Washut Indian Service was at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 at the long House in Mission. Funeral was Monday, Jan. 28 at the Longhouse with burial at the Agency Cemetery. Mr. Burke was born June 25, 1930 at Cayuse, the son of Richard James and Elizabeth (Woods) Burke, and grandson of Chief Poker Jim. He attended schools at St. Andrews Mission, Cayuse, and was graduated from Chemawa Indian School, Salem. He had lived in Umatilla County all his life and at Athena for 22 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the Army. Mr. Burke was a member of the American Legion, Professional Rodeo Association, American Quarter Horse Association and active in Tribal Affairs. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Burke, Athena; daughters, Rebecca Lynn Burke, Julie Ann Burke and Michelle Burke, all of Athena; Elizabeth Ann Burke, Mission, and Kelly Lee Burke, Portland; A son Richard Dean Burke, Athena; sisters, Ernestine Waters, Mission and Videll Bronson, Cayuse; and one grandchild. His father Richard Burke, died in 1980 and his uncle, Robert Burke, in 1982. Burns Mortuary, Pendleton, is in charge of arrangements.
