    3. UNSUBSCRIBE I am Unsubscribing from all mailing lists, for the present time. We have had a terrible Family EMERGENCY this week-end. Plus the STRESS of my pending Surgery to try and save my right leg has been scheduled for 22 JUNE 2001. I have to donate enough Units of blood, to get me through the Surgery before they will operate. If the inner compressed infection and the complete knee replacement can not be done, then the leg will be amputated. My grandmother Sedalia RUCKER Dexter had her leg amputated when a teen ager, my Uncle, when in the prime of life, lost his. They both lived GOOD lives well into their years. Our step-grandson had his amputation before 3 years of age, played football, basketball, baseball and swimming. So you can see , we are a determined bunch. You don't think that the RUCKER Blood in these veins has anything to do with that, DO YOU.!! I will still be working on my Genealogy and Family Research, just will not have time to answer so many e-mails that come with belonging to the mailing lists. If we are working on a project, please continue with me on it. I just have to cut down a little, from the present 10 to 16/18 hours per day to 6 to 8 hours per day at this time. When not at home, I will always have my notebook computer with me. Please continue to keep in touch... For those that I was to send my address, that are sending Documents and Records, I will include my Snail Mail Address following this E-Mail. The Researchers that are working now, on the Rucker Projects, I will continue Full Time with you on our work. Everything must be sent to my Private E-Mail at: [email protected] I will still be checking my E-Mail. Even while I am in the hospital, if and when I am able to. So, Please keep in touch. I know it will help to keep my mind off all my troubles and my aches and pains for the next several months. Thanks for your understanding in this most difficult time. 3. Carla, Enjoyed the article you sent about where are your family genealogy files and documentation going. One of my favorite Christmas gifts to my family is a hard copy of an update on our family history. I tell them you always get something for Christmas you don't want and here is my contribution to the cause. I do this not only to share with my family, but also to assure that I do not have the only copy. I also keep floppy discs and zip drive discs in my save deposit box of my genealogy and related stories I have typed. 3. I do not know if this will be allowed on a mailing list or not, but here goes. I just received this and does it ever hit the nail on the Head.. We have had several friends and relatives that this has happened to in the Past ten years. What a pity. One must prepare for that day. {{It must be in Writing,}} If it is not, then the family ( executor) can do what ever they want to do with it and you can do nothing to stop them. Please put it into writing as what you want done with all those little pieces of papers, the files, information on your computer and boxes of what other people call junk, etc...etc... Remember you MUST have it in writing. C & D in Oregon __ | " A GENEALOGIST'S NIGHTMARE " | | Dear Cousin ////, | In response to your letter, I am sorry to inform you that grandpa " Fred " | died some time back and the stuff you asked | about is not available. The personal property the family did not want was | old at an estate sale. All those boxes of junk | did not interest a single buyer. We were able to salvage several binders | for the kids homework after we sent all the paper | to the incinerator. The kids really complained bout having to lug all that | paper and pictures of those ugly old folks to the dumpster. | | An old family Bible from the 1840's did bring $5.00. The one from the | 1870's did not sell. There also was a bunch of | floppy disks that we were able to reformat and download some games for the | kids to play on their new playstation. | At least SOMEBODY got some good from the three generations work. | | I saw the fellow at a flea market a couple of weeks ago and he said he threw | the Bible in the trash after nobody was | interested in it. He said he got an offer for fifty cents for it, but would | rather burn it than give it away. He seemed to | be having a lot of success with some very nice Elvis paintings at his booth. | | The two aunts you asked about are also dead. They were such a delight and | could talk all day long about the things | papa had written about. I remember them saying something about some | records that were copied from two | courthouses that later burned. | | Neither ever wrote down a single thing. The letter you referred to was one | he typed up and sent to lots of folks who | wrote him. He laughed about them never getting any of his hard work as well | as his Fathers and Grandfather who was | in the Civil War. He guarded all the information carefully to the bitter | end. I wish I could remember some of the things | to help you, but I was bored to tears listening to them talk about the | family members who were in the civil war and those | silly pieces of paper he showed so proudly. I vaguely remember they had | some beeswax seals and something to do | with the land grants that were destroyed in the courthouse fires. | | I wish I could remember the story about his grandfathers evening with | Jefferson Davis when he