James Alexander HURST married Malinda May DAVIS 16 Nov 1850 and the couple headed for Oregon the following spring. He was 19 years old and she only 16, and their first child arrived less than two months after they reached Oregon soil. They first settled in Linn Co., presumably to be with other family there, but ventured eastward to Wasco Co in the late 1850s. Their final settlement was in the Tygh Ridge area, south of The Dalles. James & Malinda had 14 children, most of whom stayed in Wasco Co. That resulted in many collateral lines for our family in the next generations. Surnames closely related to our Hursts that are known to be in Oregon include: Cowsert, Patterson, Gray, Love, Bowles, Brown, Peck, Reynolds, Zumwalt and Dickens. My line descends from their daughter Susan, who married James Gray. I will give details about that line in the next post. There is much we still don't know about why our ancestors made some of the choices they did, such as settling first in Linn County but moving eastward again when they had proved up on their Linn Co Donation Land Claim. We have strong reason to believe other family migrated westward with them in 1851, but thus far have not found the families for sure. Families with whom they had close bonds in Missouri included the following, in addition to others who shared the Hurst amd Davis surnames. If anyone is related to families by these surnames in either Linn or Wasco Co's, we'd love to hear from you and are happy to share all info we have on the earlier generations plus our own line: Tripp, Scribner, West, Coulter, Todd, Whitlock, Estes, amd Farmer, to name a few. Clues, help, or hints all are appreciated! -- Cheri puny@mail.com --->>>^<<<--- Wasco Co., OR GenWeb site--> http://www.historysavers.com/orwasco/
Brothers Samuel COX and CorNEALius COX came to the Mitchell area of about 1898 from Tennessee via the railroad to Oregon. Samuel COX is listed in the 1900 Census of Wheeler County, OR, Bridge Creek Pct as being born April 1878, single, Tennessee, shepard. Samuel was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee to Elizabeth CHRISTIAN and Emanuel COX. Samuel married 07 Aug 1904 to Bessie SHERRY at the home of Allen GRANT and Mary Ellen HUGHES SHERRY GRANT at Antelope, Wasco County, Oregon. Bessie SHERRY was born on 03 March 1887 at Antelope, Wasco County, OR the third child of Mary Ellen HUGHES and Herbert SHERRY. In September of 1887 Herbert SHERRY was shot in a bar room brawl in Antelope by Jack Thompson. Jack Thompson had earlier killed Henry Harvey, the murderer of Roderick GRANT (brother of Allen GRANT). Samuel COX was a sheep herder and later a freight driver on the Shaniko-Antelope-Mitchell freight line. Bessie SHERRY was working as a waitress at the Antelope Hotel when she met Samuel COX. Herbert SHERRY is buried up on the hill in the OLD CEMETERY out of Antelope. There are twin daughters of Samuel and Bessie COX buried in the NEW Cemetery at Antelope. I visited these grave sites this past September. Does anyone have a picture that they could share of the Antelope Hotel? Does anyone have a history or stories they could share of the freight line between Shaniko, Antelope, and Mitchell, Oregon? Is there someone that I could contact about having a family reunion/work party at the two Antelope cemeteries? Hi folks, We've been gathering new members lately like I can't believe, so I thought maybe we ought to try re-introducing ourselves and doing a little Roll Call type of thing. The list is still small enough that a Roll Call won't be too burdensome, and I think it might help us all to see who is researching whom from which area. Wasco county is a pretty big county geographically, so it wouldn't hurt to give some general idea of where the location really is that you're referring to. Also, many of the towns that were there 100 years ago are no longer thriving towns, so some don't even show on the map. Now, I want you to know that I'm not exaggerating when I say the list has really grown. Just to give you an idea of how much it has grown, let me say that it has more than tripled in size in the past two months. Yup, that's right -- tripled! I'm so pleased that folks are finding the list now. I can honestly say that now the list has finally reached the size that will make it easier for us to help eachother -- which is what we're here for, right? And the site is growing, getting LOTS of traffic now, especially compared to what I had expected, and we're working feverishly to get more data online. I'm staring right now at a huge stack of goodies that I'm getting transcribed for the site. It's GREAT! If any of you have any photos of family members, homesteads in Wasco County, or even real general stuff (an old building that you don't know the exact location of, or ??), please consider letting me get it scanned & up on the web. I'm also working on some great photo pages for the site right now. I think you'll enjoy them. And please, if you have obituaries, stories or anything like that about your Wasco Co ancestors, let me know if you'd be willing to share them on the website. The more stuff we post, the more we help others and we also help our own causes in the process. Anybody out there ready to help with transcribing (typing) stuff for the site? Any volunteers out there to help with some tombston reading when the weather is warmer? Let me know! If not, that's okay too, but we sure could use your contributions to the data we're accumulating. If you could just dig out an old obituary or three from your files on Wasco Co ancestors, that would be fantastic! :-) I'll post my ancestor info for the Roll Call in my next email. This one is just "official business." Take care, all... -- Cheri puny@mail.com --->>>^<<<--- Wasco Co., OR GenWeb site--> http://www.historysavers.com/orwasco/

Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu, When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too. I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin When he smiled I realized I'd passed it on to him . I thought about that smile then I realized its worth, A single smile, just like mine could travel round the earth. So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected Let's start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected! Keep the smile going by sending this on to a friend. Everyone needs a smile!!! Hi, I hope someone can help me. I need any information on how I can contact Zelma Strickler, if still living, or her relatives. She was married to John William(JACK) Strickler and they lived in the Dalles area in the mid-fifties.He worked on the damm. Jack(my grandfather) was killed in a cattle-truck/auto accident on 8/7/1956, 1 year before I was born. In the newspaper reports is written "surviving him are his widow,Zelma, the Dalles; son, Otis; daughter, Mrs. Alice Muller, of Rowena.". Otis was probally a step-son and may or may-not have had Strickler as his last name. If you have ANY information on them or remember this accident( a cattle truck carrying 45 cattle crushed a auto at the Dalles bridge killing 2 people) please contact me. Thank you. Hello all, I've recently been uploading quite a bit of new stuff to the Wasco Co. site, and there is more to come. Most recently (yesterday) I reformatted and made some corrections to some of the cemetery listings that were at the old Wasco Co. GenWeb site, and uploaded them to our new site. I also moved all the old surname listings to the new site and posted the queries that have been submitted so far at the new site (the old GenWeb page didn't host its own query page -- only a surname listing). I'm currently preparing some new cemetery listings to add to the old ones, and have some great photos that will soon be uploaded as well, so be sure to keep checking back on a regular basis. For those of you who don't yet know it, our "little" site is now the official Oregon GenWeb site for Wasco County. I am the new County Coordinator, effective earlier this month. There is a query page and I will be posting a surname page that links with the queries. Please post your queries at the site, and tell fellow researchers about the site! We've had a surprising number of visitors to this site since its inception, and we're getting new list subscribers all the time. It appears that there is a great deal of interest in Wasco County, and there is definitely a lot of data available to us as well, so I plan to make good use of all that. I already have received a volunteer offer from one great gal who is going to help me get some stuff transcribed & ready for the web. There is plenty of work to go around if any of the rest of you want to volunteer for transcription, walking cemeteries to read the headstones, cleaning up the cemeteries, gathering data that can be transcribed by someone else, or whatever. If you have materials about Wasco County within your own family history files, I would love to have copies of it to share on the website. You will, of course, be credited with the contributions. Even if you can't afford the time to transcribe or whatever, please contribute what you have. I'll see that it gets transcribed & formatted for the web. I hope you'll all enjoy the site as it continues to grow. I'm having a great time getting it built...except for the dad-gum search box, which I still can't get to index the site properly. :-) -- Cheri puny@mail.com --->>>^<<<--- Wasco Co., OR GenWeb site--> http://www.historysavers.com/orwasco/

Oops! I just discovered that, for some reason, the search feature isn't currently working -- so don't trust it yet. I'll let you know when that situation is fixed... -- Cheri puny@mail.com --->>>^<<<--- Freebies for Gen. Addicts---> http://www.historysavers.com/
Hey, out there! A couple of situations have arisen that I thought it might be good to cover (briefly, I promise) in a post to the list. Please read on... First, if any of you may have attempted to email me in the past couple of weeks and received a bounce from my server, I apologize profusely. I really was here, but my server's brain was impaired. This was just your standard, run-of-the-mill server problem & nothing more, but for some reason it took several days for it to become apparent. Thus it took several days before it was fixed. As near as we can tell at this time, everything is back in working order. Again, I apologize if you received a bounce notice. Rest assured, I will never just disappear. If it seems that I do, it is merely an email glitch. Next issue is our new website. If you have taken the time during this busy holiday season to have a quick visit, thank you. You may have noticed that my original projections for getting things posted were, shall we say, a bit hasty. A couple of things have taken place on the home front here that have made it difficult to find time for transcribing and uploading data. My daughter's surgery was much more extensive than we had originally thought, and the associated doctor visits etc have taken quite a chunk out of my time, but I'm making headway again. Ta Dahhh.... We now have a full-fledged site up & running. I've found a few buggy places that I need to tweak & will be fixing those as soon as I can, but most things are working. Please do go give it a look in the next few days and let me know what other ideas you might have. I have some other "Stuff" to post to the site as I get a chance to format it, so don't despair if you don't find what you want just yet. Once the initial site setup has been taken care of, I will start posting a notice to the list whenever we add new goodies to the site. I can say this much: I know that some of the surnames the listmembers are searching already have data posted at the site. So go give it a look! There is a Search utility on the main page which will allow you to search the entire site, and there will soon be a master archive listing on-site as well. I think (at least I *hope*) that when you see what types of things I have uploaded to the site, you will realize how many things you have in your own files that would be worth posting there for the benefit of others. I have some larger-scale projects in the works that will take a while to complete before posting, but most of what is there is either my own compilation of the many documents I've learned from along the way, or it is simply a transcription of a document from my own files (biographies, obits, etc.). There are probably several things in your own files in this last category that would be terrific to be able to post at our site. It would involve little effort on your part -- I can even transcribe them if you don't feel you have the time -- and it would help our site tremendously. I hope you'll consider contributing to our archives. The more information we have at our site, the more people it will attract. The more people we attract to the site, the more people will join this list. As our numbers on this list grow, so will our knowledge of our ancestors. Oh, and don't forget to check out the "links" page at the site. Here's the URL, in case you didn't get it bookmarked when I posted it previously: http://www.historysavers.com/orwasco/ Thanks for reading, and happy holidays to all of you... -- Cheri puny@mail.com --->>>^<<<--- Freebies for Gen.
