    3. Good Morning, All -- I have a slip of paper on which is written, "May 8, 1864 This certifies that James Smith and Jane R Smith is acceptable members of the Christian Union Church on Plainville [sic] Circuit Iowa. K. D. Wolf Pastor." To me this would serve as a recommendation from the church in Iowa to a church in Oregon after the family's arrival and pretty well dates when they began their trip to Oregon. The family settled in Summerville, Union Co., OR following their arrival. My next record of them is a Union Co. tax receipt in 1865. The year of travel is confirmed in the "Registration Book Umatilla County Pioneer Reunion 1892," which includes James' and Rebecca's son, J[ohn] L[ewis] Smith in its list of 1902 attendees. Other details given about him include born, 1855; nativity, Iowa; year emigrated, 1864; where from, Iowa; conveyance [for emigration], ox team; occupation, peace officer; address, Athena, Ore. John Lewis Smith appears to be the only male child in this family to have married and had children, but I've been unable to trace them. Any information about the family would be =very= welcome! Also, does anyone have any ideas about what train the Smiths might have traveled with? Thanks for any help! Beth Perry Johnston Newport, Oregon
