In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an Associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. After attending both Columbia Gorge Community College and Yakima Valley Community College, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, graduating from boot Camp at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, on April 16, 2004. Surnames: May, Brookman Prominent Wasco County Historian Pat May Dies At Age 81 Longtime The Dalles historian and steward of the Wasco County Pioneer Association’s historic photo collection, Rosemary “Pat” May, 81, died Tuesday, July 13, in a Vancouver, Washington care facility. She was born July 24, 1922, in Little Rock, Arkansas, the only child to Daniel and Helen (Rice) Place. She grew up in Little Rock and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1940. She met William Edwin May at a church dance while he was stationed in the U.S. Army at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and they married in 1943. While her Husband was serving overseas, she and her mother moved to The Dalles, where She lived until moving to a care facility in Vancouver in 2003. In the late 1940’s and early ‘50s she worked as a legal secretary for Tracy Barton and then became a full-time homemaker. Prior to her marriage, she worked at an ammunition plant in Arkansas, measure- Ing and weighing gunpowder for artillery shells. In the early ‘50s she Served in the Ground Observer Corps, which had a small observatory station on The roof of the Natatorium swimming pool. She was an amateur historian and an Avid reader and was known for her quilts and afghans. In the ‘50s and ‘60s She and her husband were avid gun collectors, when she collected derringer and Pepperbox pistols. She and her husband collected historic pictures of the local area and made 4x8 Foot photo storyboards for the Wasco County Pioneers Association, which are Still shown yearly. She served on The Dalles Historic Landmarks Commission for 17 years. In her younger years, she and her family were members of First Christian Church, Where she served as a Sunday School teacher and later was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational. She was also a member of League of Women Voters, a Cub Scout Den Leader and enjoyed Bible studies. She is survived by her son, Danny J. and his wife, Terri May, Vancouver, Washington; her daughter, Helen and her husband, Dave Brookman, Boise, Idaho; and two grandsons Nicholas May and Christopher Brookman. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, William, on July 23, 1990. Memorial services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 21, at 11 a.m. the Reverend Karl Vercouteren officiating. Inurnment will follow at Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery. Private Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory. Memorial donations may be made to Wasco County Pioneer Association, P.O. The early 1940’s newspapers had columns from several small towns plus The Dalles articles included. I can only transcribe long-hand a certain amount of these articles in the two hours available to me. These are the items I have been able to transcribe today. I was pleased to find the following article – in 2002, I had a request to find something about these ashes after submitting an article about the ashes being found. I couldn’t find a follow up article close to the November occurrence at that time. Perseverance pays off. Earline Wasser The Dalles Optimist Friday, January 2, 1942 page three DISCOVERY OF SMALL BOX REVEALS ASHES OF PIONEER The ashes of William Offield found recently by a telephone line crew in a small cardboard box beside ahe [sic] Old Oregon Trail section of U.S. highway No. 30, just east of this city, have been claimed by H.L. Smith of Umatilla and have been forwarded to him by C.R. Callaway, Wasco county coroner. Mrs. Herman Schilling of Grass Valley [Oregon] who had read of the discovery of the box, the label on which indicated that it contained the mortal remains of Offield, called at the coroner’s office and informed him that Smith had been given custody of the ashes. The coroner received the following explanatory letter from Smith: “In regard to your letter of November 27 and the remains of William Offield, please send the ashes to me as it was his wish to have them scattered over Mount Hood, but to date have not been able to do so, but soon will. “I was moving some of my belongings from The Dalles, about five weeks ago and had a flat tire near the spot where the package was found. When I reached Umatilla [Oregon] I missed the package and wrote The Dalles but got no reply. “Please send the package to me, C.O.D.” Among letters from relatives of Mr. Offield, Mr. Callaway received one from Lydia Andross of Grants Pass [Oregon], who said the ashes were those of an uncle, an Oregon pioneer who had come to Oregon at the age of 10 about 1850. He had lost his father, she said, who died enroute by wagon train. Born at Kahoka, Mo., October 