> My ancestor died in 1946 and her certificate of death stated her residence as the Campbell Hotel at 530 NW 23rd Avenue in Portland. Can anyone tell me what this place was? Just a standard hotel? Thanks. Terri< Terri - A 1923 city directory has the following advertisement for it: The Campbell, Clare B. Garoutte and Cecile M. Ellison, props, Residential Hotel with Reputation for Service - 134 23d N corner Hoyt, Tel. ATwater 0881. So, it was not a hotel as we think of them, but rather one where people lived. A furnished apartment with maid service, and perhaps board was included. You might try OHS to see if they have info on it, or a photograph, if that's something you'd be interested in.
