Good Morning everyone In the last couple of days since my original post I have received a huge amount of information off-line regarding this family due to the kindness of listers. You have done so much to bring this family to life for me including; details of where they lived, what the area and properties were like, what their jobs were, what sort of companies they worked for. Details of when they died, how to obtain copies of the death certificates, how to get in touch with the funeral companies and finally details on where some of them are buried. So I thought that I might be able to bring them to life a little bit for you. I have uploaded a picture of the complete family (after the death of their father William). I must apologise for the quality of the picture, but it is a scan of a poor photocopy. The original is in Portland somewhere, now there's something I bet even you can't find for me! : -) I suspect the photograph was probably taken at the house of Catherine Osborne 5114 SE 58th. The address is http://www.angelfire.com/mb/ues/OsborneFamilyc1910.htm and I apologise for the adverts, but it's free webspace. Regards Jane Burn Jane.Burn@ncl.ac.uk
Hi everyone I am compiling information on a part of my family that emigrated from Northumberland, England in about 1890 and ended up in Portland. Jun 1969 Here are the notices for William Thompson Osborne died 14 March 1918 from the newspapers on the 15 March. Of course I only have a photocopy of the clipping not the actual page, so I don't know which paper. (Transcribed as printed) OSBORNE In this city March 14 William T Osborne late of 5114 Fifty-eighth Street S E age 34 years. Beloved son of Mrs Cathern Osborne and brother of Jack Osborne, Mrs Paul Sievers, Mrs P Johnson, Mrs F Ramussen, Mrs R Rogers of this city, Mrs Frank Haener of Hanford, Cal and Mrs Chester Stone of Reno, Nevada. He had been an employee of Lang & Co and formerly for nine years was with Wadhams & Co. He resided with his widowed mother, Mrs C Osborne, who with one brother Jack Osborne, and six sisters survives him. The sisters are Mrs P. J. Sievers, Mrs P. L. Johnson, Mrs Roy Rogers, Mrs H P Ramussen, Mrs F A Heaner of Hanford, Cal and Mrs Chester Stone of Sparks Nev., all of whom were present for the funeral. Mr Osborne was 34 years of age and was born in England. At the age of 5 years he came to this country and made his home in Portland. And here are the notices for John Ephraim Osborne died 29 Dec 1934. Osborne Funeral to be held today Funeral services will be held at 3pm today for John E Osborne, who died Wednesday after an operation. The services are to be held in the Wilson Chambers moturary 4614 North Mississippi Avenue. Although he was born in England Mr Osborne was brought to Portland when he was only a few months old. Six sisters living in Portland are Mrs J P Sievers, Mrs C A Stone, Mrs F Port, Mrs R W Rogers and Mrs H J Hendricks and Mary Ramussen. Burial will be in Lone Fir cemetary. Mr Osborne was born in England and came here when he was an infant. He was employed as shipping clerk for the General Grocery company for the last four years, had served the Allen and Lewis company for 10 years and previously Lang and Co for six years. Surviving are his widow Grace L Osborne, a son Jack, his mother Mrs Kathryn C Osborne, six sisters Mrs J P Sievers, Mrs C A Stone, Mrs F Port, Mrs R W Rogers and Mrs H J Hendricks and Mary Ramussen all of Portland. I have looked up Lone Fir on the net and it says that due to early bad record keeping there are nearly 10,000 unknown graves at Lone Fir. Are deaths in 1918 and 1934 likely to be properly recorded? Also was it usual to have the funeral service in the moturary? I have also looked up 5114 58th Street SE and I see there is a SE 58th Avenue, is that the same place? I see that North Mississippi still exists. Can anyone shed any light on the type of properties they are? Can anyone tell me about the companies listed in the notices? John Osborne b. 23 Feb 1914 d. 23 Oct 1963or 1964 was the son of John E Osborne and was killed in a train crash. I would also like to find out about that if possible. I have not been able to find him listed on the SSDI Death Database. My apologies for posing so many questions all at once. Regards Jane Burn Jane.Burn@ncl.ac.uk
