" THE NATIONAL LEWIS AND CLARK BICENTENNIAL EXHIBITION " `````` WILL BE HERE IN OREGON `````` Thought that some of you on the Mailing List would be interested in the following information that I received. I live near FORT CLATSOP, where Lewis and Clark wintered and the SALT CAIRN is here in SEASIDE. Carla leighton@pacifier.com Dear Ms. Leighton It does look as if the one west coast venue for the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Exhibition will be in Oregon. However, it will not be in Astoria, but rather, most likely, in Portland. We are still in negotiations, or I could advise you of the location. However, the exhibition will be in Oregon 200 years after Lewis & Clark were in Oregon themselves (fall 2005-winter 2006). We will update our website (www.mohistory.org) with the full tour schedule and venues when everything has been finalized. Hope you enjoy it when it makes it to Oregon. Sincerely Joseph Carlisle National Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Exhibition Researcher
I am hoping someone may have came across this or have it in an obituary file! Looking for the obituary of Elmer Ernest CLINK died: January 1, 1996 I believe Metro Portland, Oregon. Thank-You for any help!!!
Dear Listers, Today my husband and I made our rounds to area cemeteries to place flowers on the graves, and perform the annual trimming and cleaning of them... This year I found out that my GreatGrandparents (Minnie POLLOW and James RICHARDSON) are buried at the Columbia Cemetery, on Columbia Blvd, by Interstate-5. We took a trip out to the cemetery to clean the graves... It took us almost an hour to locate the graves, but we eventually found them... they were in Terrible shape!! and not just our graves... the whole graveyard!! We had a chance to speak with the care taker of the cemetery, a Mr. Roth, who is in his 70s! I was appalled to learn that the county was in no was assisting this man in his 70s in upkeep for the cemetery... either physically or financially... He mows and clips, and weeds... and uses his own money... Many of the very old stones have been tipped over, and the grass does not get a clipped as often as it should.... and the oldest flat stones are becoming covered in grass, and will soon be lost... There once was an old caretakers? residence there, but now it is boarded over... the faucets no longer run... This is such an incredibly Sad situation.... My Question is: Does anyone have any idea of whom I could write to seek assistance and funding for the upkeep of this historic cemetery?? From what Mr. Roth said, he has asked "Metro", but they refused... I am from Vancouver, so am not versed in Oregon or Multnomah "politics". Surely someone could take interest in this plight!! The local papers? Maybe a local Boy Scout Troop who could assist, and maybe earn a few community service badges?? I am sure any small assistance would be so very much appreciated.... Mr. Roth also has in his possession the original inventory listing for the cemetery... he might be willing to give a copy to the folks at Rootsweb... I talked to him about that... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Yes, I do have the web page that announces the NARA increases and I apologize for not sending it out with the posting. Visit http://www.nara.gov/nara/fees-pro.html Opposing comments must be received by June 26, 2000 so let's hurry and spread the word to Congress and the White House as fast as possible! Thanks, Jason Canon ----- Original Message ----- From: <GaleFuller@aol.com> To: <fiatlux@va.prestige.net> Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 2:54 PM Subject: Re: [CANNON] Oppose the proposed NARA Reproduction Fee Schedule Increases! > Jason, Do you have the web page that has the new fee structure? Greetings, I am a fellow researcher that paid more than $30,000 last year in Federal taxes alone. What did I get for it? Not as much as it cost that is for sure. Why can't NARA automate and place their data and forms on-line the same way the IRS has all of the tax forms online to download for free? It should only cost a few pennies or so for us to perform our own searches on a wisely designed NARA web site. NARA could reasonable be expected to make a significant PROFIT by simple charging pennies per sheet if this information was made available via the Internet. $17 is outrageous! I urge all of my fellow researchers to oppose the NARA rate increases by creating a message to your own Congressional representatives (look under www.senate.gov or www.house.gov to find their email addresses. Enclosed, below is my sample response addressed to NARA, my representatives, a local newspaper, the White House, and even the Governor of my state opposing the direction (higher fees and more paperwork) that NARA is proposing. Please pass this message on to fellow researchers. ----- Original Message ----- To: <comments@nara.gov> Cc: <senator@robb.senate.gov>; <senator@warner.senate.gov>; <GovenorsOffice@gov.state.va.us>; <ombudsman@washpost.com>; <vice-president@whitehouse.gov>; <president@whitehouse.gov>; <RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 15, 2000 8:44 PM Subject: NARA Reproduction Fee Schedule Dear Representatives and NARA Officials, This message is to express that the newly proposed fees to be collected by NARA is wrong headed. NARA has recently proposed to revise its schedule of fees for reproduction of records and other materials in the custody of the Archivist of the United States. This proposed rule covers production of Federal records created by other agencies that are in the National Archives of the United States, donated historical materials, Presidential records, Nixon Presidential historical materials, certain Federal agency records in NARA Federal records centers, and records filed with the Office of the Federal Register. According the NARA the fees are being changed to reflect current costs of providing the reproductions. This rule will affect members of the public and Federal agencies who order reproductions from NARA. It is clear that NARA is heading in the wrong direction with regards to the manner in which it conducts business. Instead of seeking to continue doing more business at higher fees, via the same old paper filled process, NARA should be rapidly moving to online (Internet) web based customer shopping and lower fees. The Internal Revenue Service web site has provided an outstanding example of how to disseminate government held information at zero or significantly reduced costs. The Congress should appoint a special investigative committee to learn why NARA cannot follow the footsteps of dozens of other Federal agencies and private industry by lowering the costs of information retrieved electronically via the Internet. This new NARA proposal is little more than mismanagement in a modern era where information is rapidly becoming a cheap commodity. Higher taxes and/or higher fees are not the correct operational solutions for the new century. Efficient management, reduced cost, and easy access is where NARA and the Federal government must head. Sincerely, Add your own Name and Postal Address Here or Your Congressmen will not respond!

Hello all, I am researching my great uncle: Horace Arthur GREENWAY who was born at New Plymouth in New Zealand on 5.2.1874. Family belief is that he spent a large part of his life in Portland, Oregon. He was a Tailor by occupation. The Oregon Death Index lists a Horace A. GREENWAY who died October 17, 1960, in Multnomah County. Death Cert. # 13437. Is it at all possible, please, for SKS to do a lookup to determine whether this death relates to my Horace A. GREENWAY before I apply to the Oregon State Vital Records and pay the relevant fee? Kind Regards from Graham Greenway in Victoria, Australia.
