Albany Demarcate Herald Jan 1981 (forgot to write down the day) Charles Smith Services for Charles W. "Sarge" Smith, 78, Quarry Road, will be at 2 pm. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home. The Rev. Alfred D. Enns will oficiate and burial will follow at Willamette Memorial Park. Smith died Wednesday at the Veterans' Hospital in Portland. Memorials may be made to the Oregon Heart Association. Smith was born April 5, 1905, at Little Rock, Ark. He spent his youth in Memphis, TN. before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served for eight years. Following his discharge Smith lived in Chicago, ILL. and worked at Century of Progress World Fair. He also operated a small print shop until 1941 and rejoined the U.S. Army in 1942. Part of his enlistment was spent at Camp Adair. He was discharged in 1945. He worked at Simpson Plywood for 1951 until retirement in 1967. During retirement he had operated a small home nursery part-time. He married Norma Buchanan on Oct. 31, 1948 at Albany. She survives. Other survivors include one son Michael C., Albany. One brother died earlier.
