Athena Cemetery, Umatilla County, Oregon. SCOTLAND: John Morrison, son of John and Elizabeth, married Grace Elizabeth Reid in Scotland, 18 November 1853, probably at Crosshill, Old Monkland, where their minister, Matthew Graham, was located. Grace was a first cousin to Daniel McLachlan of Old Monkland Parish. John was a Presbyterian and a contractor and builder in Glasgow. Family tradition has it that he built a large breakwater or dike or large structure in Glasgow harbor about 1859 and it failed, flooding land and city, and ruined his reputation as a contractor. Another version is that he invested in a company that failed. His brother Mathie Morrison was a sailor and urged him to go to New Zealand, describing the beauty of New Zealand and the Pacific Northwest. Gold was discovered in New Zealand about this time. NEW ZEALAND: One family story is that he was sent out / went out to New Zealand as a road inspector for new paving. At any rate, he took his wife and four living children to Fairfield, Otago, South Island, New Zealand. The date is unclear -- 1858, 1859. OREGON: John and Grace (Reid) Morrison left New Zealand 9 February 1876 from Auckland on the North Island, stopped at Fiji and Hawaii on the way, and arrived in San Francisco 9 March 1876. From there they sailed up the Pacific coast on the ORAFLAMME, then up the Columbia River to Wallula, Washington by steam boat. From there they proceeded to Walla Walla, Washington where they bought wagons and supplies for the trip to Adams, in Umatilla County, Oregon, where they arrived by the 20-24th of March with eight children. They homesteaded 160 acres one-half mile west of Adams. John was 49; Grace was 41. 1880 US Census, Greasewood Precinct, Umatilla County, Oregon #67-67: John Morrison, 52, farmer, born Scotland to Scottish-born parents Grace R. This family, above, is the one that welcomed Daniel McLachlan to Oregon when he arrived with his family. They spent the winter with the Morrisons before locating on a farm in the Monkland district east of Moro in Sherman County, Oregon. ----------- Descendants of John and Grace (Reid) Morrison of Umatilla County have generously supported the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon over many years: Pioneer Trails, Umatilla County, Oregon, vol. 6 #1: Pendleton Round-Up Courts: ------- Virginia "Ginny" ----------- (who married John F. Athena Cemetery, Umatilla County, Oregon: MORRISON Father 1827-1903 Mother 1833-1899 Gibson M. 1870-1941 Ada M. 1875-1935. The Adams Advance, Friday, February 13, 1903: "JOHN MORRISON. Another Pioneer Gone and the Country Mourns His Loss. "Died, at his home one-half mile northwest of Adams, Sunday, February 8, at 9:30 p.m., John Morrison, aged 75 years. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, November 18, 1827. He lived there until 1859, when he moved with his family to New Zealand. Then in 1876 he again moved with his family to Umatilla county, where he settled on the farm which has been his home ever since. Deceased leaves give sons, John, living in British Columbia; William, of Sherman county; Richard, Athena; Robert and Gibson, Adams; and two daughters, Mrs. J.O. Hales and Miss Eliza, of Adams, to mourn the loss of a kind, indulgent and loving father. All the children were present at the funeral except John. Oneof the largest concourses of people ever known in this country attended the interment. Out of respect for his memory and what he had done toward the advancement of education in this community, the public school closed and the scholars attended the funeral services en masse to do honor to the deceased pio! neer. " The community feels the loss of an upright and enterprising citizen. While he never received any political preferment, he was always found taking an active interest in all that he believed to be for the best interest of the community, county, state and nation. He was without an enemy and all were his friends. To know that any were in need was to him a command to render assistance. "His death was due to a complication of causes. Having always lived an active life, the greater part of which has been passed on the frontier, no doubt the exposure incident to such a life tended to shorten it. The funeral services were held at the residence at 10:30 Tuesday morning, after which the remains were interred in the Athena cemetery." In a column entitled TOWN TOPICS were these tidbits: ---"William Morrison, of Sherman County, is in the city, having been called up to this part of the country by the serious illness and death of his father, John Morrison. He expects to leave for his home the latter part of this week." ---"Daniel McLachlan, of Monkland, (Sherman County, Oregon) came up last Friday to attend the funeral of his uncle, the late John Morrison. He left for home Tuesday." ---"The public school was dismissed in token of the esteem in which the late John Morrison was held in this vicinity." ---"William Morrison spent Wednesday visiting friends and relatives in Athena." ---"Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Hales visited in Pendleton Wednesday." --- From a copy of a newspaper clipping, a gift from Bob and Joyce Hales of Adams, Oregon 1982.
