    3. Is there someone in the Multnomah Co. area who could do a look-up for me in the Portland City Directories? I am very curious to find out if my g-grandfather, MOSES ROBINETT, lived in Portland, and if so, what his occupation was during the years 1915-1923. I know he lived somewhere nearby because my mother remembered him coming out to Troutdale to visit her from time to time when she was young. She thought he lived in Portland and that he died there in about 1923. I have not been able to find anything on him from the 1910 or 1920 Soundex census records. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Dorothy in Soquel, California

    3. Peggy - Glad to hear you found them. My first inclination was to say that all the dates are probably the 20th. But because they're all buried the same day. . . I'm wondering. There was another Catholic cemetery in town, on the east side, called St. Mary's. It was closed, and the graves were relocated to Mt. Cavalry. I don't know when this occurred. Perhaps this date is the interment date, and they were moved from St. Mary's, all on the same day. And if so, it might be that they simply used a month and year for the interment, and the 0 is a null entry. Just some thoughts. . . 3. Thanks to Diane Taylor, Julie Kidd, Dave Davis, Pat Palmer, and Cathy for all your suggestions. I have found out the family was Catholic. I called Mt. Calvary Cemetary (thanks Julie for the #) and they have them as follows: Dominick Cavanaugh 5-20-1907 grave #3 Margaret Cavanaugh 7-20-1921 grave #4 William Cavanaugh 7-0-1921 grave #6 Joseph Cavanaugh 7-0-1921 grave #7 Bernard Cavanaugh 7-0-1921 grave #8 Speculation? Margaret, William, Joseph, and Bernard all died on the 20th; or close to the 20th and the typist was lazy? Grave #5 was reserved for Mary Margaret Marvel Cavanaugh (buried in Seattle). Who is in #5? Who is Bernard? Young son? Grandson? This is a major breakthrough! I also located a cousin, living right here in Washington, that I met once forty years ago when I was a little girl. We talked last night and she didn't know much more than myself, but she did know the family was Catholic! Again, thank you so much for all your help. Peggy

    3. Julie, Your suggestion was a good one! I did exactly as you said and got some information from the cemetery, including the name of the funeral home (Little Chapel of Chimes in Portland). I called them and they provided me with a wealth of important information, most notably birthplace of my grandfather, name of his parents, and their birthplace. This really opens up my tree so that I can research further. I found out my great-grandfather was born in Scotland. Both the cemetery and funeral home were very, very helpful. And, I didn't have to spend a dime (except for the l/d calls) or wait for the mails to arrive. Thanks so much. Obviously, no further lookups are needed as I found what I needed. 1. ORMULTNO-D Cody, Hanson, Patrick - Long
    2. Debbie Hostetler
    3. I'm in Southern California, and also am trying to locate information on a family in Portland. My husband's mother, Lela Patrick, was born in Idaho, and moved at some time to Portland. Her death certificate says that she was 37 years old when she died in 1941, and that she had been in the Portland community for 10 years, and that she worked at the Star Cannery. Lela Patrick is the person who supplied the information for my husband's birth certificate, and she lists Conrad Bert Hanson as her husband, and her maiden name is listed as Linda Patrick on his birth certificate. My husband's name on his birth certificate is Patrick Bert Hanson. On the birth certificate, she says she's been in the Portland community for 12 years. She says she is married to Conrad Bert Hanson on the birth certificate. Lela Patrick died approximately 24 hours after giving birth to my husband, and her brother, Willis W. Patrick, gave the information for the death certificate. The death certificate shows her name as Lela Cody (Mrs. C. B. Hanson)~ just like that ~ and in the place for husband, it lists Perry Cody. The death certificate lists Perry Cody's "age of husband or wife if alive" as "?". The death certificate clearly states that at the time of her death (and obviously Phil's birth) she was married to Perry Cody. Idaho records show that Lela Patrick and Perry Cody were married on 24 Nov 1923, when Lela would have been 19 years old. I've been unable to locate any other information on Perry Cody. Phil was adopted when he was 1-1/2 years old by neighbors of Conrad Bert Hanson, and that's how he became Philip Hostetler. Riverview cemetary gave me the name of the funeral home (Fuiten Rose Chapel) who handled everything, and thankfully they are still in business. The funeral home records list another child, a Barbara Cody, who attended Hillcrest School for Girls in Salem, Oregon at the time. At that time the school was for unmarried girls who had become pregnant. We have been unable to locate Barbara Cody, and do not know her married name (if she married). We were able to locate a living neice of Conrad Bert Hanson, who said that the family disowned Conrad Bert Hanson when he gave his child up for adoption, and hadn't spoken to him since. They did believe that he "married" quite a few women and had children all across the US, but didn't bother to divorce them before marrying again. I hope you can help me! Here are my questions: 1. What is the Portland Chronological Index to Births? Is it something I can search through online? I'm in Southern California, and going to Portland to look through this at this time is impossible. 2. Do you have any ideas to help me to locate Perry Cody or Barbara Cody or their children? Hillcrest School is still in business, but they wouldn't release any information or agree to pass on a letter to Barbara Cody or her child. 3. Any other tips or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Debbie pelicanbaysoaps@home.com << Have you looked at the Portland Chronological Index to Births? It covered the early births which were reported as occurring in the city. These folks look to have lived in the city, so they might be included.>>

