I know the name of the man that raised my father. When in Portland I tried to get a record but was told there was none. My father used one date of birth, but census gives another date. There does exist for Portland a "Chronological Index of Births" which is a simple register, kept in date order, of births. They were only births IN the city - and of course, not all births were recorded. Did someone (or you) check this index?