>From past post: I am in contact with an ancestor of Verden Moffitt. I first found this name on the list of records that the Oregon State Archives has within the 1895 Census for Marion CO. I was interested because of the similarity to my maiden name, Verdena Moffitt. A message from Gunner Dave suggests that with my talent for contacting ANCESTORS and with his business knowledge that we could go a long way. I did mean DESCENDANT. (My speel cheeker doesn't work). I am hoping that someone can add to the info I have below on the family of Isaac HILL. Isaac was the eldest son of Daniel Webster Hill. About 1854 Isaac's parents moved the family from Putnam Co., W Va to Wayne County, Iowa. The family moved again in 1862 from Iowa to Multnomah Co., OR. Isaac and Mary moved to Oregon in 1862, probably with Isaac's parents. In 1869 he acquired 165 acres in NE Portland under the Homestead Act. He paid $1.25 per acre. His land was bordered by current day 37th, 47th, Killingsworth and Prescott. He was an active member of the Centenary Methodist Church. During the years 1882-1888 he and Mary sold much of their land for $40. per acre. I am in contact with an ancestor of Verden Moffitt. I first found this name on the list of records that the Oregon State Archives has within the 1895 Census for Marion CO. I was interested because of the similarity to my maiden name, Verdena Moffitt. Although I received a copy of the census entries I cannot find them in my disorganization. This person is interested if there is a connection to my line. His information consists of the fact that his father was Verdan M.MOFFITT and his grandfather was A.T. MOFFITT. His father was at one time the chief of police in Salem, OR. I would estimate that to be in the 20's or 30's as he was three years old at the time of the 1895 census. Verdan had a twin sister Velma who lived and died in Portland, OR and was married to a BLACKBURN. His brother Victor MOFFITT (born Mar 19, 1895) was apparently the Baby MOFFITT listed and died in McMinneville, Yamhill CO in 1968. He left two children. Other members of the household in 1895 were Baby MOFFITT; C.E. MOFFITT; and T.E. Moffitt . This gentleman was born in 1926 and would like to find information. He has no computer. He says that he thinks he has many cousins in Oregon but is not in contact with any. He lives in Whittier, CA. I would like to help him make some connections so if there is anyone out there with any information, please contact me. He mentions a town by the name of Verden and there are many any in his family with this first name. I would think it might be from a maternal side however because that is located in Poland and at one time in East Prussia. The Moffitt's seem to be primarily from Scotland. Hi, I am new to this list. I am researching the following families: Frederick and Nelda Peacor, living in Portland from just after 1900 until at least 1940, and Charles and Charlotte Carlson. I believe Charles moved to Portland in the early 1900's and worked as a janitor in the school system. Any information would be helpful. I have been told that Charlotte Carlson died in the 1930's and was buried in Rose City Cemetery. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Joan Peacor
I am looking for any information on Rettia (or Rettie) Schreckhise. She was born in 1892 in Missouri. She went to Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon probably around 1910. I am looking for any information about William Summerfield. I believe he was born in the late 1800's, probably in the late 1880's or early 1890's. I don't know where he was born, but he eventually settled in Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon. I believe his parents were of German descent. I think he eventually took up work in meat packing or meat processing. If anyone has any information regarding William Summerfield, please e-mail me at: steve7492@aol.com

Hi! My grandfather married his cousin in 1921. Both lived in Portland, but they got married in Yreka, CA, just over the Oregon border in CA. I'm surmising from this that perhaps Oregon and Washington both had restrictions on cousins marrying. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks much! Mary

