35 years, Marvin; daughter, Elizabeth Wilson and her husband Dave of Indianola, Washington; son, Glenn Hollenbeck Of Portland; son, Brian Hollenbeck and his wife Glenda of Portland; mother, Bettina McCuistion of Troutlake; 8 grandchildren, Sara, Morgan, Ron, Syd, Mele, Brice, Tim and Jenna; 4 great-grandchildren; Erik, Grace, Maya, Kiara and Dear friend, Sonna Durdel. WASCO COUNTY INMATE DIES IN PRISON John Craven was convicted for ’91 murder, rape By the Associated Press SALEM – Prison officials say an inmate from Wasco County found dead at the Oregon State Penitentiary hanged himself with a bed sheet. Penitentiary spokesman Michael Yoder said John Patrick Craven, 33, was found Friday night during a routine cell check. They cut him down and tried to revive Him but could not, Yoder said. He had arrived at the prison in 1991 and was serving a life sentence for Aggravated murder and rape. He was convicted for the murder of Mary C. Walch, Who was found dead in her apartment on Liberty Street on November 8, 1991. She Died of a stab wound. She was 46. He was born October 1, 1914 in Hood River, the eldest of three children to George A. and Evelyn (Bell) Sheppard and grew up attending local schools and Working on the family fruit ranch. Following his graduation from Odell [Oregon] High School in 1933 he attended Oregon State College and majored in business administration prior to Enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served his country for 3 œ years in the South Pacific during World War II and successfully completed Officer Candidate School. He married Mariam McCoy in Odell in May of 1945. Following his discharge >From the military he returned home to operate a fruit ranch on Dethman Ridge With his brother Bob. Active in his community, he served on a number of local boards and commissions And was involved for a number of years with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the American Legion, a 50-year member of the Hood River Elks, And was member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, Kemp Lodge #181 in Odell. He served as Grand Master of the Lodge for the State of Oregon in 1979-80. As active outdoorsman, he enjoyed all sports, particularly camping, fishing and Mountain climbing. He was a member of the Crag Rats alpineering club, serving As the Big Squeak (president) in 1947. Along with his mountaineering he was Active on many search and rescue operations. Survivors include his wife Mariam, Hood River, and his sons and their families; Douglas and Edie Sheppard, Santa Maria, California; and Gregory V. Sheppard, Hood River; three grandchildren, Phillip Sheppard, Portland; Corey Sheppard, Parkdale [Oregon]; and Kevin Sheppard, Lemoore, California and seven great- Grandchildren. In accordance with his wishes there will be no public services; the family Will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the Placement of his ashes at the Idlewild Cemetery mausoleum. He lived in Portland for more than 30 years.