8, 1857, Mr. Davis came to Wasco county in 1882 to homestead at Antelope, making the trip west by Southern Pacific railroad to San Francisco and then to The Dalles by boat. A continuous resident of Wasco County since 1897, resiing in the same house located at 1123 East 11th street ever since. Enjoying good health until confinement to bed several months ago, Mr. Davis has a sister living who is also in her nineties. In addition to Mrs. Davis, his immediate family includes a daughter, Mrs. .Maggie McClure who makes her home with her parents and a son, Earl whose home is in Mulino. Another daughter, Mrs. Susan Foster died several years ago. ----- Clipping found among miscellaneous memorobilia of Mrs. W. E. Gilhousen, presently being cataloged for the Gilhousen Family Association archives. It is interesting to note that Mrs. Gilhousen's husband, William Edward, was also born in Kahoka, MO, as were several members of the Gilhousen family who lived, at least for a time, in Wasco County. It is doubtful there is a familial connection between the Davises and the Gilhousens, but both were active in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in The Dalles (now the Evangelical Church, still located at the corner of 12th & G Streets), and were longtime friends. It appears from the foregoing clipping, the friendship may have predated their arrival in Wasco County. Anyway, I wanted to transcribe and share the clipping. The Dalles Chronicle July 11,2004 page A9 [Text Only] This was the front page picture for the April 20, 1966 edition of The Chronicle. The caption read: "New fill over Badger Creek on Chenowith Road was rising rapidly this week, with its center about the location of the scraper. Right hand margin is shown by stakes. After the fill is completed, perhaps by the end of this week, the bridge will be torn down, said Wasco County Road Supervisor C.D. {Cotton) Light." The bridge was located at the foot of Sevenmile Road, and Badger Creek was one of the many that flooded during the Christmas holiday of 1964. The photo was taken less than four months after the flood. Russ Brown knew the answer, and suggested that the worker visible on the Cat [Caterpiller tractor] might be Albert Elton of Elton Construction. Dave Cartwright said he used to play under the bridge before it was filled in. Bob Sallee mentioned this bridge originally was across the Deschutes River at Maupin [Oregon]. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle’s Files July 11, 2004 40 Years Ago, July 11, 1964 The Dalles High School’s yell squad for the coming year placed third on Monday and second on Tuesday in daily competition at the rally clinic the girls are attending on the Lewis & Clark Campus. Squad members are Diane Forebe, yell captain; and yell leaders Kathy Monaghan, Cathy Jackson, Kathy Duvall and Barb Williams. Jim Dunahoo scored a low net 73 at golf play held recently at The Dalles Country Club. Twenty players competed with Bob Twiss but only five finished. Twiss was one of those who completed play. 60 Years Ago, July 11, 1944 The first 20 units in the federal public housing project on the Bluff street grounds will be ready for occupancy, Monday, July 17, it was announced here today by L.H. Davies, housing manager for EPHA projects, who has his headquarters at Lebanon [Oregon]. Opened first for occupancy will be furnished units, as the EPHA has had furniture in storage for these units and wishes to get it installed, Davies said. Fire loss in The Dalles during the month of June totaled $105.45 it was revealed by the monthly report submitted to the city council last night by Charles Roth Jr., fire chief. 80 Years Ago, July 11, 1924 Much 25 bushel wheat, and an average of 20 bushels to the acre for all of Wasco County, is the report of crop conditions generally brought back to the city last night by County Agent C.W. Daigh. County Agent Daigh has been in the wheat fields practically all of his time since the latter part of June. Throughout his tour of the grain fields where the harvest is in full swing, the county agent declares the wheat to be in excellent shape. Except for the plastering and the installation of furniture, the new Chenowith district two room school just west of the city is practically finished, it was reported by Pete Peterson, the contractor, this morning. County superintendent A.E. Gronewald said today that the county will have two new schools next term, the Antelope [Oregon] district plans being underway for a three or four room building. 