Looks like I left another one off my list of "vital links to have" -- the Books We Own site. Great site, and it's now housed at Rootsweb. This site has been around for a long time, on a private server, and you'll see why it's so valuable if you visit it once. I consider it to be "THE" lookup service when I need a specific lookup, although I always check the GenWeb site for that area as well, to see if anyone has posted their willingness to do a lookup in a book about that area. This site has lookups offered for books that cover locations all over the world. Check it out! http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/index.html I also want to apologize for "fibbing" to you last week. If you've been to *our* website this week, you may have noticed that I haven't yet gotten all the promised items posted there. I'm working on it. Unfortunately, both last week & this one seem to be filling up worse & worse with unexpected *urgent* items, so I'm having a time of it. Please be patient. LL Gilson; No, we are not related to the Guys of The Dalles, OR. GUY is my husband's name; and his family of GUY came from England>upstate NY>Spring Valley, Mower, Co., MN. The GUY name originated in Normandy (of France) name. There is quite a colony of GUYs, from early days, in St. Mary's County, MD and from a brochure, I picked up there, it seems that some migrated to KY (the bourbon country). If you want the name of the St. May's County, MD genealogy society, write to me personally. (We do have one GUY, our son, living there.) My mother's 2nd marriage was to a Perry of Hood River, OR; and this family has Leabo connections. About a year ago, I responded to a query, which included Leabo, on the Wasco Co. Board of GenConnect. Perhaps there are archived copies of earlier queries. Hi : I forwarded the Melvin DAVIDSON's Obit to the President of the Columbia Gorge Genealical Socity, (c/o The Dalles Public Libray, The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon.) Some of the LEABO family members were in my class at The Dalles High School.. Zona Leabo was in my Roll Room. And now, come to think of it, one of my Gardner cousins from Dufur married a Leabo. Hi: Ron Stone: I didn't know your people although I do know Wolf Run as my Aunt Clara Moore m. T. Wilson lived up there and my Uncle Grover C. Moore had an apple orchard there. My parents were wheat ranchers at Nansene (of Tygh Ridge) and are buried IOOF-The Dalles.. Very recently, The Columbia Gorge Genealical Society at The Dalles Library have sent me a list of my MOORE family graves in the IOOF-Dufur Cemetery - but no one has been able to take the trip to find them. This group of Moores are family members:. Elvira Moore, widow of Hiram Moore W.H (typed as W.R.) Moore and Almira J. Moore (wife) Hiram E. Moore and Hattie Moore (wife) We also have there James W. Moore and wife, Orrie E. Moore, who are my Grandparents - 5 years ago while in OR, I actually found them at IOOF-Dufur (I had been there before). Another is Polk Butler and wife, Delphine Butler (I found these Butlers names as they are Online at IOOF-Dufur, Wasco Co. Cemetery List. on ORGenWeb for Wasco County website.) James W. Moore and Delphine (McCoy) Butler, both born IN, are first cousins for Delphine's mother is a sister of the above listed Elvira Moore, nee MENDENHALL, our Oregon Pioneer Grandmother (my g-grandmother.). Sharon: I have viewed your website and know that there is little that I can suggest that will yield the information, which you seek. I was in school in the 1930s with SLUSHERs and also with DUFUR descendents, who resided in Dufur, Wasco County, Oregon. My MOOREs appeared in the Fifteen Mile, Wasco County, OR 1880 US Census for they migrated to Oregon 1877 -- so the same Timeline as your Toupin and Staats.. Another great site suggestion: U.S. Department of the Interior - Bureau Of Land Management The Official Federal Land Patent Records Site http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ You can get the best results with wildcard searches if you have lots of name spelling variations. such as Dunl% for Dunlavey, Dunlevy, Dunleavy etc. You can make print out copies of many of the original land patents or send for them.
