Hi-- Does anyone have any information about a Judge Fee who would have been a Judge--probably in Portland, Oregon in 1937 and 1938? Julie was kind enough to tell me about an Oregonian newspaper article about my grandfather-Ralph A. Mainwaring--dated Dec. 8, 1937. It was titled "Man Without a Country" and noted that although my grandfather had lived in the US--mostly Portland, for 49 of his 50 years--and had been a Portland Policeman, etc--it was learned that he was not a US citizen. He was a baby when his parents came from Canada and he always had thought he was a citizen. Anyway----------A Judge Fee was to grand my grandfather citizenship on Feb. 17, 1938. I am just hoping to add a bit more to my story--Can you imagine what that must have been like? To suddenly discover that you were not a US citizen? Any info is much appreciated--Thank you--Linda :)
sorry list-- I sent that warning to the whole least by accident!!! Kathy

Hi List St. Patrick's Day has been in the past a day for good luck and celebration for my family so I thought I would re-send my bunch of ancestors out again to see if I can hook up with any new cousins! If anyone listed is at all familiar please let me know! My g.g.g. grandfather was Terence Connor of Ireland. Terence was married to Mary Stewart and came to the U.S. in I believe1846 with their two children Thomas and Mary.Thomas married Mary E. Willard (originally from New York). Mary Willard died in the early 1870's. Thomas then married one Cecilia Dufficy. Thomas, Mary and Cecilia had the following children in Currie, Murray County and Shetek County, Minnesota, (1) Robert Owen Connor (B: Jan 21,1871) (D: 1945 in Donald, Washington) married Annie Helena Owen (B: Feb 16,1876) Portage Wisconsin and died, later in life in Florence, South Dakota). After a divorce he married one Elizabeth Bond (B:1882) (who also died in Donald, Washington) . Robert, Anna and Elizabeth had the following children, all of whom were born in Waubay, South Dakota., Patrick Connor, Michael Connor, Pearl Connor who married John Butler, later died in Pendleton, Oregon. They had two children, Patricia Butler and Iva Marie Butler, Robert Connor, Leona Myrtle Connor (B: Aug 28,1908) Leona married an Ivan (last name unknown), Lyle Robert Connor (B: Oct 23, 1896) died in Concord, California. Lyle married one Gladys Benson and had two children that I know of, Harold and Audrey Connor ( I understand that there maybe a Washington or Oregon State University connection to at least the children and possibly the parents), Mary (Mae) Elizabeth Connor (B:1897) died in Mission, B.C., Canada, Leon Wilbur Connor (B:1900) married and unknown woman and they had two children Leon Wilbur Connor (Jr.) (Died in Seattle, Wash., 1999) and Kathy Connor who married a fellow last name of Pearson, Virgil Thomas Connor (my grandfather) (B: Aug.30, 1902)and married Dru Passey and lived primarily in Alberta, Canada. Robert Owen Connor moved from South Dakota in the early 1900s and re-settled in the Bow Island/Magrath/Lethbridge areas of Alberta, Canada, however after a period of time they moved back to the U.S. and lived in Washington (Yakima Valley) and Oregon (Pendleton) State. (2) Minnie Gertrude Connor (B: Nov 10, 1872) married two people during her lifetime, one fellow, named Gustafson and the other, William Soward. The only other information known about them is that they had at least one child, Anna Marie Soward (B: Feb 23,1892) and that at one time were residents of Spokane, Washington. (3) Ella May Connor (B: Dec 27th, 1874) and died in Heppner, Oregon on Sept. 16, 1946. She married Fred William Owen (B: Mar 8, 1872) and he died in 1953 in Tacoma, Washington. I have extensive information on this family line. (4) Charles Thomas Connor (B: Apr 26th, 1878). I have no further information on him. (5) George H. Connor (B: May 11, 1880). The only other facts I know about him is that he had two children Earl Connor and Colista Connor (6) John Connor (B: Jun 6, 1884) married a woman by the first name of Julia. He had two children that I know of, Cordelia Connor an Wayne Connor (7) Nora Connor (B: May 26, 1887) and died in Pendelton, Oregon. She was known to have married Joseph Swartz and they had one child that I know of, George Swartz. Again, I hope that there is a family connection out there and Happy St. Patrick's Day to all. Mike Connor