    3. Message text written by INTERNET:ORMULTNO-L@rootsweb.com >Hello Everyone! I need some help in finding information on my CAVANAUGH Grandmother. I had been told I was named 'Margaret Marie' the same as my Grandmother but I have found some discrepancies. Her gravestone does say Margaret Marie, but on her daughters birth certificate it says Mary Margaret and on her daughters death certicicate it says Margaret Marvel. And, she was known as 'Peggy". Her daughters birth certificate lists MM as being born in 1889. I believe she grew up in Portland, but I don't have documentation. She married my Grandfather, Albert Thomas LEGGE, about 1909-1913, again I believe in Portland. His death certificate says he was born there in 1885 but I have yet to locate a birth record or marriage certificate. A fellow researcher, did provide me with some information from the Polk Directories: 1897 - Dominick Cavanaugh 187 Chapman Mary M. Cavanaugh 187 Chapman William D. Cavanaugh 187 Chapman 1900-1901- Dominick Cavanaugh 187 Chapman, tailor Joseph D. Cavanaugh 187 Chapman, clk pac Exp. Co. bds Mary M. Cavanaugh 187 Chapman, public stenographer, Chamber of Commerce 1909-1910 Margaret Cavanaugh 187 Chapman, widow of Dominick Mary M. Cavanaugh 187 Chapman (rooming), stenographer for CJ Schnabel The names almost seem interchangeable here. In 1897, my grandmother would've been eight years old. In 1900 she would've been 11-12 years old and too young to be a stenographer so I suspect her mother was, and there was confusion with two Margaret's in the household? I believe 1909 would be Margaret, the mother and Mary M. the daughter. A note of interest: In my Aunt's (MM's daughter) yearbook next to her senior picture, it listed her plans were to be a stenographer. Another researcher did find in the Oregon Death Index (1903-1920) a William CavanAGH died 4 April 1909, Multnomah County. Nothing has been found about Dominick or Joseph D. Also, there is a family story that this family owned the'Portland Bridge'. I don't know if bridges were privately owned then, but maybe a relative was an operator of some sort. Checking the internet for Portland Bridges, I found the Hawthorne Bridge was completed in 1910. The Madison Street Bridge was in use from 1891 until it burned down in 1902. 'Portland Bridge' may have been a local term. This is everything I know. I would be most appreciative of any help with solving the name puzzle and any leads provided. I would also welcome any information on the LEGGE family. I almost forgot, my Great Grandparents were Thomas William Legge and Elizabeth Margaret MAHLER/MEHLER.< Peggy Sounds like the family is Catholic? If so, you should contact Mt. Calvary Cemetery for burial information. Their number is 503-292-6621, or the address is 333 SW Skyline Blvd, Portland OR 97221 I think you'll find that historically speaking, first and middle names were frequently interchangable. I have numerous instances in my family where names will be used in one order on one record, and reversed on the next. It's not uncommon. And the same for Mary and Marie. As they are the same name, they can be used interchangably. It's obvious you're dealing with a family whose head is Dominick Cavanaugh, his wife Mary Margaret, and various children (Mary Margaret, William D., Joseph D.). Have you looked at the Portland Chronological Index to Births? It covered the early births which were reported as occurring in the city. These folks look to have lived in the city, so they might be included. As for the "Portland" bridge, they were never privately owned. 2. Hello, I'm a new kid on your list. My husband's grandfather, William Watkin Williams, was the Director of the School of Commerce at the Lawrence University after 1905. He wrote a system of shorthand and a text on bookkeeping. He taught blind children how to write until his death at 85 years of age. He immigrated to Portland, Oregon around 1905. He had lived there for 46 years before his death in 1951. His wife's name was Jennie Aldine "Dinah" Tufts. He taught blind children how to write until his death at 85 years of age. I would like to find out more about his life and his family. If anyone can assist me, it would be greatly appreciated. Sharon

    3. Marsha - There is now a 1910 soundex for Oregon. You can borrow a copy of it through your local family history center. The film is also available at a number of libraries in Oregon, and a few elsewhere. I believe the Dallas Public Library purchased a copy, if you are near there. Or you could probably email the Oregon State Archives and ask them for a lookup. Julie JulieKidd@compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JulieKidd/

There does exist for Portland a "Chronological Index of Births" which is a simple register, kept in date order, of births. They were only births IN the city - and of course, not all births were recorded. Did someone (or you) check this index?
