I have a photo taken in Portland. It is of F.T. Blake & Co. Grocers. It appears to be on a corner piece of property. I believe it is Lafayette or Fayette Blake(descended from Jasper Blake, NH) Is this name familiar to anyone?
Julie - Don't know just what info you're looking for, but can add this - have I not looked these up before? But, I will repeat it, just in case I haven't. All those mentioned are buried at River View Cemetery, all in Section 9, Lot 65: Mary Sleight, Grave # 8, intered on 3 Oct 1899 John Sleight, Grave #9. intered on 12 Dec 1916 Anna Sleight, Grave #10, interred on 7 Dec 1919 Robert L. Brant, Grave #7, interred on 11 Mar 1921 Robert Sleight, Grave #6, interred on 28 April 1953 I don't know what relationship Robert Brant is to the others, but the fact that he is buried in the middle of the family, leads me to believe that he must be of some relation. It would be worth investigating. You should write to the archives and get copies of the death certificates of the middle three, and probably also have them check to see if Mary is listed in the Chronological Index to Portland Deaths. There is also a Portland Birth register which would cover the 1894 birth of Reta - which you mentioned in another post. All of those can be searched at the Archives, at the Genealogical Forum - in Portland, or through a Family History Center. You should also check for obituaries in the Portland papers. You will find those at the University of Oregon library, or at the Multnomah County library, Portland State University Library, Lake Oswego Public Library, or I'm sure others of which I am not aware. I also thought that I would add that the two addresses you gave where they lived, are different from the number designations today. The Kearney address would be in the block between 13th & 14th on today's map, and the address on 3rd, would lie between Montgomery & Harrison. Both locations are no longer in areas where there are any houses. It is all commercial properties. What kind of information are you looking for by your post? Dear Julie Portland is a large city and it has been here a long time. I knew a lot of peope named Smith and Wallace over the years. Can you be more specific about when these people lived here and what their given names were and perhaps what kind of work or any idea where they lived in Portland. Just surnames is too 'general' to get any replies that will help you in your research. Verla - Oregon has a death index. It is available on microfilm, at most Oregon libraries, but more importantly, at the Family History Library. You can order the film in and check it yourself. I believe that you can also send an email request to the Oregon State Archives, and they will check the index for you. At least, I believe this is one of the types of searches they will do. You can e-mail them at : reference.archives@state.or.us Julie JulieKidd@compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JulieKidd/
I want to thank those who helped me gather information on the family of Waters CARMAN. He was born in 1811 (in NY or CT), moved to Illinois in 1822, to California in 1849 and to Oregon in 1852. To help those who have information on only one of his marriages, I will list below both wives and all of his children. Waters' parents were Jacob Carman, Jr. and Mahala Golden, both born about 1785. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Carman, Sr. (born November 13, 1747 in Oyster Bay, NY) and Rachel Weeks. Waters Carman was a millwright and worked as an overseer at the mills of the Durham family at Oswego, Oregon. At their home he met his second wife; she was a recent widow. After their marriage in 1852, Waters and Lucretia applied for and received a 320 acre Donation Land Claim in 1853 near Lake Oswego, Oregon. Hi Everyone-- I am hoping someone can help me in my search for the names of the wife and children of ISAAC HILL. He owned land in Oregon that I am researching. He was born in what is now Mason County, W. Va. Isaac's parents were Daniel Webster HILL (b. 1813 in Va.) and Rebecca THORNTON (b. 1818). Descendants of Daniel Webster Hill 1 Daniel Webster Hill b: August 22, 1813 in Virginia d: June 21, 1874 maybe in Oregon +Rebecca Thornton b: 1818 m: March 25, 1835 in Mason Co., VA 2 Isaac Hill b: 1836 in WV d: 1917 in Portland, OR +Mary b: in WV [What was Mary's surname? Isaac's brothers Bowdridge, Lorenzo and Laban also moved to Oregon and acquired land near Portland, Oregon. Thanks for your help. Sue
Message text written by INTERNET:ORMULTNO-L@rootsweb.com > Hi Everyone -- I am hoping that someone has information about Waters CARMAN. He took Donation Land Claim # 74 (Certificate # 1663). It was for 326 acres in the northwest corner of Clackamas County, just a mile from the Multnomah Co border. It was in Twp. 2S Range 1E; today it is in Lake Oswego near highway I-5. Carman Drive in that area must have been named for him. From records in the Oregon History Center, Waters Carman was born in 1811 in Luzerne Co., PA and was in Oregon before Dec. 1, 1850. He married in 1852 to Mrs. Lucretia Gurney. This Waters Carman could have been the brother of Rachel Carman; who lived in Sangamon Co., Illinois in the 1830s. Rachel was born in 1814 in NY or PA and married Jacob E. Roll, and later his cousin, Pierson Roll. Parents of Rachel Carman (and therefore Watters Carman) were Jacob Carman and Mahala Golden. I am interested in Waters Carman and what he did after arrival in Oregon. Did he have an earlier marriage? any children? Can anyone confirm the connection to Rachel Carman and her parents? Thanks, Sue in Virginia< Sue - I don't know if anyone has answered on this, but had a minute at the library tonight and looked him up. There is a (short) biographical sketch of him in Lang's "History of the Willamette Valley", on page 712. It says he was born 1811 in PA; removed to Illinois in 1822, served in the Black Hawk War, in 1835 married Lavina Buckman (who died in 1846) by whom he had four children, in 1849 went to California, then on to Oregon in 1850, married Mrs. Lucretia Gurney in 1852 and had 4 more children. He died on his farm 29 Sep 1878. The 1860 Clackamas Co census says he was born in NY, age 48; wife Lucretia age 32, and the children in the household are George 6, Mary 4, and Henrietta 1. Anyway, he seems a likely candidate to be a relative of your Illinois Carman. Hope this helps somewhat. Julie JulieKidd@compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JulieKidd/
Message text written by INTERNET:ORMULTNO-L@rootsweb.com ><<This Isaac Hill was b West Virginia in 1836. His wife was Mary. they came to Oregon in 1862. He acquired the 165-acre tract under the homestead act. On today's map, it's bounded by NE 37th, NE 47th, NE Killingsworth and NE Prescott. Between 1882 and 1888 they sold most of the property for $40 per acre. He died 1917, aged 81, survived by a wife Mary and 5 children. Was a member of Centenary Methodist Church. >> Hi Julie Thanks for the info -- especially the streets that bounded his land. Do you know the names of the 5 children? Sue< Sue - The 1870 census has been published, so I looked in that - they only had four children by then, all under ten. Names were John W., Samuel, Virginia, and Charles. I also looked to see if he had a biographical sketch, and he didn't. I know it's not much, but hope it helps. Julie JulieKidd@compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JulieKidd/
