According to records, on 26 Oct 1884 John L. Smith married Nanie J. Harper in Union Co., and I believe this is "my" John Lewis Smith and that Nanie probably is Nancy J. Harper, daughter of Nicholas Harper who lived in the Pendleton area. I've found John, his wife "Nanna," and five children (Jesse, Bernice, Roy, Bessie, and Earl) in the 1900 federal census that covers Athena. Following John's death his father wrote to another relative that " . . . he [John] left a wife and six children, the youngest a boy of 10 years," so there seems to be a child missing here . . . either born after the 1900 census or possibly an older child living away from home. Presuming Nanna would remarry following John's death, I searched for a marriage and came up with Nannie Smith marrying Charles W. Geisler 13 Jul 1909 in Umatilla Co. I was hoping the 1910 census would show the name of the missing child from Nanna's first marriage, especially if it were the youngest, but so far I've not been able to turn up a 1910 census record for Charles and Nannie.
