According to records, on 26 Oct 1884 John L. Smith married Nanie J. Harper in Union Co., and I believe this is "my" John Lewis Smith and that Nanie probably is Nancy J. Harper, daughter of Nicholas Harper who lived in the Pendleton area. I've found John, his wife "Nanna," and five children (Jesse, Bernice, Roy, Bessie, and Earl) in the 1900 federal census that covers Athena. Following John's death his father wrote to another relative that " . . . he [John] left a wife and six children, the youngest a boy of 10 years," so there seems to be a child missing here . . . either born after the 1900 census or possibly an older child living away from home. Presuming Nanna would remarry following John's death, I searched for a marriage and came up with Nannie Smith marrying Charles W. Geisler 13 Jul 1909 in Umatilla Co. I was hoping the 1910 census would show the name of the missing child from Nanna's first marriage, especially if it were the youngest, but so far I've not been able to turn up a 1910 census record for Charles and Nannie. If anyone has any knowledge to share about this family, I'd be most grateful. Beth

My suggestion would be to contact a volunteer with Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for Umatiila County and see if they could look up the marriage for you. Then you would know if she was indeed married in Umatilla County and who the spouse was. And since you have the exact date of the marriage, it would be an easy lookup. Good Luck and let me know when you find what you're looking for on Lucy. Lois

Seeking info about family of William Adolphus KRYGER and wife (names are Robina and Lydia - not sure which she used), and two daughters -- believe names are Genevieve and Katrena L. (likely Lydia) who lived in Umatillo in the first half of the 1900s. Though married in 1910 in Snohomish CO, we think this KRYGER family moved to Umatillo Co, OR by 1920, although they also lived in Lewiston, ID - no info re dates. This couple appears (with no children) in 1920 US Census living in Precinct 27, Umatillo - and in 1930 in the same place with two teenage daughters, who were born in WA someplace! Don't know why the daughters weren't included when the 1920 census was taken - perhaps living with other relatives? 1930 census record for Umatillo says names were Genevieve and Katerena - but we were always told that one of them was named Willa or Wilma, so could be a second name or a nickname involved. Lists Genevieve as age 17 (est born1913) and Katorina (likely should be Katrena) L. as age 16 (est born 1914). Have seen an index to obits that indicates that a Lydia KRYGER died Dec. 1, 1957 in Hermiston,Umatillo Co, OR and William KRYGER died May 3, 1962 in Umatillo Co... would very much appreciate any info about these people - actually newspaper obits, cemetery records, links to online records with info, marriage information for Genevieve KRYGER and Katorina (various spellings) KRYGER.. Any help or info on any aspect of this family would be very much appreciated, Kaye Steward

Hello, I do need some help with the following Alfort family of Walla Walla Coubnty prob in the Waitsburg area. Burials in Cemeteries,. ( May been Otto) son age 8 b Wash. " " NOTE: My assumption to all of this. The Katherine Buehrer is a granmother. Must be mother of Frances and Edward and as she states her son Edward's fa as b Switzerland and Frances states her fa b on 1 census but the other 2 census later she states her fa b in Austria. Take in hand that many census takers have written things down in wrong places as well as writing and spelling wasn't always correct. So more research could tell which is correct.. If Katherine used her married name here as a most likely, then FRances J is her dau. and Frances married name would be Buehrer. Also fact that she immigrated before in 1861 that Otto Alfort immigrated in 1874 also say's that he came after Katherine did to USA. and was B in Prussia, ( Germany). At that time Prussia was part of Germany. Also notice Rosa Mae Alfort was b according to Census imfo in abt 1911. . I went to the SSDI and found the ERNEST W ALFORT's death . b 7 Nov 1913 and died 14 Mar 1990 in Waitsburg, Walla Walla Co. Wa SS . issued in Oreg. Now to check Cemeteries in Walla Walla County area for the Alfort boys. Wern't on SSDI. Also this is what I was told about 1930's The Alfort wheat ranch hired Emanuel Lloyd to work for them on wheat ranch. He would take his kids there with him and they would play with others there etc. In the summer time.. ..Ernestine mar Lloyd 6 Feb. 1921 in Freewater Ore. Divorced ???? Maxine Wilton [email protected]

Linda; What date was found where????? Did you see the cem. stone???? Also there may have been a notice in the Hermiston Herald, of which carries Standfield news.. Also there may also be something in the Milton- Freewater newspaper or even the Pendelton East Oregonian. Ask for someone to check these places with the dates you have. Remember if a paper was daily or if weekly or some may have even been bi-weekly, you will have to check from the date before and for several weeks's plus to find imfo on death or burial. If you live close Go to the Pendelton Libray or the newspaper offices in the town's. Standfield is very small and doen't have a newspaper. I have a dau who lives there for many yrs. I went to Ortdinance / Hermiston area May 1951. I now live in Western Wa. near Tacoma. Some of these newspapers are probably on film and may be able to be ordered in by a Family History Center. near you. If I can help further with more imfo let me know.
