    3. All of this sharing of resources has been wonderful. Thank you all for opening those resources up to all of us. I'll post my very short list later this weekend, but most of what I have is being transcribed for the website. I do have a couple of copyrighted items that are limited to lookups, though. Those of you who have offered to do lookups for the list: please contact me directly (off-list) to let me know if you would be willing to have your name & resources listed at the Wasco Co. GenWeb site for lookups. That would be wonderful. Earline beat me to the punchline by just a nose, with her posting about the Columbia Gorge Genealogy Society. However, since she did leave out one of the most important aspects, I still want to add to her post. :-) The Society's dues are very, very reasonable, and your contributions to CGGS will help to further the cause of genealogical research in Wasco County by providing funding for their special projects, such as materials purchases for their library, cemetery cleanup & recording possibilities, reprinting of books that are of historical value to Wasco County, and availability of general research materials for all of us. Please support the CGGS -- I am going to be writing out a check for that purpose when I pay bills tomorrow, so this seemed like a good time to remind all of you. The Society is a great group of people, some of whom have been extremely helpful to me and to our website (right, Earline?). Please give them your support. 1. [ORWASCO] L. Barnum, Banker
    2. Chris Havnar
    3. Dear List, Again from the yellowed pile of papers, but I don't find this name in the "family" genealogy - perhaps it might be of interest to someone else. But then why was it so lovingly saved ?? The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, October 25, 1927 Sketch with the caption - Bank on Him and with Him - Behind the Crops L. Barum is a native of Wasco county for he was born in 1877, when the "largest county in the world," as it was called, comprised in its area what is now Sherman county. When about 16, he took part in the Moro rodeo, wearing chaps and riding wild steers just to help the fair along. Several of the boys saw a group of Gypsies and had their fortunes told, he among them. And right then, "Drew" learned he was not destined for the life of a cowboy, but of a banker. However, in 1897 he entered the employ of the Moro Mercantile company. In 1900 his marriage to a Moro girl, Miss Kay Koonsman, took place. Mr. Barnum at this time was connected with the Wasco Warehouse Milling company at Moro. In 1903 he became a banker, seeking his fundamental knowledge in the banks of Moro, Shaniko and Wasco. He is now vice-president and general manager of the First National Bank of this city, comming to The Dalles in 1919. Mr. Barnum has always been interested in farming and livestock, which aids him in his capacity as banker in a city which still retains its early name of "Gateway to an Empire". While at Moro he served as city councilman, member of the school board, and mayor. He was district trustee for two terms of the local Kiwanis and served four years as president of The Dalles-Wasco Chamber of Commerce. In return I ask that you enter your WASCO county obituaries into GEN CONNECT obits for WASCO county located at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Or/WascoObits I've entered the obits from hubby's family that I have there. OK - I'm selfish - I am a Californian attempting to research hubbies Oregon family - and it turns out some of my real "finds" were in this house all the time - but it difficult sometimes to go through the stuff from an estate - it does take the passage of a certain number of years. 3. >From A Brief History of the Old Wasco County, Oregon Pioneers Association by William Howard McNeal published 1975 pg 162: Circuit Court Judges of Wasco County At the May 3, 1928 session of the Wasco County Pioneers Association, B.S. Huntington, Attorney of The Dalles and Spikane, gave the following short historical account of the Circuit Court of Wasco County: The first session being held August 14, 1854 and precided over by Judge Nathan Olney, first merchant of The Dalles 1848, whose term expired in 1861. ....... And from the first message/reference - I was real confused about the arrow- this makes more sense to me ..... pg 92: Olney Nathan (1825-1866) First Dalles Merchant of 1848 was a native of Penn. When he returned from service in the Cayuse Indian War of 1847-1848 in the Walla Walla Campaign, following the Whitman Massacre by the Cayuse Indians, he built a log cabin at 103 W 2nd on the banks of Mill Creek in which he lived with his Indian wife Annette (B. 1838 at The Dalles) and had a small store trading with the Indians and the emigrants as the first Merchant of The Dalles. In 1849 when Col W.W. Loring arrived with the 4th U.S. Infantry he made a Military Reservation of 10 square miles for Fort Dalles, forcing Olney to move to Chenowith Creek where he built his 2nd log store and dwelling about where old Hwgy. 30 bridge is located in the Westgate area, where he once again traded with the Indians, emigrants and Ft. Dalles soldiers. In 1851 the Military Reservation was reduced to One Square Mile, permitting boats to land at The Dalles where civilians could work the boats, live and build a community. Olney was a Veteran of the Yakima Indian War of 1855-56 and an interpeter in the Coat <sic> Indian uprisings of 1861-62 which made him a Civil War Veteran also. Following that service he took his wife and sons Frank & Melvina (B. 1856) and son Wm. (B. 1858) to the Yakima Indian Reservation where he was entitled to a rich Toppnish stock claim. One day his horse stepped in a badger hole throwing him off onto his head driving an old Indian arrow into his brain. He was buried at Ft. Simcoe, Wn. and his family remained on the Yakima Indian Reservation. He played the violin. ---W.H.