I've been slowly researching (spare time) the families of Angelique Longtain and Francois Toupin. Both families Hudson's Bay employees. Angelique, son Jean Baptiste "James" Toupin and daughter Marie Toupin Staats settled at Dufur, (15 Mile) before 1880 and after 1871. Marie Staats and husband John and a daughter Lucy are buried at St. Peter's Cemetery, The Dalles, OR. William Staats married Arabelle Dufur Slusher in 1899. Several children of both of these Toupin decendants should be around The Dalles and Dufur and maybe Yakima. Hi ORWASCO List Subscribers: I will introduce myself -- Violet (MOORE) GUY of the Oregon Pioneer Family of the Dufur MOOREs, who migrated from Iowa in 1877 and homesteaded at Nansene (on Tygh Ridge), Wasco County, Oregon. Our Pioneer Grandmother (my g-grandmother) is Elvira (MENDENHALL) MOORE (1824-1899), widow of Rev. Hiram C. MOORE (1819-1869), and daughter of Himelius & Priscilla (COFFIN) MENDENHALL, NC>IN. The MENDHALLs came from England to Chester County, PA in 1682 under Land Grants of William Penn -- Quakers. The COFFINs came from England to Massachusetts in 1642 and are among the original families purchasing Nantucket Island, MA from the Indians -- also Quakers.. I started genealogy studies in early May 1998, joined by a Moore cousin, a Butler cousin and my son; and we have done extensive research on these families as well as the MOORE ancestors. The BUTLERs, with some also settling at Nansene, were very early Oregon Pioneers (1852, 1853, etc.); and while I am not a descendent, we are related. We do need more genealogical help on the ancestors of Hiram Moore, born 1819 in OH>IN>IA to William MOORE. My Grandfather, James W. Moore, with wife, Orrie Emily (GREENE) MOORE and infant son, Orrin W. MOORE (my father) migrated from Harrison County, Co., Iowa in 1877 via RR to California then up into "the Valley", OR by wagons, settling on the land, which is still within the family -- a grandson of James' daughter, Dora (MOORE) UNDERHILL. My grandmother, Orrie E. (Greene) Moore's ancestors are GALLUP-GREENE-DOW of New London & Windham Counties, Connecticut. Three more of Elvira (Mendenhall) Moore's son, who migrated with their families to Oregon were William Himelius, Harrison "Phillip" and Hiram "Embree". (I put the names known by between quotes.) I grew-up on Elvira's land and have been gone from Oregon since just after WWII. In Fall 1999, I joined the Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society, which is located tin The Dalles/Wasco Co. Library. I have lots of URLS, which I will share with you. Here is the E-mail address for the Oregon Archives, References: ARCHIVES Reference <Reference.Archives@state.or.us> Researching in Wasco County, Oregon:: Moore, Mendenhall, Coffin, Butler, Gallup. Just to give you an idea of what is out there, in case you haven't found some of these things yet... If what you need isn't in the list below, by all means try one of these other sites that offer free lookups. Here's what we offer through our little group, followed by a list of the "mega lookup sites" that I'm aware of on the internet right now. Besides these, there are tons of county-specific indexes all over the 'net, and don't forget the Tombstone Transcription Project or the Census Project done by Rootsweb & GenWeb -- see each state site for the cemetery listings links. I plan to post the following lookup offers at the Wasco Co. site as well. All of the sites in the list below offer *free* lookups and other *free* services, such as taking photos of headstones or other such things. First, what we have at www.historysavers.com -- just email me directly for these lookups: MARRIAGE INDEXES: Illinois and Indiana, between about 1790 and 1850 Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, about 1728-1850 Ohio and parts of IL, IN, KY and TN from 1720-1926 Missouri 1800-1850 Missouri 1851-1900 Iowa and Pennsylvania -- I don't know yet which years for these Selected surnames -- marriages posted at the historysavers.com site ("genealogy helps" link) for the following surnames in most of the midwestern and eastern states: Scribner/Scrivner, Tripp, and Hurst DAVIS marriages, 1800-1850 (a few earlier) for most of the midwestern and eastern states. OTHER STUFF: Selected genealogical records on pioneer families of Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Ilinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Lookups in the book, "We All Go Home In The Spring" -- a great book of true accounts of Oregon Trail pioneers 1810, 1818 and 1820 IL census -- some indexes, some years are actual census pages 1820 Indiana census index =================================== THINGS YOU CAN FIND ONLINE =================================== FREE, DOWNLOADABLE BOOKS online, all topics (tons of great history books in there!) This list has been far too quiet lately, so I thought maybe I ought to wake you all up & get you ready to do some genealogy! :-) It seems a bit odd that the list has fallen so silent, since we've actually gained several new members again in recent history. Now our numbers have approximately *quadrupled* since the beginning of December, so it's definitely worthwhile to post your ancestor information or questions to the list. Plenty of people here to answer your queries now...How about we finish that "Roll Call" that we started recently? Only a few of us posted... I also wanted to let you all know about some new stuff that we have. I should be posting the newest queries this weekend, and hopefully another cemetery or three. But besides that, I'm going to make an announcement for free lookups to be done by those of us who are involved in History Savers. We have a pretty good assortment of marriage indexes, census indexes for a couple of states, and fairly broad range of miscellaneous books that cover ancestors in several states. Although some of these resources don't have anything directly to do with Wasco County, our ancestors all came here from somewhere else, so I thought maybe you guys would like to have the first shot at some lookups. I'll list in a separate email what we know so far that we have, and I'll add a few things to that list sometime next week at the History Savers' site (use the link for "genealogy helpers"). Please limit yourselves to 3 lookup requests at a time, so we can keep up with the influx of requests. Last, but certainly not least, I wanted to give you a heads-up on a publication soon to happen, which may very well contain information about some of your families. Furthermore, if you have something to contribute to it, now is the time. Albert Belanger is putting together a wonderful resource that will give information about all known pioneers who came over the Oregon Trail in 1851. That just happens to be the year that my family came over. You may not be aware that many of the families that settled in Wasco County in the late 1850s and through the 60s actually arrived in a much earlier year but had to settle in one of the communities near the coast, because lands weren't yet opened up in Wasco County. The government did not offer any lands in Wasco County until the late 50s because Wasco Co. wasn't adequately protected yet from Indian attack, and the 50s were some of the worst years for that problem. Therefore, the only pioneers who lived in Wasco Co as early as 1851 were either government agents, enterprising fur traders, or "squatters" who would have to wait to gain title to any land they might be squatting upon. Watch for the next email... -- Cheri puny@mail.com --->>>^<<<--- Wasco Co., OR GenWeb site--> http://www.historysavers.com/orwasco/
