Brownsville Times Aug 30, 1912 DEATH CAUSES ODD MIXUP Oregon Insane Asylum officials Have Remarkable Mistaken Identity Case A remarkable case of mistaken identity, peculiar in many was, brought to light in Brownsville Saturday when a dispatch was received form Salem by Undertaker Whealdon saying that the body being prepared in Salem for shipment to this city for burial was not that of Mrs. Margaret E. Findley, but was the remains of Mrs. Martha Findley. who had died at the asylum. Mrs. Martha Findley died and the asylum authorities, believing her to be Mrs. Margaret E. Findley, notified her daughters, Mrs. Etta Sims and Mrs. Culley, who reside in Portland. Mrs. Sims notified her uncle, R.R. Templeton of this city by telegram that his sister was dead and that body would be brought to Brownsville for burial in the family plot in the McHargue cemetery. Mrs. Sims came direct to this city and assisted in making all arrangements for the funeral when the notification came that Mrs. Margaret Findley was not dead. In the meantime Mrs. Culley went to Salem where she discovered the mistake that had been made by the asylum officials. A dispatch from Salem states that the asylum authorities immediately took over all the expense incurred by the relatives of Mrs. Margaret Findley, but are puzzled as to the relatives of the dead woman and efforts are being made to locate them. Both of the Mrs. Findleys were committed to the asylum form Multnomah county and the striking similarity of names resulted in the strange mistake.
