Brownsville Times Nov 21, 1913 Luther White, who died at his home in Brownsville, November 13, 1913, at the age of 98 years, was born in Ohio, near Lake Erie, January 20, 1815. He was the oldest man in Linn county, and had he lived until January 20, next, would have been 99 years of age. Shortly after his birth his parents moved to Illinois, later to Missouri, from which state he crossed the plains to Oregon in 1847, accompanied by his wife, who died in Brownsville, January 4, 1894. The journey to Oregon occupied six months, during which they suffered many hardships. They located on a donation land claim consisting of 640 acres eight miles south of Brownsville. The family resided there until 1872 when they moved to Brownsville. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. White, only two of whom survive their father, Rosie B. White of Brownsville of Brownsville, and Robert White, who resides on the old homestead. Mr. White was elected to the territorial legislature in 1852 and served with honor. His father, John White, took an active part in the Revolutionary War. During his early manhood he entered the ministry, but in 1843 resumed farming operations. He had served the city of Brownsville as recorder and a director and school clerk. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, well known throughtout the state, and leaves many friends to mourn his death. ***Note*** 1860 & 1880 Linn Co census names Luther's wife was Martha A., other children besides Rosie and Robert, were Margaret, John, Eliza, and Silas.
