    3. Looking Back: From The Files of The Chronicle June 20, 2004 20 Years Ago, June 20, 1984 The Dalles City Council Monday endorsed local efforts to seek better power prices for aluminum companies and voted to send the mayor and city manager as part of a citizen delegation to Washington, D.C. Dave Grassi, speaking for a new coalition of citizens, told the council that he felt it extremely important for the mayor and city manager to join a delegation being formed. The city would pay travel costs for its two representatives. Jill Brown of the Sherman County Rodeo Club will be the Number 1 seed in the poles when the 1984 State High School Rodeo gets underway this weekend in Redmond [Oregon]. Brown, despite not placing in Sherman County’s own rodeo this past weekend, still wrapped up the No. 1 spot. She is also seeded No. 5 in breakaway at state. Other seeds for Sherman County at state are Jackie Eakin, in barrels, where she is seeded seventh; and Stacy Lane, 10th in the goat tying. 40 Years Ago, June 20, 1964 Robert (Bob) Welty was re-elected chairman and Mrs. C.C. Wilson vice chairman of the Wasco County Democrat Central Committee at its organizational meeting Friday night at Cherry Park Grange Hall. Alvina Morris was elected treasurer, to replace Thelma Sheets, who had held the position for the past two years. Previously Mrs. Morris had served as the committee’s secretary for nine years. 60 Years Ago, June 20, 1944 Wasco County was short cherry pickers today, with the harvest now getting well underway and expected to reach its peak this weekend. This was the announcement by Frank Van Buren, manager of the local farm labor office. He also was unable to fill calls today for other types of farm labor. The situation is not yet critical, however, inasmuch as virtually all orchards have at least some pickers. The migratory labor camp is now filled to capacity. Walter Blazer was elected to the position of director on the District 12 school board by the unanimous vote of 335 to 0, the ballot count revealed last night. Rumors that a last minute candidate might seek the position, by means of a write-in vote, brought numerous persons to the polls late yesterday. The rumors proved to be without foundation. Blazer will succeed Glenn L. Corey, who is retiring from the board. 80 Years Ago, June 20, 1924 Ted Mandronas, bank robber and bail jumper, who escaped the law, temporarily at least, and violated the trust of his friends, unwittingly did a service to Wasco County by fading out of sight so his bond could be declared forfeited. The $3,000 seized by the county paid the entire net costs of the May term of the circuit court, and left enough over to offer a substantial reward for his capture. Chief Harry Learnerd of The Dalles volunteer fire department stated this morning that the new fire truck was shipped from the east June 10 by freight. Subscriptions now total around $1,500, including the $500 donated by the county court. 100 Years Ago, June 20, 1904 The G.A.R. [Grand Army of Republic] at its annual encampment at Hood River [Oregon], elected the following officers: B.F. Pike, of Wasco, commander; T.J. Cunning, of Hood River, senior vice commander; E. Swan, Portland, past junior vice commander; G.W. Rigby, Pendleton, chaplain. 1. 1939 Steelhead - Indian Basketeers
    2. Chris Havnar
    3. Indian Basketeers ELVERT WILSON held down a forward berth throughout the season. His excellent defensive ability as well as his ability at hitting the basket made him a valuable man on the team. His back-board work often helped to bring victory. Elvert's graduation leave a spot hard to fill. BOB WILL playing his third and last year for the Indians saw plenty of action in a guard position. Bob was captain in the majority of the games and inspired the team to victory more than once. His defense ability and agility were far above average. Bob is another player who follows the graduation route. ROGER DICK held down a forward berth on the Indian five. His accurate shooting made him one of the big funs in The Dalles' scoring attack. Roger is only a junior and will be back to help form the nucleus of next year's team. ED CRANE played his first year on the Brave quintet. His defensive ability and ball-handling won the respect of all who watched him. Ed consistently scored in the crucial moments. He will return next year to fill a regular berth on the local five. DICK WILEY - There are few who will dispute the fact that Dick was one of the best shots on the team. His deadeye shooting and height made him a valuable member to the locals. Many games were put on ice by his shooting. Dick's graduation will leave a big gap to be filled. JACK BOTHWELL, the tallest man on the team, played center for the Indians. His shooting from inside the key marked him as a player of exceptional ability. Jack also spent a lot of his time working the back-board on defense. He is only a junior and much is expect of him next season. GLENN SPIVEY played his first year on the Indian squad. Although not a regular, Glenn will se plenty of action next year. His ball-handling ability marks him as an excellent prospect for 1940. DEWEY WAGENBLAST is the last of the four year lettermen. Although not a regular this season, Dewey has seen action in three previous campaigns. He could be called on to fill the forward position at any time. Dewey is another lost through graduation. WAYNE CAPPS was a reserve forward playing his first year of varsity ball. His speed made it hard for opponents to get a clear shot, and his shooting was good. He will return to see action in the new gym. LYLE SELLECK was a reserve guard on the local five. There is little doubt but that his spirit inspired the team to victory on several occasions. Whenever reserve power was needed Lyle could supply it. He is lost for competition in '40 via graduation.

