Help, I remember seeing a site that not only listed the cemeteries in Marion Co. but also listed the names of those buried there. I can't seem to find it now. Can anyone help my failing memory? Thanks Brian
Hi Griers arrived in Marion Co. about 1857 or so and lived there until at least 1930. Most lived in Stayton area. Is anyone actively researching the name? Also, to you long time residents (Dan), are there any Griers still residing in the area? Thanks Brian Grier
Hi list: Sorry to do this to you all, but I'm going on vacation and can't remember how to get off the list temporarily! HELP! Thanks CHosk
Hi, Group I am looking at a page from the 1860 Marion Co. census and have a couple of questions. Does anyone know what the abbreviation "Do" means in the Profession column? Also Is there a way to determine the actual location of a home by using the number from the "Dwelling" column? Thanks Brian
We have a genealogy society - it meets in Salem, we also have 2 Histroical centers out her in Stayton and in MIll City I am a member ; I am also starting the genealogy group in Stayton it has already been discussed and approved. Most of the seniors around here I go to church with, I have lots of stories comming in . I am working on the North Saniam question for Brian but we need a little time the last person I need to talk to is quite old . I will be at the Stayton Musuem next saturday 1-4 with the Historical Society. Any oneis welcome to come and look over old papers in the museum there . _*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Dan Matney Genealogy Community Support Site http://www.angelfire.com/or/matney -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- ---------- > From: Mollie Morrow <molliem@ix.netcom.com> > To: ORMARION-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [ORMARION-L] Fairview Cem survey > Date: Sunday, July 25, 1999 9:58 PM > > Hi, I live in Marion County. Canyon people call residents of Stayton, Sublimity, and Scio "flatlanders" so I don't think we are included. My own definition would be towns that are in higher elevation beginning with Mehama and Lyons, Mill City, Gates, Idanha and Detroit. Old Maps of Oregon can be viewed at the Oregon State Archives building on Summer St in Salem. They have an Atlas of Marion county that defines Donation Land Claims. They have them for several years. If you are not in or near Salem, a large public library may have these maps also. Group, I've noticed lots of traffic lately about the Fairview Cemetery in Mill City/Gates. Does anyone have info. about the Stayton Pioneer Cem. formally called Grier/Campbell of Campbell/Grier Cemetery? I believe that my GGgrandfather donated that land for a "public burying ground". If anyone is aware of any history of this site, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks Brian Grier Brian Grier

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<I have a Fairview cemetery listed in Mill City, Marion County. And I just checked GNIS and it places Gates in Marion county and calls it North Mill City? I don't live there though and maps can be wrong. Is this correct? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> That cemetery is half way between Mill city and Gates on the old Hyway . Your list Mom here, I don't live in the area(live in Crescent City, Del Norte County, CA), but would love to see a genealogy group formed if there isn't one already. I know there is some type of society in Aurora, but not well organized. Used to get their newsletters. Keep me informed, and I'm glad to see some discussion on the list too. Since the cemetery is up on Linn County page already, I will just link to those pages from Marion County. Who wants to reinvent the wheel. Cathy, thank you so much for all your hard work. Cathy do>you live in this area ? Any one? >Dan > Hi Dan, I live in Scio area which is east Linn County....And I think I know the book you are referring to about the Gates Cemetery....Wonderful source. Anyone who doesn't take you up on your offer to look up information is missing some good "stuff". And don't be sorry, because your first query about the McMillan Mill is what made me think someone was interested. I understand there is a group in the Stayton area who meet, but I have never been to the group. My roots are actually Linn County, but I have been working on the cemeteries in East Linn County since 1985. This year I have been doing more to get the information online. By the way, if you see any "typos" or information in the Gates cemetery information, I would certainly appreciate corrections or additions. It is so easy to make errors, and my goal is to have it correct. As far as a gen. group for the Santiam Canyon, I haven't heard of one, yet. Cathy