He left his family in MO sometime around 1855 and headed west (boy, that narrows it down). Family tradition has it that he was tracked down by his 2 youngest sons in 1895, operating a ferry on the Columbia River in Portland. Where he was for 40 years, no one knows. Have had no luck with census or tax info for Multnomah Co, so I thought I would try this angle. Any clues? Roger Keith Jacksonville, NC< Hmm. Yes, they did regulate ferries. But there are a few things that make me not sure how to answer you. In the early days (1840s-1850s) I know that the state legislature governed the ferries. I don't know when or if that changed, so don't know if the county would be where you should look. I don't think it is the city. Even today, Multnomah County controls the bridges across the Willamette in the middle of downtown Portland. A second problem is, if the ferry was on the Columbia River, that wouldn't have been Portland until a very recent time period. The Willamette river flows through the city, and meets up with the Columbia north of town. Before 1890, all that was city of Portland was west of the Willamette. And if the ferry did operate across the Columbia, he could have lived on either side, so maybe was in Washington. I checked an 1890 city directory, and he is not listed, in Portland or any of the surrounding towns. But, again, the banks of the Columbia would have been at the furthest reaches, and not a part of any city at that time. Have you checked out the information at the Oregon State Archives? I see there is a D. Keith enumerated in the 1895 Multnomah County census - you can email the archives and they will make you a copy for a quarter, plus postage. Presuming this is him, he is in precinct 20, page 33. The following page has a list of contacts, both e-mail and snail-mail. <http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpaddresslist.html> It's the only reference I see, but they don't have a lot of Multnomah County Records. Linda - I'd be happy to look it up, but don't have those years here. I will get back to you in a day or two with what I find. Julie JulieKidd@compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JulieKidd/
Hi-- Is there someone willing to look in the Portland, Oregon City Directies for the following? Edward and Dorothy BARBER: 1917 (possibly a year or two earlier, also, and perhaps 1918 and 1919) --Their daughter--my mother's cousin--Dorothy Jean Barber was born in Portland, Oregon in 1917. ALSO--could you record the information beside the name (I know it often gives the address and occupation) Arthur and Annie (Mary Ann) MAINWARING: They may have lived in Portland to be near their daughter Dorothy BARBER and son Ralph MAINWARING, during the same years. 1917, for sure, and possibly two years prior to and after 1917. These were my great grandparents. I can't find anything about them after about 1900 when they were still in Pembina Co., North Dakota. Mainwaring may have been spelled in a variety of ways--depending upon who wrote it :) Arthur was a marble cutter and stonemason in London, Ontario, Canada in 1883. Would he have been a member of the MASONS? I know my grandfather, Ralph A. Mainwaring was. I just can't seem to get ahold of any MASON information. Ralph was a member of the MT. Hood Lodge in 1913 or 1914 until he became a 32nd degree Mason (That's all I know about Masons:) Any help will be much appreciated. I've seen wonderful things happen on this site-- Thanks for whatever you may be able to do--Linda Swanson Moscow, Idaho :)

>Yes, you are right. Portland Oregon is in Multnomah County. It is the largest city and seat of the county. The Weatherly Building is located at 516 SE Morrison, Portland, Oregon 97214. It's not exactly in a part of town that you would be wandering around in. There are a lot of businesses. It is about five blocks from the Willamette River on the east of the river. Some of those buildings in that part of town are apartments for low income people. Don't know if there were any people that the building was named for but it probably came about that way. If someone had a book about the history of Portland it would tell you. Hope this tells you something.< Boy, you sound like someone from the 'burbs. I happen to pass the Weatherly building to and from my way to work every day - in fact, live 8 blocks from it. Guess I'll have to be more careful now that I know I live in a bad part of town! : ) The building is not all that old - so I don't know it'd have all that much historical significance. The building is listed in the 1930 City Directory - George W. Weatherly (see listed below) is probably for whom the building was named. He lived in Laurelhurst (a more posh area), was chairman of the board of Dir Western Dairy Products Co, president of Crystal Ice & Stage Co., vice-resident The Citizens National Bank, and of Jones Weatherly & Co. Clayton W. Weatherly was sec-treas of Jones Weatherly & Co. - and is listed at the "building office". In the 12-story building are (among others) the Crystal Ice & Stage Co., lots of attorney, real estate, the Portland Bulletin (a weekly paper), the Pacific Woodmen Life Associiation, KTBR Radio Broadcasting Station, Carnation Milk Products. The 10th floor housed the Weatherly Building Surgical Hosptial - the upper floors seem to be populated by lots of dentists, physicians, orthodontists, etc. I have a list here of the biographical sketches that were done in those "mug books" around the turn of the century, and find the following Weatherly's listed: Fred S. Weatherly (b.1869) George W. Weatherly -- sketch is in "History of the Columbia River Valley >From The Dalles to the Sea", written by Fred Lockley, and published 1928. Portlant, Oregon (am I right in thinking this is in Multnomah County?), houses the Weatherly Building. I do not actually know where that is. But I have WEATHERLY ancestors, from Pennsylvania, and one or two of them moved to the midwest, and it is entirely feasible that they continued further west, perhaps even being the source of the name of this building. Do any of you have ancestors of the name, or know anything of the history of this building? Thanks, Vince Summers (Virginia)
Does anyone know if there is a way to research past members of the Mason organization? I am trying to find Charles Carlson, he was quite active in the Mason's in Portland from 1930's to the 1950's. Thanks, Joan

SMITH b April 7, 1854 in IL James JOHNSON b 1759, fought in the Revolutionary War and died in 1838 in Roane Co, Tennessee. The James and Anna JOHNSON family traveled from Tennessee, to Iowa Territory about 1841, and then on to Oregon by wagon train in 1847. They settled a land claim in Tuality, Washington Co, Oregon in May of 1848, just 2 miles north of Forest Grove, OR. Here they remained until James died in 1870, the sons raising their families in Washington Co, nearby Columbia Co, Marion Co and Multnomah Co areas. Many descendants stayed in the Portland, Oregon area and many traveled to the San Francisco, California area. If this is your family, or you think it might be, please contact me. Hello List-- I am reposting my surnames, above. I am especially interested in finding the family of John and Katie/Katherine (Lazaryszyn) Minto, probably in the Portland area. John came to the USA from Wetlina/Vetlyna, Galicia (now Poland) in the early 1900s. They had four sons, John, Mike, Frank and Joe, all deceased. Katie/Katherine Lazaryszyn may have been from PA. John Minto's brother was Frank Kiczak/Kicha, and Frank was married to Katie/Katherine's sister Mary. There was some kind of falling out between the couples, and to this day there is no (or very little) communication between the surviving family members and descendents. John Minto and Frank Kiczak/Kicha were the brothers of my grandfather, Louis Kicha. Any info on these families would be greatly appreciated! Kathy Hutson
