The copyright holder may reproduce the work or license others to do so, and receives payments (royalties) for each performance or copy. The U.S. law (rewritten in 1978) extends protection for the creator's life plus 50 years. Books, plays, musical compositions, sound recordings, photographs, works of art, and other original creations may be copyrighted. Copyright laws first appeared in the 15th cent., when PRINTING began in Europe. The earliest American statute was passed in 1790. The U.S., with most other nations, subscribes to the 1952 Universal Copyright Convention.