was on the run. There | are also some very juicy stories that were handed down, but I don't remember | them very well. Another thing I remember | after he got sick was some fellow calling him and he agreed to let him come | down and copy all his material. He told him | he would call him back when he felt better. Papa mentioned something about | letting the society the man was from have | all his work SINCE NOBODY IN THE FAMILY CARED anything about a bunch of | people who had been dead for 200 years. -- Papa died the next week. -- | | I am so sorry papa and the two generations WASTED so much of their life on | such WORTHLESS HOBBIES and | hope your family will follow something more interesting. We enjoy Bingo and | bowling very much here in Pleasantville. | | I really enjoyed hearing from a long lost cousin and would like to hear back | if you find anything important. | The kids need the computer for their games and I need to go watch the " Millionaire " show. Your Cousin, //// Where is all your Research Files going? Where is all those Tombstone and Old Pictures going? What will happen to all the $$'s you spent on researching for those ARTICLES that you only have HALF finished? People that " DO NOT SHARE " deserve to have all their work destroyed when they pass on. I have had many that did not even return a reply to my queires or just plainly state " I DO NOT SHARE, " or " It has just cost me to much to get what I have." Why Not Preserve Some of Your Family History. "" SHARE IT WITH SOMEONE TODAY!!! "" It is a shame that one cannot understand that " SHARING IS CARING " ___

    3. Laura, In my great wisdom to cut down space in my reply to you over the list, I did not keep your e-mail address - Here are some great tips Maxine sent to me. Might be helpful to other members of the list, also. Notes in the book about Pilot Rock Cemetery are: This cemetery is located on East Birch Creek Road. It is about one mile from town. It is well maintained and has a custodian. The records were being kept by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Benthin when the survey was made in August 1994 by Martha Post and Karen Bopp. At Mountain Valley aka Gurdane Cemetery where my greatgrandfather, Samuel Caldwell is buried, their comments state there were a number of wooden markers that are illegible when the survey was done in September 1994 by Karen Bopp and Martha Post. One of my aunts always told me that Samuel's brother, Putnam Caldwell, was also buried at Gurdane, so I assumed his marker was not readible or had been destroyed. However, he died in the early 1900's in Umatilla County and I was able to get his probate file from the Oregon Archives on line and found his remains were shipped to Carson, Mills County, Iowa, for burial. Great site for Umatilla County Cemeteries on line is: http://www.usgennet.org/`ahorumat/cemeteries.htm Margaret Walla Walla Maxine Wilton wrote: Margaret, Did your Stanley's have property there??? If so they may have been burried on their own property. or that of a relative not having the same last name.Find out when those mentioned Cemeteries came into being. They may also have been burried and not had a marker. Another thing. The Stanley's that are listed here that were found could be related. Have you checked that out.? At that time many people had their own little plotts. My grmo. was burried in Lewis Co. Wa in abt 1905 on property belonging to an Uncle. Then later in abt 1924 all were moved to a cem in the nearest town. I have found where my grma is now but no dates and I still have not found her death date. Only from what other family members have said. I'd find out who the other Stanley's were if related. Also check some land any of them have bought. I have found a tidbit of info that may shed some light on research in the early 1800's in the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. If you have people that you can't find in this area or wonder what happened to where they were supposed to be buried, this may help give a reason. I have found an account noted in a family history that I was unaware of had caused so much devestation in the upper area of this land, The Louisiana Purchase. There are several Holcomb family articles by John Rayford Holcomb, Maurice Holcomb Wallace & Otha Holcomb Harrison. They were so interesting I had to read them all. This is not my surname research, but their research and notes on the family were quite extensive and detailed that I was amazed. Great job these researchers did. Sorry, I didn't mean to get carried away, here's the reference to history that I mentioned might be important and open another path to search. "SAGA OF CHEROKEE COUNTY, TEXAS", PAGE 338, article: The Early History of Joseph Holcomb Family by Otha Holcomb Harrison "New Madrid, MO., west of the Mississippi River in what was then the Louisiana Purchase, December 16, 1811, when the first of a series of earthquakes was recorded. The quake wiped out the entire community of New Madrid, and the graveyard was thrown into the Mississippi River. It was called the most extensive quake ever felt in the United States. The quake left a great area known as the 'Sunken Country'. Rivers were said to have flowed backward and boats floated up-stream. Many families fled the disaster carrying their possessions to higher ground to the north of Missouri."