    3. Leading Lights of the Classes SENIORS MAXINE HOLCOLMB - For such a small person Mac certainly has the ability to do things. She started out her freshman year with a bang by being president of her class. Along with editing the Steelhead, guiding the destinies of Booster, and being a member of the Board of Control for three years, Mac finds time to be the most popular girl in school. BOB WILL - This is the second time Bob has been selected as outstanding student in his class. Through his excellent speaking ability as well as his executive ability, Bob became president of his class and also of the A.S. B. He has the energy to be captain of the basketball team and brains to have the highest grade average in the senior class. We predict a brilliant future for Bob. ANCIL PAYNE - Ancil's ability as an excellent speaker combined with his capacity for work have kept him well up in school life. President of his class, president of the A.S.B., Torch member, debater, and bandsman - Ancil's accomplishments are something to look back on with pride. RUTH CRAMER - Ruth has also twice been mentioned as an outstanding student and she well deserves this honor. She has been affiliated with girls' clubs during all of her four years in high school, has been active in sports, and this year is the very efficient Drum Majorette of the Booster Drum Corps. Ruth's sunny disposition has bad much to do with her success in school. JUNIORS FRANCES SMITH - Frances' popularity with her classmates and their confidence in her ability are well shown by their having elected her class president once and treasurer twice. She is a bugler in the Booster Drum Corps and had an important in the junior play. JIM KINERSLEY - Jim is another one whose diversified talents have made him invaluable in nearly all types of activities. As electricians assistant he helped with all plays and performances on the stage. He participated in track and intramural sports, was president of his class, and an honor student. SOPHOMORES HELEN SPICKERMAN - Helen's first year in Senior High has give her a good start. Her classmates elected her secretary, and her scholastic standing is beyond reproach. Helen has all the pep and energy that go to make a willing worker and good student. We think she will go places the next two years. LAWRENCE BEAUDOIN - Buster is well on his way to becoming another Napoleon, being small but dynamic. President of his class, member of Torch, and an ardent baseball player, young Mr. Beaudoin is a great favorite among his classmates.

