He was 95 year-old Charles Adkins who was at old Yakima City (Union Gap) in 1885 when half the business firms and homeowners migrated north to the new townsite of North Yakima..... His father, L. H. Adkins, owned a homestead in what is now downtown Yakima...Old L. H., way back when, carried the mail from The Dalles to Ellensburg via horseback. The schedule depended upon mail needing delivery and ability of man and horse to get through. In the early 1880s he moved to Yakima City and took over a hotel. He owned the first saloon in North Yakima. Charles Adkins was born at Umatilla, Ore. Feb 6 1875. Among other things he tenant farmed at North Yakima for seven years, hauled the stone blocks for the Carmichael home in Union Gap, and carried the mail (1905-1909) from Yakima City to Fort Simcoe. Following the mail contract he moved to North Yakima where he clerked in grocery stores for years, was a salesman for Gibson Packing Co. and managed Borthwicks Market for six years. When the depression hit he moved his family to a Medicine Valley hop ranch. Charlie finished out his days in a little white house across from the White Swan grade school. He kept a neat yard, liked to whistle, walked to the post office for the mail every day, took pride in voting and was usually No. 1 at the polls on election day...He was sharp of mind and physically active up to the time of his death. But as his son, Don, says: "After more than 95 years dad's heart just stopped." She never had a birth certificate. When it came time for her to file Social Security in 1944, she had to get a delayed birth certificate to show proof of age. She had her father John F. Porter, in his "90's" attest to the fact that she was born in Benton Co, OR, in 1879. Her delayed certificate stated this. In the 1880 Census, she show's as an 8 mo old child, living in Umatilla County, OR. Her mother and father were married in Umatilla Co in 1876. They were married in the home of the bride's parents, Harrison and Cynthia Hale, the bride Mary Angel had lived in Umatilla Co with her mother and step father, for almost 10 yrs. All evidence shows that their dau Iva, was born in 1879 in Umatilla Co instead of Benton Co. Her father being in his "90's" probably didn't remember where she was born, and when she asked if she was born in Benton Co, he said yes. Delayed birth certificates are legal but be sure and check out the birth place from other records. The relatives they ask to be wittnesses of the birth may not remember. Good Morning, All -- I have a slip of paper on which is written, "May 8, 1864 This certifies that James Smith and Jane R Smith is acceptable members of the Christian Union Church on Plainville [sic] Circuit Iowa. K. D. Wolf Pastor." To me this would serve as a recommendation from the church in Iowa to a church in Oregon after the family's arrival and pretty well dates when they began their trip to Oregon. The family settled in Summerville, Union Co., OR following their arrival. My next record of them is a Union Co. tax receipt in 1865. The year of travel is confirmed in the "Registration Book Umatilla County Pioneer Reunion 1892," which includes James' and Rebecca's son, J[ohn] L[ewis] Smith in its list of 1902 attendees. Other details given about him include born, 1855; nativity, Iowa; year emigrated, 1864; where from, Iowa; conveyance [for emigration], ox team; occupation, peace officer; address, Athena, Ore. John Lewis Smith appears to be the only male child in this family to have married and had children, but I've been unable to trace them. Any information about the family would be =very= welcome! Also, does anyone have any ideas about what train the Smiths might have traveled with? Thanks for any help! Beth Perry Johnston Newport, Oregon

I Copied this off of another list.. thought it was cute and wanted to share I guess that is what I play: Geneasolitaire. (I'd rather play geneaopoly!!) THE ELUSIVE ANCESTOR I went searching for an ancestor. I cannot find him still. He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will. He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences. He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. Census. He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame. And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name. His parents came from Europe. They should be upon some list of passengers to U.S.A., but somehow they got missed. And no one else in this world is searching for this man. So, I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can. I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed; but the weather took engraving, and some vandals took the rest. He died before the county clerks decided to keep records. No Family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts. To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans, Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES. by Merrell Kenworthy

Hi List St. Patrick's Day has been in the past a day for good luck and celebration for my family so I thought I would re-send my bunch of ancestors out again to see if I can hook up with any new cousins! If anyone listed is at all familiar please let me know! My g.g.g. grandfather was Terence Connor of Ireland. Terence was married to Mary Stewart and came to the U.S. in I believe1846 with their two children Thomas and Mary.Thomas married Mary E. Willard (originally from New York). Mary Willard died in the early 1870's. Thomas then married one Cecilia Dufficy. Thomas, Mary and Cecilia had the following children in Currie, Murray County and Shetek County, Minnesota, (1) Robert Owen Connor (B: Jan 21,1871) (D: 1945 in Donald, Washington) married Annie Helena Owen (B: Feb 16,1876) Portage Wisconsin and died, later in life in Florence, South Dakota). After a divorce he married one Elizabeth Bond (B:1882) (who also died in Donald, Washington) . Robert, Anna and Elizabeth had the following children, all of whom were born in Waubay, South Dakota., Patrick Connor, Michael Connor, Pearl Connor who married John Butler, later died in Pendleton, Oregon. They had two children, Patricia Butler and Iva Marie Butler, Robert Connor, Leona Myrtle Connor (B: Aug 28,1908) Leona married an Ivan (last name unknown), Lyle Robert Connor (B: Oct 23, 1896) died in Concord, California. Lyle married one Gladys Benson and had two children that I know of, Harold and Audrey Connor ( I understand that there maybe a Washington or Oregon State University connection to at least the children and possibly the parents), Mary (Mae) Elizabeth Connor (B:1897) died in Mission, B.C., Canada, Leon Wilbur Connor (B:1900) married and unknown woman and they had two children Leon Wilbur Connor (Jr.) (Died in Seattle, Wash., 1999) and Kathy Connor who married a fellow last name of Pearson, Virgil Thomas Connor (my grandfather) (B: Aug.30, 1902)and married Dru Passey and lived primarily in Alberta, Canada. Robert Owen Connor moved from South Dakota in the early 1900s and re-settled in the Bow Island/Magrath/Lethbridge areas of Alberta, Canada, however after a period of time they moved back to the U.S. and lived in Washington (Yakima Valley) and Oregon (Pendleton) State. (2) Minnie Gertrude Connor (B: Nov 10, 1872) married two people during her lifetime, one fellow, named Gustafson and the other, William Soward. The only other information known about them is that they had at least one child, Anna Marie Soward (B: Feb 23,1892) and that at one time were residents of Spokane, Washington. (3) Ella May Connor (B: Dec 27th, 1874) and died in Heppner, Oregon on Sept. 16, 1946. She married Fred William Owen (B: Mar 8, 1872) and he died in 1953 in Tacoma, Washington. I have extensive information on this family line. (4) Charles Thomas Connor (B: Apr 26th, 1878). I have no further information on him. (5) George H. Connor (B: May 11, 1880). The only other facts I know about him is that he had two children Earl Connor and Colista Connor (6) John Connor (B: Jun 6, 1884) married a woman by the first name of Julia. He had two children that I know of, Cordelia Connor an Wayne Connor (7) Nora Connor (B: May 26, 1887) and died in Pendelton, Oregon. She was known to have married Joseph Swartz and they had one child that I know of, George Swartz. Again, I hope that there is a family connection out there and Happy St. Patrick's Day to all.
