Several years ago, I learned admission and discharge information of 2 of my ancestors who had been in-patients at Oregon State Mental Hospital. That institution was at that time known as the Oregon Insane Asylum. These records were from about 1920--1925, am not sure right now. This information was available at the Oregon State Archives--address given below: Secretary Of State Archives Division 800 Summer St., NE Salem OR 97310 Phone: (503) 373-0701 Whether that office has volunteers to do look-ups I do not know. They do have a list of local people who are available to do genealogy research, however. The Oregon Death Index is also available at the Archives agency. I don't know if the old records from the Oregon Fairview Home (retarded and developmentally disabled) might also be available at the Archives. I would also like to know if any of this information is available via internet (as Linda Swanson has asked). Marilynn O'Neall meoall@msn.com
Find the web site of Oregon State Archives at http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/ The various Oregon State Mental and disabled institutions do not have web sites. Your best bet is to search the archives. Good luck and happy hunting. -- La Velle NottNott@worldnet.att.net
Hi--I've noticed that this is such a positive, helpful list--I thought I'd try my luck with you! :) Here goes--My grandmother, Isa May Brown Landis, had a daughter by her first marriage to a Frank Bush, also of Oregon. My father remembers his half-sister --Gertrude Francilla (Francilia? sp?) Bush (may have gone by Landis)--being in an institution in or near Salem, Oregon. She had a "withered" arm and was apparently unable to care for herself. She was periodically allowed visits home but had to be carried (this is from a little boy's memories, as my father was born in 1915 and his mother died in the flu epidemic in 1919--and his father--George Edward Landis in 1924). Both deaths took place in the Salem area of Marion County. As Gertrude was born about 1901 or so (Isa May and George Landis were married in 1903) she would probably have been about 14 or 15 when my father was born--I was told that she survived until the early 1930's--So--where would I look for an institution catering to someone with her disabilities at that time?--This was an extremely poor family, if that would make a difference as to where she may have been placed. It could not have been too far from Salem as this family's transportation was limited. I briefly looked at the Marion Co. census-- which actually included institutions--but had the wrong year as I had been told that she also died in 1919 (It's still possible, I guess--but I'd bet on the 30's). Can someone help me with this? I live in Moscow, Idaho and do get to Portland and Woodburn to visit family, but not often. So--is there a way for me to access this information via the internet? Or would I need to check Oregon State Vital Statistics? There is a soundex for Oregon County Deaths, isn't there? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I really am not sure of my direction (could you tell?) :) Anyway--thanks for whatever anyone can tell me. Linda Swanson :)
Depending on your relative's condition, she could also have been at the Fairview Training Center, a facility for the developmentally disabled. The following extract of an Oregon Legislative Fiscal Office budget brief describes it: "Fairview Training Center was founded in 1908 with 39 residents to provide residential care, treatment, and training for individuals with developmental disabilities. The Center reached a peak population of over 3,000 in the early 1960's. With the gradual move to community-based programs, the population had dropped to approximately 1,300 by 1981, when legislation was passed directing the Department of Human Resources (DHR) to move toward a predominately community-based system of treatment. The system was to include residential facilities, day programs, home care, and other services designed to allow maximum independence for developmentally disabled persons in the proximity of family, friends, and home communities. Since that time, the population of Fairview has been systematically reduced. By July 1997, there were approximately 300 residents at the facility." Fairview will be completely closed by this time next year.
If she was in Salem it could have been the Insane Asylum. It is now the State of Oregon Mental Hospital. It is located on Center St. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Blkshrit@aol.com> To: <ORMARION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 16, 1999 7:39 AM Subject: [ORMARION-L] Name of Institution > Looking for the name and address of the institution in which Dora FOLLRICH > resided at the time of her death abt 1943. There is also the Oregon State Hospital on Center Street in Salem. Go to Oregon On-line and click on the Government button. Then on the link for state agencies. They may have a web site, that would have people to contact. -- La Velle NottNott@worldnet.att.net > Possibly Damish Mental Hospital. Congratulations Dan on starting a Historical Society in the Stayton area. You mentioned you have some books of the area. My interest actually is in the Jefferson area and wondered if you - or anyone else here, for that matter - might have access to the City of Jefferson records for City officials. My grandfather, Ananias (Andy) Wilson served as an official in Jefferson for a while, I am not positive, but think he was a police or similar. I would guess this was in the time frame of 1930 - 1960. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific than that. Would anyone be able to find this info??? He lived in Marion for a number of years before moving to Jefferson. He and my grandmother, Edith Wilson, are both buried in the Friends Cemetery at Marion. My father thinks there probably are still people in Jefferson that would remember Ananias Wilson (he died in 1963). I met with some people in Stayton as well as the Historical Society its all a go I am going to head up a genealogy Society here local, there is nothing much at the library in Stayton and its not too receptive to having any thing extra stuff there, so we will house it at the Museum, of which I am a member - we have a lot of stuff there already to look through. My relations are passing flyers out in a variety of areas ; I will know soon who all is out there - what I would like to know is if there is any people of this area in the Salem group who would like to help get the local one going ? I also have a small amout of Marion Co books ; I have the fairview cemetery book here now 1883-1983 - and a book on DLC and some bio's about 1878 . _*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Dan Matney Genealogy Community Support Site http://www.angelfire.com/or/matney -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- ---------- > From: Linda L. I,ve been going thru deeds recorded in Marion Co. during 1850-1860. Located several that had surname that I am researching, "Grier". Weird though that first name "Jerome B." was listed as grantee. If he is the Jerome B. that I have in my line then he would be only 5 yrs. old at the time. My question is, Would there be some advantage for an adult to list his son as the buyer of property? Is this something that was done back then for some reason unknown to me? Would it have been possible for this to happen? I guess that's several questions. Anyone got any ideas? Of course I am considering that this Jerome was an adult and isn't in my line, but I thought I'd throw this out anyway and see what I heard. Thanks Brian
