Albany Democrat Sept 17, 1897 AN OLD PIONEER DEAD Dr. Asa Peterson, died at his home in Lebanon at 1:30 o'clock a.m., yesterday after short illness from a paralytic stroke. he was aged 75 years. Dr. Peterson was born in West Virginia in 1822, and in 1845 with his family, crossed the plains. Dr. Peterson took up a claim at the foot of Knox's Butte, in 1846, but soon abandoned and took up one at the foot of Peterson's Butte, which claim he held until a few years ago, Peterson Butte taking its name from him. In 1872, he moved from his farm into Lebanon. He was the father of five children, three of whom survive him. Dr. Peterson was probably the oldest pioneer in the country