    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle’s Files July 4, 2004 20 Years Ago, July 5, 1984 Sam Knowland provided the pitching and Shawn Fulk the hitting as Pepsi completed a dream season by defeating Martin Marietta 3-0 for the Little League city championship Wednesday afternoon at 16th Street ball park. With the win, Pepsi brought the championship trophy back to the east side of town. Pepsi earned the right to play in the finale by winning the American LL title, while Marietta took the western. 40 Years Ago, July 6, 1964 The Dalles American Legion team split a double-header Sunday at Albany [Oregon], winning the first game 4 to 2 and dropping the second 4 to 3. Jerry Peterson was the winning pitcher for The Dalles in the opening game. In the second game, The Dalles pitcher John Lee and Terry Allen bumped heads going for a fly ball near the first base line. Lee’s head was cut and he was taken to a local hospital, where two stitches were taken to close the cut. Gene Hendrick, social science teacher at Wasco County Union High School, Maupin, and a former member of The Dalles High School facility, is one of 25 instructors awarded a resident fellowship by the Institute of American Studies. 60 Years Ago, July 5, 1944 Mrs. Thompson Coberth, chairman of the work at the Red Cross surgical dressing station at Hotel Dalles, reports for the month of June, 5,525 dressings made by 58 women who have spent 486 work hours there this month. Of these dressings, 1,150 are credited to Dufur, where Mrs. Louis Bleim is chairman. 80 Years Ago, July 5, 1922 Chief of police Frank Heater, in making a report to the city council for the month of June stated Thursday night that 59 arrests had been made in his department, resulting in convictions in all but two cases, with subsequent fines imposed in the amount of $530, of which $350 was collected and the remainder served out in jail sentences. Of the 59 arrests, 39 were for drunkenness, seven were involved in liquor law violations, five were beggars and the rest were taken in for fighting or disorderly conduct. The local Knights of Pythias lodge will meet this evening for the semiannual installation of officers, at which, Louis Green, deputy grand chancellor, will be the [sic] installing officers. Those who will be conducted to the various chairs in the lodge are as follow: L.L. Mohr, chancellor commander; Fred W. Wilson, vice-chancellor; H.F. Cramer, prelate; H.E. Barr, master-at-works; Bert McClure, master at arms; Ira Waterman, inner guard; C.C. Creighton, outer guard. 100 Years Ago, July 5, 1904 A skyrocket exploded last evening, struck an inch board in the side of the White House saloon, pierced it completely and split it for a distance of about a foot. It was very fortunate that it did not come in contact with any individual, or we would have had a fatal accident to chronicle today. The recorder’s court had five cases of drunkenness this morning as the result of patriotic exhilaration yesterday. Two of those were retained to work on the streets and the others departed, promising hereafter to conduct themselves soberly. Slot machines and other gambling devices were removed from all places of business early this morning. Drays were busy during the early hours removing these to warehouses or shipping them away. Thus the way is being cleared for the new regime in municipal matters. Have a Safe and Fun 4th of July 2004! Hillgen, was convicted by a jury in the circuit court last night after three hours and 47 minutes of deliberation. Only one ballot was taken, it was reported. Quinn was convicted Tuesday of the same charge. Both will probably be sentenced tomorrow morning. James Thrall, known character of The Dalles, for whose arrest Sheriff Levi Chrisman has held a warrant for more than a year on a charge of forgery, was arrested by the chief of police at Vancouver, Washington last night according to word reaching this city today. Thrall was indicted by a grand jury here upon the complaint of Henry McCullough, but disappeared before Chrisman had issued a warrant for his arrest. 100 Years Ago, June 12, 1904 G.A. Young & Sons shipped two trainloads of sheep to Colorado from Shaniko [Oregon] last week. The deal is the most extensive by any one grower in the history of Wasco County. The buyer is B.F. Saunders of Salt Lake who paid $1.50 straight through. The shipment was made up of an exceptionally fine bunch of ewes and lambs. 1. Klindt family from Denmark to The Dalles
    2. Lisa Petersen
    3. Hi, I'm looking for further information on Hans Jacob Klindt and his wife Caroline Olesen who settled in The Dalles in the 1880s. They were born and married in Denmark, and had the following children, all born in Oregon: Thomas Klindt, born 1889, married Mildred, still in The Dalles in 1920 but after that I don't know Julius Klindt, born 1892, married Martha Gray, probably stayed in The Dalles, died 10 Feb 1981 Clara Klindt, born 1895, married ??? Carlson, moved to Portland, died Jul 1976 Lenora Klindt, born 1903, married ??? Schreiber, moved to Brush Prairie WA, died Mar 1982 Caroline Olesen Klindt died 10 July 1904, and Hans Jacob Klindt (aka Hans John Klindt) died 7 May 1926. I am descended from Caroline's maternal grandfather. These Klindts are apparently not connected to the Henry Klindt family. Would really like contact with descendants. Thanks in advance for any tips. 2. Sherry Kaseberg
