Hello all Polk Co Researchers. I am Gayle Triller the administrator of this list and the CC for Polk Co GenWeb. As some of you may have heard Ancestry is shutting down all of the Rootsweb mailing lists. I have created a new list and am getting ready to send you all invites to join the new list. Over the past year or so the Rootsweb lists have been offline for months at a time with our new list I am hoping that we will have renewed interest and the list will become more active than it has been in the past couple of years. Gayle
Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb In light of this, new list is up and running as consolidated list with other counties included. https://groups.io/g/Oregon-Genealogy Scroll down to blue tag "Join this Group" Groups.io was developed by the man and his team, who originally developed what is now Yahoogroups, but Verizon bought him out and already driven out many groups along with wipeout of their archives. People who developed Groups.io also included those originally from Google Groups. Best all around per Dick Eastman in his write up https://blog.eogn.com/2020/01/10/groups-io-the-do-it-yourself-replacement-for-disappearing-message-boards-and-mailing-lists/ David Samuelsen
Gayle, Thanks for offering to do this. Those of us who were early users of Rootsweb are accustomed to contributing a few dollars to help support the need for server equipment when the original founder had it. He would usually send out a message, usually around the Thanksgiving, requesting donations to help cover the cost of the growth it was experiencing. After the ROOTS series appeared on television the number of Rootsweb members exploded. When the big A offered to let him use their servers free of charge he naturally agreed. The number one reason the big A exists is to make money for their owners. It has changed ownership several times over the years and a few years ago the owners at that time decided to no longer support Rootsweb as it did not generate any money for them. Backups of data stopped and IT people who know nothing about genealogy began tweaking the search field making it awkward to find anything but current postings. Thanks again for trying to help all of us. I am looking for the burial location of my great-grandmother, Della Mabel (Belle) Syron. She was born to Montgomery Syron and Mary Elizabeth Lynch on 5 Jan 1878 in Polk County. And she died in Black Rock, Polk County on 22 May 1911. She married Hank Brown (a logger) and had 6 children. Here is a brief summary of her final months (that I've found so far)... She gave birth to her 6th child, Clayton Henry Brown on 13 Jan 1911 in Black Rock (a 14 pound boy according to the Observer, on p.1 on 20 Jan 1911). Her 2.5 year old daughter, Cora, died suddenly 5 Mar 1911. Then Della herself died on 22 May 1911 in Black Rock. Her logger husband, Hank, then had to split up the older 4 children to different homes, and then gave up the infant, Clayton Henry Brown, for adoption to John and Ada Graham Thomas, who lived in Falls City. Any help on locating Della's burial site would be greatly appreciated! (and her little daughter, Cora, too if possible). Sincerely, Rob Thomasrthomasma@yahoo.com

I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the ROYAL Family of Oregon. The first is one of Cecil and Esther ROYAL which was taken at the Pickerill & Catterlin Studio in Salem, OR. Cecil appears to be about 4 years old and Esther about 1 year old. The photograph was likely taken in the 1880's with additional notes on the photograph indicating that they are "Mill ROYAL'S Children" and "Dr. DODSON'S niece and nephew". The second photograph is one of Ester (spelled differently than first photo) ROYAL which was taken at the Sperry Studio in Salem, OR when she was just an infant. Also noted on this photograph as "Mill Roys child". Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding the family: Cecil Lloyd ROYAL was b. 29 Sept 1885 in Polk Co., OR to parents Forester Wise ROYAL (b. Sept 1860 in Douglas Co. OR-d. 1934) and Ellen or Ella A. DODSON (b. Aug 1865 in Oregon-d. 1927). Cecil was one of 2 children born to this couple including a sister Ester or Esther M. Esther ROYAL married Lloyd Ellison COCHRAN (b. 10 Oct 1888 in Colfax, WA) on 25 April 1910 in Polk, OR and together they had at least one child. Census records provide the following: 1900 census of Douglas, OR: Ellen A. So sorry for the inconvenience. Hope to see you another day. Regards, Layne Sawyer List Mom Oregon State Archives P.S. The lists have been a little slow, so I thought I would throw out some help aids. Be brave and use the list, you never know who might be able to help Did you know about familysearch.org? http://familysearch.org Set up a free account with them and you can research millions of records. They even tell you if the document you want is free on their site, or with a pay site. Great place to research. Do you know about Heritage Quest? You can get access for free from your home with your library card. You can get census access from them. Ask your library for more information. Everyone knows about Ancestry.com and know it costs $$ - however did you know that most libraries have it on their public computers for free ~ that's right, all you need is a library card to access. There is also cemetery help that is free: http://findagrave.com http://billiongraves.com There is also free help at a very strange spot called LinkedIn. Most people know this is a great spot for looking for work, but it also has great boards for genealogy. Set up your free account today!
