Oct 21 1943 issue Scio Tribune Scio Couple Celebrated Golden Wedding Anniversary The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J.N.(Norman) Long, dating from October 15 1893, was celebrated at the family home at Scio on Sunday, October 17th with all of the eight children being present, and many other relatives totaling at the dinner hour 60 persons. Many other friends and neighbors called at the home during the day and evening making a most enjoyable occasion for all. The eight children, four sons and four daughters, in the order of their respective ages, are: Mrs. Vista (Will) Sims, of Scio, Archie Long of Eugene, Delbert Long of Salem, Mrs. Grace (Harold) Thurston of Newport, Willard Long of Astoria, Mrs. Maysell Stoller, Route 2 Albany; Mrs. Gloria (Glen) Thurston, Scio and Max Long of Eugene. Mr. Long came here with his parents from Bates County, Missouri when he was only 10 years of age. He is now 72 and states that he has never been out of the State of Oregon since first coming into the state. Mrs. Long was born and raised here, and has never been out of the state. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex McDonald. The wedding of herself and Mr. Long took place at her parents farm, 2 1/2 miles east of Scio during the afternoon on their date of wedding and was on the same day immediately following that of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Synder, now in Alaska, the first wedding of that day being at Mrs. Snyder's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Montgomery's place farther southeast from town. Rev. C.C. Sperry, then pastor of Providence Baptist Church nine miles southeast of town, and who then resided in Brownsville, officiated at both weddings. Mr. Long was always engaged in farm work and for many years hauled milk to the condensery which was located at his place. He and his wife have resided at their present home location at the northwest edge of town for 27 years. Among the many congratulatory messages received on their Golden wedding anniversary by Mr. and Mrs. Long was a hand scribed greeting from Governor Earl Snell. Many lovely gifts were also received including flowers from Judge and Mrs. E. G. Arnold and his mother, now of Albany but formerly of this community.
