I think it was just a regular hotel, or apartment building. I grew up not too far from there, although a little later than 1946. I don't remember any hotels, but plenty of big old apartment buildings, so possibly it was just an apartment. It's changed a lot over the years so not sure if that building still stands--lots of "yuppie" establishments in that area now.