The only "index" I'm aware of is the 1920 Soundex for the entire state of Oregon, which is on 69 rolls. Typically, what one does is order the Soundex roll that covers the name one is looking for (e.g., roll 67 "W-421 Alfred H. - W-452 Ivor") and use that to find the Enumeration District and page number of the person(s) one is looking for. Send me the full names of the person(s) you are looking for (and state of birth and approximate age if you have it) and I will look them up in the Soundex for you on Tuesday. Hi! I've requested the microfilm for the 1920 Multnomah census through interlibrary loan. I have a couple questions, though. First, is there a good way to determine on what page my ancestors will be, i.e. is there an index that I can access, so that I don't have to scroll through the whole census? Secondly, I'm suspecting that there may be more that one microfilm reel for Multnomah County? Does any one know if this is the case? Once I get the reel, I'll be happy to do a lookup for anyone, if they can tell me the page number and name to look for. Thanks! Mary
Hello Listers Given that this time of the year people, in their spare time, often spend more time with their genealogy, I thought I might send what information I have on my family in hopes that others may read this and we can make a family connection. I hope this isnt too long so please bear with me. My g.g.g. grandfather was Terence Connor of Ireland. Terence was married to Mary Stewart and came to the U.S. in 1846 with their two children Thomas and Mary. Thomas married Mary E. Willard (originally from New York). Mary Willard died in the early 1870's. Thomas then married one Cecilia Dufficy. Thomas, Mary and Cecilia had the following children in Currie, Murray County and Shetek County, Minnesota, (1) Robert Owen Connor (B: Jan 21,1871) (D: 1945 in Donald, Washington) married Annie Helena Owen (B: Feb 16,1876) Portage Wisconsin and died, later in life in Florence, South Dakota). After a divorce he married one Elizabeth Bond (B:1882) (who also died in Donald, Washington) . Robert, Anna and Elizabeth had the following children, all of whom were born in Waubay, South Dakota., Patrick Connor, Michael Connor, Pearl Connor who married John Butler, later died in Pendleton, Oregon. They had two children, Patricia Butler and Iva Marie Butler, Robert Connor, Leona Myrtle Connor (B: Aug 28,1908) Leona married an Ivan (last name unknown), Lyle Robert Connor (B: Oct 23, 1896) died in Concord, California. Lyle married one Gladys Benson and had two children that I know of, Harold and Audrey Connor ( I understand that there maybe a Washington or Oregon State University connection to at least the children and possibly the parents), Mary (Mae) Elizabeth Connor (B:1897) died in Mission, B.C., Canada, Leon Wilbur Connor (B:1900) married and unknown woman and they had two children Leon Wilbur Connor (Jr.) (Died in Seattle, Wash., 1999) and Kathy Connor who married a fellow last name of Pearson, Virgil Thomas Connor (my grandfather) (B: Aug.30, 1902) and married Dru Passey and lived primarily in Alberta, Canada. Robert Owen Connor moved from South Dakota in the early 1900s and re-settled in the Bow Island/Magrath/Lethbridge areas of Alberta, Canada, however after a period of time they moved back to the U.S. and lived in Washington (Yakima Valley) and Oregon(Pendleton) State. (2) Minnie Gertrude Connor (B: Nov 10, 1872) married two people during her lifetime, one fellow, named Gustafson and the other, William Soward. The only other information known about them is that they had at least one child, Anna Marie Soward (B: Feb 23,1892) and that at one time were residents of Spokane, Washington. (3) Ella May Connor (B: Dec 27th, 1874) and died in Heppner, Oregon on Sept. 16,1946. She married Fred William Owen (B: Mar 8, 1872) and he died in 1953 in Tacoma, Washington. I have extensive information on this family line. (4) Charles Thomas Connor (B: Apr 26th, 1878). I have no further information on him. (5) George H. Connor (B: May 11, 1880). The only other facts I know about him is that he had two children Earl Connor and Colista Connor (6) John Connor (B: Jun 6, 1884) married a woman by the first name of Julia. He had two children that I know of, Cordelia Connor an Wayne Connor (7) Nora Connor (B: May 26, 1887) and died in Pendelton, Oregon. She was known to have married Joseph Swartz and they had one child that I know of, George Swartz. Again, I hope that there is a family connection out there, if so, please contact me direct and again thanks for your time. Mike Connor
