    3. Hello Teresa, My dau worked at the Prison for some yrs. I contacted her and this is what she told me. " The people who died there that their bodies were NOT called for to take home to be burried were cremated. When the bldg was changed to a prison, all ashes that were left there were burried in one plot at Pendelton. There still is a mental facilty there but across the street from the old one at this time." So she didn't say where in Pendelton the ashes were buried but maybe in a Cem there. Do you know when he died. Can you send me the name and what ever you have on him and I will see what I can find out for you. Maxine Wilton in Roy , Pierce Co. Wa. 2. Thanks to an index of the Oregon death certificates at Ancestry and then the wonderful people at the Oregon State Archives, I finally found a copy of my gr.gr. uncle's death certificate. He had disappeared from Portland circa 1923. It turns out he died at the Eastern Oregon State Hospital in 1933, having been a resident of the institution for a little over 4 years. I understand that the mental hospital was closed in the 1980's and became a prison. Does anyone on the list know what happened to the patient records after the change? I would like to see what his diagnosis was and generally just snoop through them - no genealogist ever has too much information! Theresa Liewer Ankeny,Iowa

    1. Re: [ORUMATIL] Athena Cemetery
    2. Dear Beth, I'm really not certain that Charles Smith is buried in Athena Cemetery, but it is my best guess. He purchased a plot there in 1897 (probably to bury very young children) when he was still farming his homestead outside of Weston. In 1903 he moved into Weston with his wife and four remaining children, but disappeared from the tax rolls in 1914 and the property was sold for nonpayment of taxes in 1918. I am now assuming that he became too ill to work around 1914 and when he died in 1916 there was certainly no money for a cemetery plot, let alone a headstone. Make any sense? I do have a James Smith who lived in Walla Walla Co., but as far as I can tell he never married. Charles, his nephew, worked his farm with him as a young man until about 1880, but I lost track of him after that. He was a native of England, born about 1832, and I haven't had the nerve yet to start chasing the Smith Family in the UK. Doesn't seem to be any connection, that would be too simple! Good luck in your Smith search, Ruth

I do have a couple of questions: What information do you have that makes you certain he's buried in Athena Cemetery? I'm also curious about your Smiths as I'm researching my gggrandfather James Smith, whose son John Lewis Smith is buried in Athena Cemetery (the marker reads simply J. Smith). James was the son of Berryman Smith and Nancy Lopp. Do you find any connection there? Best wishes, Beth Perry Johnston

    3. Ruth, A transcription of the Athena cemetery "residents" is online at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/or/county/umatilla/athena_cemetery_index.htm I did a quick search of both that cemetery and the Blue Mountain (fomerly Kees) Cemetery that's only a few miles away and lies between Athena and Weston and did not find Charles P. Smith either place. A listing of Blue Mountain cemetery is online at http://www.bobg.org/kees_cem.htm . You probably should double-check me, though -- it could just be tired eyes.<g> The cemetery is still active. You might contact Athena City Hall (also online at http://www.jhmand.com/athena/athena-1.html to learn more about that cemetery (they were very helpful when I visited a few years ago), and the best contact I know for Blue Mountain Cemetery is Bob Gilliland ( [email protected] ). 2. Greetings from California, I am a new subsriber to your list, but have spent many hours researching your county. My great uncle, Charles P Smith was a resident of Weston, but in 1897 he purchased a plot in the Centerville Cemetery (now Athena) from Dolph Lodge No. 80. Researchers have tried to reach the office repeatedly with no luck, so I wrote to the Grand Lodge for information. Their reply was that they had no info on the cemetery records, but did tell me that Mr. Smith had become a member of Weston Lodge No. 65 (now Wildhorse) in 1901 and, according to their records, died 29 May, 1916. Since he and his family do not appear in the 1920 census this seems reasonable, but he is not in the Death Index. A few questions for you all: How accurate is the ODI? Is the cemetery still active and, if so, is there a snail mail address? Might there be any records with the Wildhorse Lodge? Any ideas or info will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Ruth

    3. Hello all, This is a generic message to let all know that I will be typing older The Dalles Chronicle articles on the ORWASCO-L and [email protected] on Wednesdays as faithfully as I can. I will begin by inputting some obituaries that I was asked to be search for. I don't use shorthand so everything is written out. Therefore, I won't have as much material on any given Wednesday as you may like. But it is a beginning. I hope to limit obits as they do take time from other efforts. I want to be putting the "happenings" on these lists. Earline Wasser

    2. Pam, Any time, any help is appreciated. Their address for years was PO Box 64, Adams, Oregon. They moved there during or just after the depression from Nebraska, where my mother was born. They raised seven children. My mother graduated from the school in Adams (now boarded up) and was valedictorian, she was the only graduate. My grandfather was the custodian of the school. They had a house just over the bridge. I was born in Sept. 1945 and my mother was living in Adams with her parents because my father was in WWII. I was born at Pendleton General Hospital, I think it was called. I am having a hard time tracing them beyond Oregon. I think they owned their house. Sue
