Martin, of The Dalles, Ore., was taken from the river one-half mile west of Cooks about 8 o'clock Wednesday evening. Two hours before, the floating body had been discovered by members of the S.P. & S. railroad crew working near that place. Sheriff Reid and Coroner Wright were notified and left immediately for the scene. Identity of the remains was made by Mr. Martin and a brother, of The Dalles. He was a student at The Dalles High School, the father said. The family home was on Chenowith road. Oscar Gardner and son, White Salmon Undertakers, were called to the scene in time to assist in removing the body when it was taken to White Salmon. This was posted for reference only. Georga and anyone else who might have been offended by my previous comments: I was merely asking if the poster was affiliated with the website, or did she have any personal knowledge of the site or its owners. I apologize if I offended anyone with my comments about the hucksters who have ripped off many innocent genealogists in recent years. The problem with the hucksters has been a particularly troublesome one for U.S. GenWeb, as our entire project is volunteer-based. The volunteers who have contributed many hours and megabytes of data over the years have a serious problem with commercial sites offering *our* data for a fee. More importantly, it is my job as list administrator to make sure this list abides by Rootsweb's terms of service, which include a prohibition on commercial advertising. There are only 3 ways a list admin can separate sharing from advertising: 1)if the poster asks permission before posting a link to a commercial site, 2)if the poster states s/he has no affiliation with the site, or 3)as a response to a list posting. My questions were earnest and my comments were meant to be explanatory. I didn't mean to make anyone feel they were under attack. I am genuinely hoping someone will know something about the new web site and I encourage its discussion on this list, as previously stated. -- Cheri

Wilson has kindly offered the use of her parlors for the reception of the Glee club members from the University of Oregon following their concert this evening. Being near the opera house, Mrs. Wilsons home will be an ideal place for the function. So quietly did J.C. Baldwin pass away at his home Saturday night that even those who watched by him were not aware for a moment that he ceased breathing. Mr. Baldwin had not been a strong man for many years and about 10 days ago he was taken ill with neuralgia. To Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin were born five children, Frank, Edward, Martha, Lily and Wallace, but only Edward and Martha survive with Mrs. Baldwin. The funeral took place this afternoon with Reverend D.V. Poling of the Congregational church officiating. The city received a very acceptable gift yesterday when the chemical fire engine arrived at the depot. It is probable that it will not be unpacked until Mr. Long from whom it was purchased arrives to test it. Gypsy J.H. The prisoner was unable to furnish bail to the amount of $100 so was lodged in jail. Mr.and Mrs. E.C. Price celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary Christmas day with a dinner at the Hotel Shipherd. Covers were laid for Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Crandall, Mrs. W.H. Groat, Stephen Price and Carlton Groat, and the host and hostess. (From The Chronicle, December 29, 1899) Just after the new chemical fire engine had been tested this afternoon, the fire bell sounded an alarm and a flue in McInernys brick building was discovered to be burning. The fire was soon put out with no particular damage. An accident occurred at the same time when C.A. Borders horse seemed to object to the new engine getting all the attention. The horse started out for water and dragged the cart after him. He ran into a young man on Second street and ran over a Jap on First street but did not injure either. Finally, he made a dead stop at the undertakers on Fourth street. He was little the worse for the experience.