100 Years Ago, July 11, 1904 Mr. Thomas Brogan, living on Antelope creek, lost about $1000 in the waterspout of last Wednesday, in the destruction of hay cut and that was ready to harvest. Yesterday afternoon a sad accident happened in Mill Creek at the old mill. Soon after 2 o’clock Charles Kreft, about 17 years of age, oldest son of Mrs. Paul Kreft, of this city, was drowned at the old mill near the foot of Third Street. He, in company with some other boys, were bathing at the time, and in an attempt to swim across the creek at that point, which perhaps is over 100 feet wide and ten to fifteen feet deep, it is supposed he was taken with cramps and sank before help could reach him. The Dalles Optimist Friday, January 7, 1944 page two Tygh Ridge Boy Leaves for Camp Harold Bohlender left New Years day for his camp after spending his furlough with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Louie Schrieber and children of Friend [Oregon] and Aaron Easton were dinner guests at the Garfield Easton home on New Years day. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gardner were callers at the George Bourland home Sunday. Local residents shopping in The Dalles Monday included Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Easton, John Godknecht, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Underhill, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hulse and Mrs. Mary Hulse. Those who attended the dance at Tygh Valley New Year’s eve from this vicinity were Mr. and Mrs. Frank May, Stanley Hillgen, Miss Genevieve Hillgen, Francis Hillgen and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gardner. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch and daughter, Dorothy, came from Sisters [Oregon] Friday evening to spend New Years with Mr. and Mrs. George Bourland. Mr. Busch left Sunday for his work at Sisters but Mrs. Busch and daughter are staying at the Bourlands for a while. Leland Hendricks went to Portland last week to be with his wife who has been there taking care of her mother. Clarence Gardner took two loads of stock to Portland Tuesday night and Wednesday for Garfield Hudson and Garfield Easton. Jim Hunt took a load of hogs to Portland Tuesday for Jim Underhill. Lodge at Tygh Has Xmas Party Tygh Valley – Tuesday evening of last week the local Rebekahs held their annual Christmas party, beginning with an 8:30 pot luck supper after which games and contests were the amusement of the evening. One feature which held fun and excitement for the group was the sale of :white elephants” which were donated by Rebekahs and friends. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree graced one side of the lodge room and gifts were exchanged by the members and their guests. Mrs. Howard Conley left last week for San Francisco [California] where she will visit her son, Tommy Gibson, who has been transferred from Corpus Christi, Texas, to the west coast. Miss Barbara Crabtree accompanied the Misses Henrietta and Evelyn Peetz to Portland last week where she visited relatives for several days. Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Dodd returned Sunday from Portland where they spent their Christmas vacation visiting with relatives. DIES AT YAKIMA Word was received here Friday of the death of Mrs. Emma N. Chastain at the home of her son, Frank, at Yakima [Washington]. Mrs. Chastain, who made her home here for a number of years before going to Yakima, has many relatives and friends in this and the Wamic [Oregon] community to mourn her passing. Mrs. Frank Bayer, Jr. and daughter, Julia Catherine, of Grass Valley [Oregon] accompanied the Willis Brittain family home Tuesday of last week and spent several days visiting here. Mr. and Mrs. William Aldridge of Wamic visited here a short time Wednesday at the Willis Norval home. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jones of Klamath Falls [Oregon] and Mrs. Esther Jones of Madras [Oregon] arrived here on Thursday evening and spent two days visiting at the home of Mrs. Norman Jones’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ralph Delco of Wamic was a business caller here Monday morning. Mrs. Monica Muller left this week for Long Beach, California, where she expects to spend the remainder of the winter. Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Chastain and Leonard Chastain of Harper, Oregon, arrived here Sunday evening to attend funeral services for Mrs. Emma Chastain, held at Maupin Tuesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. L.O. He was born June 2, 1868, in Lawrence, Kansas. Mr. Evans is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Effie Oaks and Mrs. Myrtle Cooper of The Dalles, Mr. Lou Potts of Stevenson, Washington, Mrs. Nellie Sauters of Lyle [Washington] and Mrs. Ellen Bowers of Bend [Oregon]; a son, Roy Evans of The Dalles, and a brother, Charles Evans of Centralia, Washington. The Dalles Chronicle Sunday, December 2, 1951 Dalles Man Dies In Truck Plunge Roy Alvin Evans, 55, Route 2, The Dalles, died in a local hospital Friday evening of injuries received two hours earlier in an auto accident about three miles west of Lyle [Washington] on a private road during a driving rainstorm. The pickup truck in which Evans was a passenger left the road and plunged down a 50 foot ravine, throwing Evans and his brother-in-law, Erwin Sauter, 60, Lyle, out of the vehicle, according to the Washington state patrol. Evans, critically injured when the truck rolled over him, was rushed by Sauter’s son to a Dalles hospital where he died at 6:15 p.m. Friday. Also taken to the hospital was Sauter, whose condition Saturday was described as satisfactory. Sauter’s left leg was injured and he received lacerations of the right eye. Funeral services for Evans will be held at 10:330 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Callaway chapel with the Reverend N.A. Sorenson officiating. