    3. Jackie ... which murder trial in Antelope are you inquiring about? My great grandfather, Herbert Sherry, was killed in a saloon in Antelope in 1887 by Jack Thompson. I have yet to read about the trial. Audrey Cox Vogelpohl I'm sure they wouldn't have missed a murder trial in town. > > Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of the library's microfilm holdings in The Dalles? I mean, The Dalles' own library. I would guess that they would have those and you could get them through interlibrary loan, no matter what your location.

    3. Jackie, I'd have to check my source documents to be absolutely certain of this, but I believe the newspaper in The Dalles was going strong during the 1880s, and I know that they covered the area pretty thoroughly. I'm sure they wouldn't have missed a murder trial in town. Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of the library's microfilm holdings in The Dalles? I mean, The Dalles' own library. I would guess that they would have those and you could get them through interlibrary loan, no matter what your location. Another great resource, as unlikely as it might seem, is the genealogy section of the library at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. They have an outstanding collection of newspaper microfilm as well as tons of other stuff. The now-retired former head librarian was heavily into genealogy, and he amassed quite a collection at the college library. I was just there about a month ago and I distinctly remember seeing that they even had newspaper microfilms from the Condon paper there. I'm not sure how far west that collection goes, but that would be worth a shot. They could probably tell you who does have them, even if they don't. 3. I think you'll find that the entire area south of The Dalles was fairly well represented in all Wasco Co. news media of the time period you're talking about, Audrey. My family was concentrated down around 13-mile, 15-mile, Friend, Victor and in that area, and I've had pretty good success with getting info from sources in The Dalles from late 19th century until about 1930-ish. After that, the coverage dropped off except in the more rural newspapers or just the "news of outlying areas" sections of The Dalles' paper. Considering the date and more easterly location of Antelope, I wonder if maybe the Burns area genealogy society or even Umatilla County's genealogy society might have some information about your ancestor. It would be worth a try. Regarding historical societies & such, this is a question I've been meaning to ask, too. I know there was once that type of society in The Dalles, which covered the entire area, but it doesn't appear to be in the limelight now, if it's functioning at all. I'm going to do a little digging about that & will post my findings to the list. Interestingly, I need to get ahold of someone who holds the genealogy society's information that was gathered with regard to a great uncle of mine who was a stage coach driver back then. They did some type of article on him several years ago, and I need to get a copy of it. Here's a URL that is handy to have for some of these purposes. It lists all the historical and genealogy societies that are currently known by Rootsweb/Genweb. This is the listing for those in Oregon, whether they have a website or not. http://www.rootsweb.com/~orgenweb/link.html Cheri thelittlewonder@earthlink.net -- 'Genies' are here---> http://www.historysavers.com/

    3. My grandfather, Samuel Rufus Cox, was a driver on the Shaniko-Antelope-Mitchell Freight line when he and my grandmother, Bessie Sherry, were married on 7 August 1904, at the home of her mother (Mary Ellen Hughes) and step-father (Allen Grant) at Antelope, Oregon. I visited Antelope this past September and presume there is no historical group there. Where can I find information on the freight line(s) of this era? Thanking you in advance. 3. This "Welcome Message" addendum is being sent to all current subscribers to both the List and Digest. I am sending *only* the addendum to the list, rather than to send the entire "Welcome Message," since the first part of the Welcome Message varies according to whether you are subscribed in "Mail" or "Digest" mode and it only addresses the commands that need to be sent to the server for various subscription options. The addendum, as you can see, contains only the "Rules of the Road." Thanks for reading... Cheri ********************************************** COMMON-SENSE RULES OF THE ROAD FOR ORWasco-L and ORWasco-D: 1. There will be absolutely NO FLAMING or bickering on this list! There are no exceptions to this rule, and no warnings issued. Offenders will be cheerfully removed on the FIRST offense. This is a place where we can go for help, answers to questions, and sharing of resources about Wasco County. That can't happen if people are afraid to post because they might be "flamed" for speaking up. 2. Rootsweb has a policy against SPAM, but it is left to each list administrator to define that sometimes fine line between what is a mutually-beneficial posting of information and what is outright SPAM. It is my feeling that if it is genealogy-related and is tactfully submitted on occasion to ORWasco as an informational item, it is okay to post. "On occasion" means that it is not posted at regular intervals on the calendar or by a "bot" of any sort. It must directly apply to genealogy, although it doesn't *have* to apply *directly* to Wasco County (that would be preferable, however). By "tactfully submitted" I mean that NO PRICES are posted to the list. A description of materials can be listed, along with an email address and/or a URL. Any questions about specific content or prices should take place OFF LIST, through private email. If any significant money is made from any such situation, I hope the person who benefits will make a donation to Rootsweb for, say, 5-10 percent of the profits. 3. In spite of these loose provisions for posting info that might cause a subscriber to make some money from an item that will clearly benefit genealogy efforts of subscribers, this list is NOT to be a venue for anyone's profit-making ventures. If my policies about SPAM are abused at all, the offender will be removed from the list without an opportunity to re-subscribe. Abuse includes any situation in which I discover or strongly suspect that subscriber email addresses have been plucked from this list and used as a mailing list for any commercial venture. 4. Please do not post chain letters, "forwarded" emails that have been to a million people & promise to save the world or some such thing, and don't post poetry or virus warnings either. If an item falls into this category but you feel strongly that it should be posted to the list, please send it directly to me at my personal email address, and I will send it on to the list if I feel it is appropriate. 5. I consider this the most important rule of all. We are here to have *fun* and enjoy the comradrie of sharing our research with eachother. Newbies and professionals alike are welcome on this list. Let's help eachother, be friendly, and try to accomodate the varying personalities that will subscribe here over the months and years to come. That is, after all, what these lists, and Rootsweb, are all about. Please feel free to email me with any questions and comments, or if you have problems at any time with list subscription commands. 1. [ORWASCO] New List Administrator
    2. Cheri Dohnal, EA
    3. Hello, everybody. I know you're all out there, even though you don't say much, because I have a list of all the subscribers. That's why I'm writing to you all today... I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Cheri Dohnal, the new Wasco County list administrator. I'll be posting my surnames & interests shortly, in a separate email, but this posting and the next are strictly to address List business that pertains to having a new list administrator. I have revised the "Welcome Messages" for both the list and the digest version of ORWasco, and I thought it would be a good idea to post that message to the list for those of you who subscribed before I took the helm. The Welcome Message addendum outlines the "Rules of the Road" for both lists, according to the "listowner's" preferences and Rootsweb policy. Please take the time to read these common-sense rules so that you know what to expect. We're currently a small group with few postings, but I expect that to change very soon, so it is a good idea to make sure things get off to a good start. Without further delay, then, I will send the new Welcome Message immediately following this one. Welcome aboard, belatedly, to all of you on the list. Let's have some fun with this! Cheri