    3. History of the Columbia River Valley from The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. II, Illustrated. Chicago, The S.J. Clarke Publishing Company, 1928. p. 86 JOSEPH STADELMAN Although a native of the east, Joseph Stadelman has spent practically his entire life in Oregon, becoming one of the leading merchants of The Dalles, and his success has been commensurate with his industry and ability. He was born on Hempstead, Long Island, and when a child made the journey to the west with his parents, Joseph and Mary (Rath) Stadelman, who settled on a donation land claim near The Dalles in 1881. Here the father engaged in farming until his death in 1923 and the mother still lives in The Dalles. Joseph Stadelman, Jr., attended the public schools of this city until he reached the age of twelve years, when he became a wage earner, obtaining work in the produce store of Seufert Brothers, local merchants. His next position was that of messenger boy for the Western Union Telegraph Company, with which he spent about six months, afterward becoming a clerk in the D. Herbring dry goods store. In the shop of Maier & Benton he learned the trade of tinsmith, working for the firm for three years, and later was employed for six months in the hardware store of Mays and Crowe. In 1898 he became associated with his brother, P.J. Stadelman, a dealer in fruit and ice, acquiring a third of the stock. They also handled coal and wood and in 1909 erected a large plant for the manufacture of ice, afterward constructing a cold storage building, likewise of extensive proportions. In 1925 Joseph Stadelman disposed of his holdings in the Stadelman Ice Company and his brother has since been the! owner of the business. On June 24, 1914, Joseph Stadelman and N.A. Bonn had purchased the hardware business of the Walther-Williams Hardware and Implement Company on Second street but did not take over the stock of implements. The store was established in 1887 by Grant Mays and L.E. Crowe. It was afterward conducted by the firm of Sexton & Walther and on the retirement of the senior partner the business was reorganized, at which time the style of the Walther-Williams Hardware & Implement Company was adopted. The firm of Stadelman & Bonn carries a complete line of hardware and the stock includes paint and oil, house furnishings, stoves and ranges, plumbers' supplies and glassware, as well as guns, ammunition, fishing tackle and other articles used by sportsmen. The stock is valued at thirty thousand dollars and the firm handles goods of the highest quality. This is one of the best hardware stores in eastern Oregon and its patronage is drawn from a wide territory. Throughout ! his residence in Oregon, a period of forty years, Mr. Bonn has been connected with this establishment and knows every phase of the trade. The partners are experienced business men of mature judgment and their commercial transactions have always balanced up with the principles of truth and honor, which constitute the foundation of success in every line of endeavor and without which no commercial organization can long endure. Mr. Stadelman was married October 8, 1909, to Miss Nellie M. Gilhousen, a native of Kahokia, Missouri, and a daughter of John and Julia Gilhousen. For many years the father was engaged in farming in Missouri and since his retirement has resided at The Dalles. He has reached the eighty-eighth milestone on life's journey and his wife is eighty-four years of age but as alert and active as most women of fifty. To Mr. and Mrs. Gilhousen were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. Those who survive are William, who lives at The Dalles; Charles of New York city; Paxton, a resident of Des Moines, Iowa; Ernest of Portland, Oregon; and Nellie M. All are natives of Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Stadelman have a daughter, Joan Catherine, who was born February 14, 1914, at The Dalles and is attending high school. The Stadelman residence was erected a few years ago and ranks with the finest in the county. It is a pressed brick structure of attractive design and has nine rooms in addition to a full basement. The house contains hardwood floors and is supplied with all modern conveniences. Mr. Stadelman is an accomplished musician as well as a capable business man and in 1891 played corner in the Third Regiment Band of the Oregon National Guard. Resolute and energetic, he has converted his opportunities to tangible assets and is esteemed for the qualities to which he owes his success. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p. 152 PETER JOHN STADELMAN At an early age Peter John Stadelman manifested that spirit of energy and self-reliance which spurs the individual ever onward and upward and for thirty-five years he has been an outstanding figure in business circles of The Dalles. He is also a financier of high standing and for a decade has been mayor of the city, which has made notable progress during that period. He was born in Hempstead, New York, and his father, Joseph Stadelman, was a native of the Austrian Tyrol. In 1869 he sailed for the United States, settling on Long Island, and for a time followed the trade of carpenter at Hempstead. Next he purchased a tract of land and raised garden truck, which he marketed in New York city. Learning of the opportunities afforded