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will officiate at graveside services with burial at Dutch Flat cemetery. Evans was a lifetime resident of this area, a veteran of World war 1 and was born here October 2, 1896. He is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Erwin Sauter, Lyle [Washington]; Mrs. Cy Cooper, Winchester Bay [Oregon]; Mrs. Fred Oaks, The Dalles; Mrs. Earl Bowers, Prineville [Oregon]; and Mrs. John Potts, Stevenson, Washington. Member of Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society, Darlena “Dee” Hill, has published a book, “Sheriffs of Wasco County: 150 Years, 1854-2004”. Dee spent seven years researching the material in this book. The book contains photographs [where available] and copies of actual documents. The book is written chronologically but there is no index. On page 10, the sheriffs are listed by name, year served chronologically and whether appointed or elected to office. The book has 140 pages. Three-Mile Cemetery, The Dalles, Oregon This is one large monument dedicated September 10, 1984 located in the Three-Mile Cemetery. It represents a common grave of burials from the Masonic Cemetery also located in The Dalles. The original Masonic Cemetery was “vacated” and residential homes are located on that property now. Mrs. Lulu D. Crandall compiled a record of these burials in 1939. Hers is the only list of interments ever made – and it is not complete. None kept at time of burial [records I must presume] and there were no burials for many years. Her notes say the Masonic Cemetery was first used in 1864. Looking Back: A Glimpse through The Chronicle’s Files June 6, 2004 20 Years Ago, June 6, 1984 At the request of the county juvenile department, city police will begin enforcing the state curfew law in The Dalles, Jim Roth, director of the county juvenile department, announced today that the enforcement would begin. The city repealed its curfew law in 1982 following a U.S. Supreme Court decision that a similar Louisiana ordinance was invalid. The Union Bobcats have been growling rather loudly all season long until Tuesday afternoon when Scott Byrd and Jeff McCall snuck up behind them and shoved an overdose of tranquilizers down their throats. Byrd accounted for all the Wahtonka scoring with a three run home run, while McCall-a cool, lanky sophomore-kept the Bobcats under sedation for six innings on the mound. The duo led the Eagles to a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the state Class A baseball playoffs in The Dalles. The Eagles, now 20-6, have to wait until this evening to find out where they will travel for Friday’s semifinals. 40 Years Ago, June 6, 1964 Members of Local 720 of the Culinary Alliance voted 101-23 Friday in favor of a strike if attempts at negotiation fail, Union Secretary Mrs. Frances Webber said this morning. The vote represented about 60 percent of the local’s membership within its jurisdiction, which includes The Dalles, Rufus, and Arlington, Mrs. Webber said. Susan Bronkey, DHS senior this fall, has been chosen by the Oregon United Church Youth from among 18 applicants to be one of two delegates to the United Church Youth National Forum to be held in Washington, D.C. June 27 to July 3. Richard White, director of counseling and guidance at The Dalles High School, was also chosen to be the adult adviser to the Oregon delegation. The forum, under the sponsorship of the First Congregational Church, will draw young people from across the United States. Theme of the form is “The Christian Person and Political Action.” 60 Years Ago, June 6, 1944 Due to inability to obtain and [sic] adequate supply of trained help it will be necessary to close one of the floors of the state hospital at The Dalles, it was announced today by Dr. J.M. Odell, hospital superintendent. As a result of this curtailment no more patients will be admitted to the state hospital here until the situation improves Dr. Odell said. The annual Farmers Union picnic was held Saturday at Dufur [Oregon] with good attendance reported. The usual festivities, including races and a baseball game were enjoyed. Fewer persons than usual attended from The Dalles, due to the gasoline shortage. Mrs. Hattie Fulkerson and Miss Emma Elizabeth Dyball were initiated as new members of the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the meeting held Friday evening, June 2, at the community room at the civic auditorium. Mrs. Herbert R. Matthieu, conducted the business session when it was announced that a sewing club meeting of the group would be held June 8 at the home of Mrs. Robert Holmes. 