He was born July 5, 1927 in Flaxville, Mont., to Montana homesteaders Bernice and Marvin Sorte, the eldest of four boys. He spent most of his childhood in Scobey, Mont. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was trained as a radio operator. After the war, he used the GI Bill to enroll in Montana State University, where he met Mary Jean Rucker from Plentywood. Mary Jean and Curtis were married on Dec. 26, 1949. They moved to Eugene where he enrolled at the University of Oregon in pre-dental studies; he graduated in 1952 and was accepted in the school of dentistry at the University of Minnesota. In 1956, he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. His first dental practice was in Echo, Minn. He purchased a practice in Albany in 1958, and moved the family west. He was an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and particularly liked working with the Timber Carnival. He stayed well informed on current events, read a number of papers each day, and often submitted ideas to local officials. He gave several talks around the region and campaigned successfully for the addition of fluoride to the local water supplies so all children could benefit from it. He and members of the Ocean Shores Conservation Coalition were successful in securing the preservation of the wetlands in Newport located south of the Yaquina Bay Bridge adjacent to South Beach State Park. Friends and family remember he always treated people "without regard to their financial circumstances, beliefs or station in life; and believed that every person, at least deep down inside, knew what was right." He loved his dog, "Cookie." He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Jerry. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean; children Bruce Sorte of Corvallis, Sue Cordle of Philomath, Jim Sorte of Issaquah, Wash., and Julie Swanson, Tina Sorte and Curt Sorte, all of Albany; a brother, Don of Great Falls, Mont.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A family service was held. The family suggests memorial contributions to Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, SafeHaven Humane Society, or Downtown Carnegie Library fund in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington, Albany, Ore. 97321 (www.fisherfuneralhome.com).
