I've "rescued" an old photograph of Jim BEST which was taken at the Ren Studio in Salem, Oregon. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Jim likely in his teens or 20's at the time. In addition to his name, someone has written the name of Flora GRICE on the back of the photograph as well, suggesting that this is the person to whom the photograph was given. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Jim and his family: James Buchanan BEST was b. 26 Aug 1885 in PA to parents Eli BEST (b. 9 Sept 1838 in Jefferson, PA) and Elizabeth Emeline SYKES (b. 12 Mar 1846 in Jefferson, PA). James married Osie Dora GRICE (b. 1888 in VA) on 14 Jun 1917 in Salem, OR, and died in Salem, OR on 12 Jul 1971. Census records provide the following information: 1900 census of Eola, OR: Ely BEST, age 61, born Sept 1838, married 19 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Farmer Emaline BEST, wife, age 54, born Mar 1846, married 19 years, 5 children/5 living, born PA, parents born England/PA James BEST, son, age 14, born Aug 1885, born PA, a Farm Laborer Jennie BEST, dau, age 12, born Dec 1888, born OR 1910 census of Eola, OR: Eli BEST, age 71, married 29 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Farmer Emeline BEST, wife, age 64, married 29 years, 4 children/4 living, born PA, parents born PA James BEST, son, age 24, born PA, a Farmer Rebeeka BEST, dau, age 20, born OR 1920 census of West Salem, OR: James B. BEST, age 34, born PA, parents born PA, a Farmer Osie D. BEST, wife, age 31, born VA, parents born VA, a Public School Teacher I am hoping to locate someone from this BEST Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of the family.