80 Years Ago, June 6, 1924 Willard Quinn will face trial tomorrow morning on indictments No. 1 charging him with the theft of a bull from Cleve Hillgen. Judge Fred W. Wilson in the circuit court his [sic] morning denied Quinn a change of venue on the grounds that Wasco County was largely cattle country and that the defendant could not obtain a fair and impartial jury. Judge Wilson held that the grounds for a change of venue were not justified and that Wasco County was not largely a cattle country. 100 Years Ago, June 6, 1904 W. M. Lazarshak, an employee of the Mt. Hood Lumber Company at Hood River [Oregon], met his death Saturday afternoon by being struck by a log at the foot of a chute. He was knocked into the river and floated a mile down the stream before his body was recovered. He was a married man, about 35 years old. His wife lives at Allegheny City, PA. Looking Back: A Glimpse through The Chronicle’s Files June 27, 2004 20 Years Ago, June 27, 1984 The Oregon Court of Appeals Wednesday reversed its earlier ruling upholding the incorporation of Rajneeshpuram, the Centeral Oregon city founded by followers of Indian guru, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The new opinion means the Rajneeshees must go back to Wasco County and go through the difficult exceptions process in their quest for a city on land zoned for farm use. Fred Spivey, who has been on the Northern Wasco County PUD board for 20 years, submitted his resignation at the June meeting of the board Tuesday night. 40 Years Ago, June 27, 1964 The Wasco County Republican Central Committee elected a new chairman and acted to fill a ballot gap at a meeting this week. Elected as new chairman succeeding Joe Kelly, who has served since 1956, is Charles Harding, an employee at Bonn’s Market. Chosen as Republican candidate for the two-year term on the Port of The Dalles Commission is John Zapp. The Republicans had no candidate for the position in the May primary. Zapp ran for the nomination for the four year term and was narrowly defeated. 60 Years Ago, June 27, 1944 Finis was written in the Wasco County justice court this morning in the Mill Creek “fish poisoning” case, which for weeks has stirred the ire of local sportsmen. More than 1,000 trout and other fish died when ammonia was dumped from a refrigeration plant into Mill Creek early this spring, it was estimated by authorities. Harry A. Beeler of Pendleton [Oregon], a service man for the Harris Ice Making company appeared this morning before L.M. Martin, acting justice of the peace and entered a plea of guilty to the charge of polluting the creek with ammonia when he was cleaning out a refrigeration plant at Pines Dairy. Two men were burned, one so severely that his condition today was reported at The Dalles hospital to be critical in an early morning fire that destroyed a log cabin at the Ward Webber orchard in the Chenowith District. L.T. Cleveland suffered burns that cover almost a fourth of his body. Floyd Morris suffered lesser burns. 80 Years Ago, July 27, 1924 The law took a short cut this morning and as a result Dale Heath, who says he is from Bend [Oregon], is behind the bars, a suspected saddle and automobile thief. Within 10 minutes after Chief of Police Frank Heater had locked Heath in jail, and five saddles, which were believed to have been stolen property were seized, Sheriff Gard of Madras [Oregon] telephoned Sheriff Levi Chrisman that five saddles had been stolen earlier this morning from the barn of Bolter at the foot of Cow Canyon. Two men, apparently Washington ranchers, celebrating a recent purchase of land or stock, drank so much moonshine on a pleasure trip to Hood River [Oregon] that they only got halfway – and fell asleep in an automobile which in some manner stopped in the middle of the highway just east of The Dalles today. The youngster escaped from the Boys and Girls Aid Society, of Portland, he having been sent there from that city for larceny. Detective Hawley will arrive today and take the boy back. Senior Will and Testament Article I We, the class of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-nine of The Dalles High School, being of more or less sound mind and fairly impartial disposition, do ordain and establish this to be our last will and testament. The class as a whole bequeaths the following: To The Dalles High School - we leave our traditions as a worthy, though unattainable goal for their efforts. To the School Board - we leave the satisfaction and relief that should come from our graduation and will a vote of appreciation for all they have done for us. To Mr. Menegat - we leave the hall in peace or ? To Mr. McCulloch - we leave all our troubles. To the faculty - we give a vote of thanks for putting up with us as long as they did. To our advisers - we bestow our thanks for their grand assistance. To the boys of the junior class we leave the privilege of growing mustaches and to the girls of the aforementioned class we leave all of the junior boys.