in the west, he sold the property and in 1881 came to The Dalles, Oregon. He leased the old Catholic mission donation land claim of six hundred and forty acres and devoted the remainder of his life to the cultivation of the farm. His wife, Mary (Rath) ! Stadelman, was born in the state of New York and they became parents of two sons, Peter John and Joseph, whose biographies are published in this volume. The father's demise occurred in March, 1923, but the mother still resides at The Dalles. Peter J. Stadelman attended the public schools of this city until he was twelve years of age, when he became a newsboy, and carried the Oregonian, Portland's leading paper. At the same time he obtained a position in The Dalles post office, in which he spent about four years, serving under Michael Nolan, who was then postmaster and also mayor of the city. Much of the work devolved upon Mr. Stadelman, who acted as assistant postmaster before he reached the age of sixteen. In 1893 he ventured in business for himself, opening a fruit and vegetable store at The Dalles, and a year later broadened the scope of his activities. During the winter he cut ice from the nearby lakes and with the assistance of his brother peddled it in the summer. In 1898 the business was expanded to a wholesale and retain fruit and ice company, in which P.J. Stadelman owned two-thirds of the stock, and the remainder was held by Joseph Stadelman. They handled Oregon and California fruits for the eastern ma! rkets, also supplying the western markets with fruit from the east and the south, and likewise became dealers in coal and wood. In 1909 they completed a large plant for the manufacture of ice and later erected a cold storage building provided with ten large rooms supplied with facilities for keeping perishable fruit. The building is usually filled with apples, which are secured in the fall and kept in cold storage until spring. In 1925 Joseph Stadelman withdrew from the concern and the business is now controlled by Peter J. Stadelman, who has admitted his sons, Wilbur and George P., to a partnership. To the Stadelman Company belongs the distinction of having the largest ice and cold storage plant in eastern Oregon. In 1927 the firm shipped over one hundred thousand dollars worth of cherries alone and in addition sent out peaches, pears, apricots, strawberries, apples and vegetables in large quantities. The cars are iced at The Dalles plant and the shipments extend throughout! the eastern states. Each step in the development of this large enterprise has resulted from carefully matured plans and tireless effort, and in its conduct Mr. Stadelman brings to bear unerring judgment and marked administrative power. These characteristics are also displayed in the control of the Citizens National Bank, a local institution, of which he is the president. In 1920 he was one of the organizers of the bank, of which Dr. J.A. Reuter is vice president, and H.E. Green serves as cashier. Their associates on the board of directors are John Van Dellen, John Heimrich, Arthur Seufert, Dr. B.C. Olinger, H.L. Huck and George Abarr. The bank is capitalized at one hundred and sixty thousand dollars and its resources amount to more than one million dollars. This is a reliable, prosperous moneyed institution and the spirit behind its service is one of helpfulness. In 1907 Mr. Stadelman and his brother purchased from their father the old mission farm, which adjoins the city, ! and they still own the property, which they have converted into one of the finest ranches in Wasco county. In 1904 Peter J. Stadelman married Mrs. May Hicks, a native of Wasco county and a daughter of Robert Kelly, who served as sheriff of the county for many years. Mrs. Stadelman passed away July 10, 1924, leaving two sons, Wilbur and George Peter, both natives of The Dalles and graduates of the local high school. Wilbur Stadelman attended the University of Oregon at Eugene for one and a half years and has charge of the fruit department of his father's business. His brother is a sophomore at the State University and a member of its football team, taking a prominent part in athletic sports. The sons are keenly interested in the business and give every promise of being able to continue it successfully when their father is ready to retire. Mr. Stadelman is affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. In 1910 he became a member of the city council, with which he was identified for four years, and made an excellent record. On November 4, 1918, he was elected mayor of The Dalles and has since been retained in that office. The welfare of the city has ever been his first concern and his administration has been beneficially resultant. He is an earnest advocate of good roads and schools and his personality has been an inspiration to progress. Mr. Stadelman has never deviated from the course sanctioned by conscience and honor and belongs to that desirable class of citizensw who constitute the strength and motive power of every community in which they are found.

    3. This is an offer to transcribe to the list the Stadelman entries in History of the Columbia River from The Dalles to the Sea by Lockley, Vol. II. if no one has done so. I'm sure that copies must be available at both the Library and the Discovery Center there. Unfortunately, it could be some time before I'm back for a visit.
