    3. Hi...I too would like to add my family and query's to the surname list AUSTIN & BEACH My great-grandparents, John Beach & Martha Lasira (Noble) Beach, along with their daughter Jessie May Beach, moved to Woodburn about the turn of the century, from Thornapple Michigan. They were members of the Woodburn Methodist church. (I have an old photo of the church as well as Sunday school lessons and numerous postcards received by my grandmother from Silverton and various areas). John was a U.S. Marshall, have a photo with his badge on, in either Woodburn or Salem. John's brother, Amos Beach, also moved here from Thornapple, and had at least a son George, and a daughter, with him. I haven't found her name or Amos's wife's name yet. Both John and Amos were Union Cavalry veterans, Mich 6th Cavalry Co. K, John was wounded and Amos taken prisoner. Both attended the reunion of men who fought at Gettysburg. I have photo's and news clippings, and momentos of the Gettysburg reunion train. The Beach's are all buried at Belle Passi Cemetery in Woodburn, along with Jessie's first child, Frank Austin. Jessie married Frank Edward Austin (aka Edward R.) abt. 1910 in Salem. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Austin. Mary and children came to Oregon from Iowa just after 1870. More later. 3. I would like to add the surnames Moffitt and Watt to the Marion CO surname list. My grandfather and grandmother were William Christopher and Fannie Watt and they lived in Hubbard as did my mother Lillie Watt. After Lillie married my father, Melvill Moffitt they also lived in the Hubbard area and later in Scotts Mills. Lillie taught school in such locations as Whiskey Hill, Monitor and Scotts Mills. Some of her siblings lived in Hubbard. There are 3 Watts, one Abner Bowman Lilley and my mother and father (Moffitt) buried in the Belle Passi Cemetery in Woodburn. My uncle Roy Moffitt and wife Veda lived in Mt. Angel for some time. I believe that is also in Marion CO. Thank you. Verdena Veelle -----Original Message----- From: Linda L. 1. [ORMARION-L] Re: [ORCLACKA] Copyright
    2. I got on the internet, and here is what it says about copyright's Statutory right of the creator to exclusive control of an original literary or artistic production. The copyright holder may reproduce the work or license others to do so, and receives payments (royalties) for each performance or copy. The U.S. law (rewritten in 1978) extends protection for the creator's life plus 50 years. Books, plays, musical compositions, sound recordings, photographs, works of art, and other original creations may be copyrighted. Copyright laws first appeared in the 15th cent., when PRINTING began in Europe. The earliest American statute was passed in 1790. The U.S., with most other nations, subscribes to the 1952 Universal Copyright Convention. 3. In a message dated 1/5/00 11:14:32 AM Eastern Standard Time, ORCLACKA-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > Does anyone know the reason for the multitude of Germans that came to the > US in the late 1800's? Almost all of our German families came over during > that time and did not stay on the East Coast. My grandparents (maternal) were both from Schlesvig-Holstein which is in northern Germany. My grandfather came in 1886, my grandmother came in 1887. They knew each other b/4 they left Germany, and planned to marry when they both arrived here (which they did). The reason that was given for their coming here was for my grandfather to avoid the German draft, and to prevent future generations from having to serve. Since I have been studying my family history, I have learned that my grandfather's brothers and sister also arrived within that same time period. And, they re-grouped at Cass County, Nebraska. From there, three brothers went to Iowa, another brother went to Minnesota, and two siblings (my grandfather and his sister), stayed in Cass County. However, because my grandmother and her sister-in-law did not care for each other, my grandfather moved to Oklahoma. But, because he did not like the extreme weather conditions which he found in OK, in 1910, they moved to Marion County, Oregon where they were able to buy their first home. This was a well-planned departure from Germany by all of the six siblings. They were also quite planful as to where they would meet once they got here. They left another brother (their oldest brother) in Germany, and never saw him again. The rumor in my family is that my grandfather never had any further connection with, or letters from anybody left in the old country. A story in my family is that my grandfather tried to vote before he was a citizen. I think that he felt great joy in having come to this country. Marilynn O'Neall meoall@msn.com
