    1. Re: [ORUMATIL] Athena Cemetery
    2. Dear Beth, I'm really not certain that Charles Smith is buried in Athena Cemetery, but it is my best guess. He purchased a plot there in 1897 (probably to bury very young children) when he was still farming his homestead outside of Weston. In 1903 he moved into Weston with his wife and four remaining children, but disappeared from the tax rolls in 1914 and the property was sold for nonpayment of taxes in 1918. I am now assuming that he became too ill to work around 1914 and when he died in 1916 there was certainly no money for a cemetery plot, let alone a headstone. Make any sense? I do have a James Smith who lived in Walla Walla Co., but as far as I can tell he never married. Charles, his nephew, worked his farm with him as a young man until about 1880, but I lost track of him after that. He was a native of England, born about 1832, and I haven't had the nerve yet to start chasing the Smith Family in the UK. Doesn't seem to be any connection, that would be too simple! Good luck in your Smith search, Ruth
